Kfadfi allbfory In September 1943 we entered the first grade taught by Miss Eltzabeth Wolf Out of that group there are only seven of us who are still together At that trme we were too full of wonder about our new life to think of graduatton or of the world which we would be en tering eleven years from then Some of us were very shy while others were bold We soon found that it didn t pay to be extreme either way and Miss Wolf helped us frnd a happy medium The next year we were rn the care of Miss Mary Sue Edmondson By then we were old hands at thrs Job of going to school and did we think those little first graders were sillyl Dons Bowles and Eugene Hall enrolled in our class thrs year Miss Gladys Dulaney was our third grade teacher and we were very wxlling to follow her instnrctrons and work to the best of our abil rty Edna Marshall was welcomed to our class Then came the fourth grade and with tt new subjects History was one of them but we drdn t realize that rt was only the beginning of our struggle with rt We loved Mrs Ellen Bradley and worked hard for her ln the spring we were very exerted about bemg in the Operetta lt was not only fun giving it but all those practices kept us out of class Maybe that s where we learned to love gettrng out of classesl Mrs Ruby Willrams had to work hard with us in the fifth grade because we were gettrng mrschrevous and seemed to know less school work every day That year we danced around the May Pole rn the May Day exercises We welcomed Jackie Hayes and Jackre Vaughan to our class ln the sixth grade Mrs Russell Ewing was our teacher We were sorry when she left and though we ltked Miss Joyce Toothman o our second semester teacher xt took us a while to become adrusted J D Carneal Joined us thts year Then we became the most important students rn grade school seventh graders In filling this position we also had much more work to do as Mrs Thelma Dunham prepared us for high school We learned English grammar which even now we have never forgotten and began developing our leadershrp abrlrty through being effrctent class officers Thts was a wonderful year with our trip to Washmgton our tour of Richmond and the Operetta Many of us could play football baseball and softball so well that we saw no reason why we would n t make the first teams upon entering high school We welcomed Eugene Hall back to our class when he returned from livtng rn Wash mgton state When we came to school in the fall of 1950 each of us possessed a thrill of excitement Now we were in high school We loved havurg Mr Clarence Mayor as our homeroom teacher and he gave us a wonderful start in high school We soon became accustomed to changing classes and passing all the older students in the hall We mrssed that feeltng of being respected which we had in the seventh grade and couldn t rmagine ever becoming Seniors and leading all the student actrvities We hked having many teachers I sometimes wonder if Mrs Elrzabeth Eubank Mr Carlyle Williams Mr Clarence Major and Mr Wrlltam Manson could have lrked havrng us though Some uf us made our start rn becoming athletes in thts our Freshman year and almost all of us began dating We welcomed Shirley Bosher our long lost class mate back and were also glad to have Pat Detwrler Jom our class Then we were Sophomores and were beginning to know our way around tn hrgh school Mr Wrlliams bravely faced all our norse rn and dissected cats under the supetvisron of Mr Blau Apperson We became acquarnted with Miss Janrce Wrllrams our Englxsh teacher during tnts year too Members of our class were pleased when their previous work brought rewards by being invited to Join the Beta Club Virgima Wicker Joined us from John Marshall High School For the first nme two of our girls were in the May Court Our Junlor year was the second best in our school lrfe Wrth Miss Willrams as our homeroom teacher we planned parttes that were so much fun especially those Joint ones wrth the Semors Stnce the majority of our class was girls we had few athletes but some of the girls loved to cheer for the football players American literature and Amerrcan history really famrliarrzed us wrth our country Being Juniors we enloyed that long awaited event the Junior Semor Prom It was wonderful dancing to Stardust and seerng the blue and srl ver decorations on which we had worked so hard Members of the class partrctpated rn the May Day as usual Suddenly we realized that we were Seniors We shook our heads agarn and tried to thrnk clearly Semors we had waited so long to get here Eugene Hall returned to us agarn this time from Buckingham He Just couldn t stay away from us long ln tlus manner we began our last year at Battlefield Park a year that has ended far too soon for many of us The school was crowded so we had classes almost everywhere for a few weeks Bur we didn t mind because we felt as if we practrcally owned the place by then All of our boys have been athletes thxs past year and most of the girls have too Everyone has had a part in school lrfe No we have not been drgnrfred Seniors but we have been happy busy ones Presenting Taming the Brat our Senior Play was so much fun Mrs Eubank our Sen ror homeroom teacher and Mrs Dunham made such good directors too lt has been wonderful to have Mrss Marian Breeden work wtth us on the annual and the school paper The boys lrked havrng Mr Gilbert Pxercy Mr Benme Elmore and Mr Tommy Grrzzard as thetr agriculture teachers throughout hrgh school The Jtmror Senior Prom with its Valentme theme will be remembered as a high lrght of our Semor year and the May Day with the queen from our class will be too Thinking back over the past eleven years l don t thrnk we wtll rnrss the highlights as much as the day to day actrvrtres of school Yes graduatron is a sad occasron but rsn t it wonderful to have had such a happy past as our foundation for our future lives? For the Class of 54 I wish to express our deepest appreciation to our teachers and to our prmcrpal Mr B V Aylor for makrng our school life so worthwhile and we hope that rn the future we will make fnends as true as these Let us never forget our class motto Find a way or make one and may we always strive to hve by rt Judy Alexander Class Hxstorian ' .
