The back of his golden neck is covered with a down of saffron. Purple shines upon his throat. Rays of gold and fire shoot from his wings, impatient to be seen. His tail is colored with the purest gold. These rich colors emerge from a background of radiant iris, shading into each other with a magic that enchants the eye. His eye has the brilliance of the clearest diamond. His colors can only be compared to the lustre oj precious stones blended by the skill of an artist. A double crest decorates the head of this graceful bird. The crest covers his brain, seat of his intelligence, workshop of his meditations, and container of his knowledge. From his early Greek beginning until well into modern times the fabulous phoenix has found its place in the life of man and in the school of John S. Battle. The phoenix can be found on the state seals of Hawaii in 1952, and Virginia in 1877. The city of Phoenix, Arizona was named after this proud bird. And at John Battle the yearbook bears the name of the phoenix. The Battle phoenix feeds on the students' emotions. It lives on the agonies of failure, the tears of defeat, the joys of victory, and the sounds of laughter. The phoenix can never die as long as one student can give the emotions on which it lives. And so he is named the Eternal Bird. Hence, the name of this yearbook is the Phoenix. The pages that follow contain a glimpse of a year that has passed and will never be lived again. Thereby, the Phoenix, like its mythical namesake, is eternal for these same pages have captured in pictures and words the year of 1975. 'Dedication “There should be more teachers like Mrs. Crabtree! By this statement students mean that Mrs. Crabtree gets the job done ; that she is kind and unassuming; that she is energetic and efficient; that she is friendly and fair- minded; that she speaks quietly but with confidence; that her eyes betray a quick and ready wit; that her smile and enthusiasm are contagious; that she likes young people and thoroughly enjoys teaching. Students are not alone in recognizing Mrs. Crabtree's merits. Everyone who knows her is impressed with her talents, the scope of her in¬ terests, and her zest for living. Through the years Lou Crabtree has taught hundreds of John S. Battle students who remember fondly the hours they spent in her drama, English, and social studies classes. Her drama students, in particular, have much to be proud of. Under her direction several classes won state and local One-Act Play awards, and all of her drama students can boast that their teacher attended the American Aca¬ demy of Dramatic Arts in New York and appeared on the Broadway stage! Mrs. Crabtree's literary efforts have also been recognized. She won the Creative Writing Contest of the Virginia Highlands Festival in 1972, and the festival Poetry Contest in 1973. In 1974 she won first place in the Virginia poetry contest. Throughout the years she has had several articles and stories published in literary magazines. Mrs. Crabtree attended Washington County schools and graduated CUM LAUDE from Radford College. During her 36 years as a teacher in the Washinton County school system, she has also attended classes at King College, Emory and Henry College, the University of Virginia, and the College of William and Mary. To express their conviction that John S. Battle students are belter and wiser for having known this fine lady, the yearbook staff proudly dedicates the 1975 PHOENIX to Mrs. Lou Crabtree. 6 Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself to others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exerci se caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially; do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be a peace with God, whatever you concieve Him to be, and whatever you labors and aspirations , in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. 1927 by Max Ehrntann AH rights reserved Copyright renewed 1954 by Bertha K. Putting on a fine show against the Gate City Blue Devils, the JV Trojans marched to a smashing victory of 55-12. They also had victories over Patrick Henry and Holston. The JV games with Virginia High and Tennessee High were cancelled, as the JV players were needed on the Var¬ sity squad. The team increased its daily workouts to 7-10 miles a day, most of them over the rough terrain of neigh¬ boring Waldo Miles Park. Victories over Virginia High, Abingdon, Patrick Henry, Gate City, and Alleghany County highlighted the year. In addition, the thinclads captured the Washington County championship. The team was led by returning lettermen Jimmy Smith, Kenny Robinson, and Mike Grobb, with Glen Long, Jayde Fleenor, and Terry Wingate consistently finishing at the top. Wayne Leonard, Phil Parris, Robert Miller and Lafawn Frohling added team depth so essential for a good cross-country program. JSB closed out its season with a solid performance at the District Meet, Oct. 26. Experience and skill brought Coach Wysor's team through a difficult but rewarding season. The Trojans proved to be strong ball defenders on the court against many of their opponents. They baffled the other teams with their quickness, skill, and desire to win. Important victories were gained over Virginia High, Abingdon, Holst on, Patrick Henry, Marion and Richlands. Although we owe our fine season to the team effort, we would like to recognize Ronnie Mullins and Steve Hurley for their superb scoring efforts. Faltering only slightly from illness, our basketball team did much to brighten the Trojan shield of pride. Next year we cannot help but feel the' impact of losing our fine seniors. Running by Holston, the JV squad scored 68 points to a mere 38 by Holston. In a very close game with Grundy, Battle came out on top by a basket, 55-53. The 880 relay team also went to regionals with runners Terri Pullins, Joan Davidson, Susan Brotheck Jean Osborne. Battle Varsity and Junior Varsity Cheerlead¬ ing Squads, sponsored by Miss Edmundson and Mrs. Meade, began their “season” with determination to provide their school and teams with outstanding cheerleaders. Following fund raising projects and practices, both squads attended the National Cheerleading Clinic at Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia. After a week of sore muscles, arguments, hurt feelings, tears, frustrations, and laughter . . . combined with sheer hard work, each squad was awarded a trophy for being the Most Outstanding Varsity Squad and Jun¬ ior Varsity groups. During that week, each squad was also awarded blue and red ribbo ns for their cheer competitions. Also, Kim Kennedy was recognized as being one of the five most outstanding cheerleaders. After returning home, the girls began preparing for an exciting football season. Vigorous sign-making and fund-raising projects were undertaken and proved successful. The girls are proud of their school, their Trojan Team and their squads. This year, the Art Club has taken a front row seat in the school’s affairs. The members, taking interest in club activities, have participated more than ever before. Occasional field trips to local museums and exhibits strenghten their knowledge and appreciation of art. All members of the club must be taking, or have taken, an art class at the high school level. The Art Club has a bake sale for every major holi¬ day. Every Christmas, the members sell their own hand-made items at the annual Craft Sale. In the spring, the club sponsors the Mary Lula Tedder Art Trophy Competition Exhibit, suppling the ribbons and trophy from the club funds. Art Club members have a good time — and learn a lot! During 1974-1975, Lynn Neeves served as the historian for the Symwasco Federation. Future Homemakers of America is an orga¬ nization of boys and girls studying homemaking in high schools of the United States. It provides opportunities for students to have additional experiences in planning and carrying out activities related to homemaking. Our over-all goal is ... to help individuals improve personal, family, and community living now and in the future. Our over-all objective is .. . to participate actively in pro¬ jects for family, community living and world improve¬ ment. Sponsors for our chapter are Miss Janette Martin, Mrs. Grace Cassell, and Miss Ruth McNeil. Some of Battle’s FHA highlights for this year included a recycling drive and decorating in the YMCA Parade of Christmas Trees. Motto — “ Toward New Horizons”. Flower — red rose. Careful planning and hours of hard work go into the preparation of lunches for over 1000 students. Cooking meals involves rattling a lot of pans, as the cafeteria ladies can prove. The five full time ladies, pictured above, are aided by the following part-time employ¬ ees: Birdie Barker, Lois Edwards, Ruth Latham, Joyce Fleenor, and Peggy Lous. Without custodians we would find our school cluttered by paper and garbage. We don't see those who maintain our school. We express our appreciation and thanks to Dan Mays, Homer Mays, Randall lance, Charles Carroll, and Hazel Reed. A special thank- you to Darrell Childress who worked many long hours at John Battle. 128 Randall Vance Senior Superlatives Best Dressed: Lee Ann H unsucker and Mike Noonkester. The Senior class sponsored many of the activities this past year like the Sadie Hawkins Dance, Greaser Dance, and Talent Show. We were sponsored by Mrs. Joan Dingus. Many things happened to each member of the Senior class since first being called seniors until graduation. College day influenced many seniors on what college to go to, while others planned to enter the business world. As the year came to an end we realized what it really meant to be a senior. We realized how hard it was going to be to part from the school that we thought was so terrible. We've got spirit, we’re pure heaven; we’ re the class of 17. Being a sophomore has not exactly been pure hea¬ ven. but it sure beats the lowly ranks of the fresh¬ men. We found our lives being shaped for the world out¬ side in 1977. As the 1974-75 school year closes, we realize that 1977 holds a great future for us. Finding our classes has been an adventure. Meeting all of our teachers and then wondering if we will ever be able to remember their names. After getting lost in the halls and having to ask an upper classman the way, we still had to suffer the embarrassment of walking into class late. But do not distress yourself with imaginnings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. ” Every Annual staff wants “their” Annual to be special, and every editor wants his staff to be special. The reason is simple; it takes a special staff to produce a special annual. This year’s staff had the diligence, patience, enthusiasm, and just plain guts that make a staff special. They were willing to give more than they thought they had. It reminds me of the phrase, if you’ve got it — give it. The 1975 PHOENIX staff gave it and my “Thank You can only scratch the surface of my appreciation. A sincere “Thank You ” also goes to the following: Mrs. Sandra Kemmish, our sponsor who helped us through all the rough spots. Mr. Jack Cross, our American Yearbook representative; Freddie Garrett, for his beautiful artwork; The Bristol Herald Courier, for our sports pictures; Classic Studio, for their time and effort in making every picture just what we wanted; And last but not least, I would like to thank each one of you for buying a 1975 PHOENIX. This book contains sad times, happy times, times to remember, and times we would like to forget. But each time was a part of 1975, and 1975 is a part of us.
