Gotham TABLE OF CONTENTS STUDENT LIFE. 5 HIGHLIGHTS.16 SPORTS.. . 36 ORGANIZATIONS.76 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY.118 STUDENTS.130 ADVERTISEMENTS.208 2 3 Dedication Penny Vermillion Bruce exemplifies the better aspects of personality and purpose associated with excellence in teaching. Each day she enhances the lives of her students. She is friendly, concerned, and understanding. She makes her students feel important because they know she believes in them. She brings enthusiasm to the class¬ room and a genuine interest in inspiring students to do their best. From 1970 to 1973 Mrs. Bruce served as sponsor of the yearbook and was much admired for her leadership and courage. Not many teachers would have put up with the struggle of selling ads, the tension of meeting dead¬ lines, the frustration of financial uncertainty, the hours of extra time and worry, and all the other aggravations that are part of publishing a yearbook. It takes a rare type of person to do this without sacrificing the primary responsibilities of teaching and the constant concern for each student’s progress. Mrs. Bruce is such a person. It is with gratitude, appreciation, and considerable pride that we dedicate the 1974 Phoenix to Penny Vermillion Bruce. 4 5 6 Get the most from each hour, each day, and each year of your life. 7 Be yourself but be your best self 8 9 Don’t be afraid to be happy. 10 11 Disregard what the world owes you, concentrate on what you owe the world. 12 13 Now you can look forward with confidence, and back without regrets. 14 H I G H L I G H T S PROM 1973 The Junior-Senior Prom was held April 7, 1973, at the V.F.W. The Volleyball Team was lead by Lisa Benfield, Captain, and Karen Balthis, Co-captain. Practice began at 7:00 a.m. for the eight girls who were interested enough to play, but due to the energy crisis the schedule was curtailed. On three occasions against Holston, Abingdon, and Patrick Henry high schools, Battle placed last. Battle continued its winless record by placing fourth once more in the County Tournament. Hopefully more girls will be interested in trying out next year, and the team’s record will improve. The National Honor Society endeavors to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to develop character, and to promote leadership within the students of John S. Battle. The main project each year is the awarding of a two hundred dollar scholarship to an out¬ standing National Honor Society senior. This year the National Honor Society sold cartoon characters to raise money for a special school project. Bulletin boards are put up to honor new members of the National Honor Society and the honor roll students, as well as a special bulletin board depicting some facet of school spirit. Welcoming new National Honor Society members is done at a special induction ceremony with a reception to honor the new members and their parents afterwards. N.H.S. sold plaques as major fund raising project. 80 Drama The Drama Club of John S. Battle High School was organized in September of 1973, under the sponsorship of Mr. Bill Phelps. The purpose of this organization is to develop the full potential of its members as individuals and as artists and to promote an appreciation of and an interest in theatre in the school and the community. The club’s major activity was the presentation of a full season of theatrical offerings to the student body and the public. This offering consisted of a three-act melodrama, a reader’s theatre production, a night of one-acts, and a music comedy. These productions provided club members with experience in the total theatre process: acting, design, rehearsal, production, stagecrafts, and play attendance. An award-winning one-act play was presented by the Drama Club at the Southwest District One-Act Play Festival, which was held at Virginia Intermont College. Throughout the year club members enjoyed attending community theatre, visiting the drama departments of several local colleges, and participating in drama workshops. Membership in the Drama Club during the 1973-1974 school year proved to be a reward¬ ing and interesting experience. Drama members display interest in club meeting. The Speakers Bureau is an organization of young men who participate in school and community events where their talent for speaking can be expressed. Many activities highlight the year for the Bureau; these include parti¬ cipating in the V.F.W. Contest, the Optimist Club con¬ test, and speaking before several area civic clubs. The Speakers Bureau is sponsored by Mr. Jack Garland. 82 Debate Society The Debate Society ha s as its chief aim the fur¬ thering of the skills of reasoning, research, and ex¬ temporaneous speaking. It builds the speaker’s confidence in his capabilities in public speaking and his questioning of mankind’s ideas and ac¬ complishments. The Debate Team, sponsored by T. R. Stokes, participated in area debates with surrounding high schools and in the Regional Debate Tournament. The debate topic for the 1973-74 school year was: Resolved: That the Federal Government should guarantee a minimum annual income for each family unit. Advisor. 83 Phoenix Staff The 1973-74 Phoenix Staff was proud to have the largest staff ever working toward one goal, a great yearbook! Our new sponsors, Mrs. Pauline Gotham and Mrs. Janet Derting, and our new members learned the “ropes” with plenty of help from dedicated “veterans” who survived last year and came back for more. Ads! They have caused staff members to pull their hair and ordinarily calm sponsors to get frantic! Our beloved editor, Lola “Bunny” Davidson, gave us tips on selling ads, such as the importance of being “positive” in our approach. But how can a person be positive in his approach when he has been left waiting for thirty minutes only to be told, “We don’t want an ad this year. Come back next year.”? Yearbook publishing has its ups and downs like everything else. The main thing we had to learn was how to cope with the calm before the storm and the storm itself — three days before a deadline. We carried on old traditions like the Miss Phoenix contest and decorating for homecoming, but we started some new ones such as the “Sign-the-Annual” page in the back of the yearbook. Those few people on the staff who were late getting their assigned pages done suddenly wished they didn’t hold such important positions on the staff. “Where are those missing pages? You are responsbile!” Rhonda Stark, Club Editor; Becky Neese, Sports Editor; and Jennie Houser, Faculty Editor, had their problems keeping up with dozens of pictures. Ah, but how about the class editors who juggled over two hundred pictures each? We would have been in a mess without people like Carla Jessee, Eighth Grade Editor; Teresa A. Williams, Freshman Editor; Debbie Singleton, Sophomore Editor; and Bunny Davidson, Junior and Senior Editor. Varina Woodward took care of any ads we managed to drag in, and Janet Hensley coped with and finally conquered the Student Directory. Our typist was Brenda Sande- fur, our photographer was Bev Long and Pam Jessee, and our business manager was Karen Stine, Jennie Houser, our Assistant Editor, tried to learn everything about publishing an annual in the short time between deadlines and managed to get thoroughly confused in the process. Oh well, you can’t win them all. We can’t forget those staff members such as Becky Leonard, Theresa D. Williams, Cindy Gibbons, and Janet Otey who did more than their share of the work. All in all, this has been a year we couldn’t forget even if we wanted to! Members are: Doris Clendenen, Terri Colbert, Susi Counts, Donna Crabtree, Bunny Davidson, Bruce Denton, Craig Elsea, Carol Finley, Sherry Freeman, Freddie Garrett, Cindy Gibbons, Sharon Halstead, Janet Henslev. The Library Club is composed of students taking an interest in the library and the facilities the library has to offer. Many of the members volunteer to assist the librarians, Mrs. Elaine Duty and Mrs. Shelah Gregg, during their study periods. The girls are responsible for keeping books, cards, and magazines in order; the boys work in the audio-visual department helping teachers use the available equipment, Besides the usual duties of the members, the club held bake sales, provided Christmas gifts for two children at the orphanage, hosted the faculty tea in December, had a Christmas Party for the members, presented a film for the student body and planned a picnic for the spring. A major portion of the club funds are used to improve the library and make it a more pleasant place to work. The objectives of the club are to improve the school library and audio-visual service, to arouse further enthusiasm for books and reading, and to encourage interest in the library profession. Library Club member David Necessary (LEFT) shelves books while student Brenda Pruitt (RIGHT) enjoys the library’s facilities. 86 French Club French Club meetings hold attention of Matt Savinsky. The French Club wishes to serve both the school and its individual members to the best of its ability. In order to do this, we are planning to have guest speakers who are either natives of France or who have traveled or studied there recently. We hope to be able to have an assembly for the student body sometime this year. The French Club is financed by dues for club member¬ ship and by the proceeds from bake sales. We use the money to help a needy individual or family at Christmas and to help finance our annual picnic. We hope to make enough money to purchase something for the school. French Club Officers are: Mark Draper, President; Matt Savinsky, Vice-President; Varina Woodward, Secretary; Sharon Dupont, Historian; Debbie Keith, Chaplain; Karen Stine, Parliamentarian; Teresa Williams, Treasurer; Phil Yon, Sgt-at-Arms; Bruce Denton, Reporter; Mrs. Ptess, Sponsor. The Pep Club, sponsored by Mrs. Merry Jennings, is open to all stu¬ dents who want to raise school spirit and to encourage enthusiasm for games and support for Battle’s ath¬ letes. The members demonstrated their loyalty and spirit by sitting together in a Pep Club section at home games, by painting posters for most home games, by present¬ ing skits at pep rallies, by selling spirit buttons, by contributing to athletic-related projects at Battle, and by taking a bus to an away football and an away basketball game. The FFA, one of the strongest and most active organizations at Battle, received recognition as one of the outstanding chapters in the country at the National Convention. Each year members participate in public speaking, parliamentary procedure, tractor driving and trouble shooting contests; members also are active in livestock, dairy, forestry, and horticulture judging contests. Several members exhibited livestock, dairy cattle, and crops at local and state fairs. This year Battle ' s FFA Chapter combined efforts with the chapters from the other Washington County Schools in building a picnic area and shelter at South Holston Lake. During National FFA Week the chapter served cherry pie and coffee to the faculty, presented an assembly prog-am for the school, and presented a radio program. Members also participated in a leadership conference, the State FFA Convention, forestry camp, FFA-FHA camp, and various other activities which include making a calendar and giving a poinsettia to the members of the faculty at Christmas. The year’s activities were highlighted by the annual Parent-Member Barbecue and Awards Program. Members with outstanding records and achievements in various fields were recognized. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Robert Stover Anderson Memorial Livestock Chain which consisted of giving a heifer to each of two worthy recipients. These chapter activities were financed through the selling of peanuts, picnic tables, calendar ads, and by cleaning the football stadium. Senior Officers As the Senior Class looks back, we see a busy year filled with many accomplishments. Some have said we were one of the best classes ever to pass through Battle High School, and we have worked to live up to everyone’s expectations. We received a plaque for the best decorations and most spirit during the Winter Sports Festival. Included in our projects were a candle sale, a license tag sale, and the Halloween Dance. Everyone looked forward to Greaser Day, the Greaser Dance, the Prom, and of course that sad, solemn finale, graduation. We have many memories to look back on, but more im¬ portant are our future dreams becoming reality. Before we leave, we wish to honor Mrs. Joan Dingus as the person who has had the greatest influence on us during our years at John S. Battle High School. Others who re¬ ceived a significant number of votes were Mrs. Lou Crab¬ tree, Miss Rhoda Craig, Mr. Jack Garland, Mrs. Pauline Gotham, Mr. Henry Green, Mr. James Loggans, Mrs. Marlene McCall, Mrs. Phyllis Minnick, Mrs. Nancy Parker, and Mr. Randall Vance. To all of these we express our sincere appreciation. We set our goals high and attained that height through the unified effort of the Class of ’75, under the capable guidance of Mr. Jack Gar¬ land. This year the magazine sales totaled over $5,000 and there were those who said it couldn’t be done. This is the record for John Battle on Junior maga¬ zine sales in the entire history of the school. Impossible? No, not at all. Class rings! Even the name makes it sound important. Just ask any Junior, class rings are the symbol of coming closer to our highest goal, graduation. No wonder we are proud. Ah, but the main event in a Junior’s life is the prom with all the fancy dresses and formal tuxes. For most of us it is our first prom and it means something very special to each individual. The theme carries the thought, “We may never pass this way again.” This year is over but not gone. It will be relived again and again in our mem¬ ories. Pictured (LEFT TO RIGHT): Marianne Lagerholm, Vice President; Jo Bently, Treasurer. SECOND ROW: Vera Jessee, Chaplain; Pam Mays, Historian. The Sophomore Class of 1973-74, sponsored by Mr. Bill Phelps, demonstrated active involvement in a wide variety of school activities. Those functions with major sophomore participation were athletic contests, forensic contests, dances, band and chorus concerts, pep rallies, plays, science fairs, assembly programs, and club field trips. With the desire to make the school year a great one for their school, the members of the Sophomore Class willingly contributed their abilities to both curricular and co-curricular activities. In the classroom sophomores expressed their interest in learning and their desire to improve. On the football field, golf course, basketball court, and track they exhibited their sportsmanship and their desire to excel. In the the Student Cooperative Association the sophomores demonstrated their cooperation and their initiative. However, the trait most possessed and exemplified by the members of the Sophomore Class in every aspect of school life was Trojan pride. 170 Sophomores Gordon Balthis Jay Barb Wayne Barger Gary Barker Alvin Barnette Debbie Barrett Jimmy Barrett Dennis Bays Peggy Adams Tom Adams Karen Addison Pat Adkins Tony Atkins Kathy Akers Teresa Anders Teresa Baker Kim Ball Tricia Ball Debbie Blaylock Patricia Booher Cathy Branham Chris Branson Lori Branson 171 Jeryl Bryant Bill Burkholder Brion Burress Sophomores Jessie Brewer Penny Brewer Susan Brotbeck Mike Brown “Learning can be fun!” Ralph Byington Debbie Cadle Billy Campbell Richard Canode Ted Carrier Debbie Carroll Teresa Carroll Jimmy Carter Anna Chorosevic 172 Sophomores Freda Clark Kenny Cox David Dameron Danny Deskins Eric Duff Carl Coalson Randy Cox Joan Davidson Teresa Dinkens Mickie Dunn Suzanne Cole Roger Crane Chuck Deering Kathy Dixon Sharon Dupont Gary Combs Sherri Cunningham Mark Denton Pat Dixon Steve Dutton Chuck Cox Perry Dalton Pat Denton Jeff Dowell Laurie Duty Keith Dye Mark Eades Gail Eades Neil Easterly Steve Estes 173 Sophomores Susan Faulkner Connie Faust Helen Felty Sue Fields Joel Fleenor Mike Grubb Janice Hall Sharon Halstead Patricia Hanson Larry Harless Mark Fleenor Sandy Fleenor Lisa Ford Lafawn Frohling Delmar Goodson Tony Grant David Griffin Mark Grizzle Laura Gage Debbie Gentry Karen Gollehon 174 Sophomores Rhonda Harley Donna Hause Veda Herndon Copey Hicks Rita Hicks Bobby Harmon Kathy Hawk Stanley Hillard Cheryl Holmes Jackie Horner Libby Harris David Hawthorne Chris Houser Monty Houser Allen Hughes Betty Hart Keith Hayden Cathy Hughes Ricky Hughes Ginger Hutton Vickie Hash Sue Hensley Mark Hyler Patty Ingle Ron Jaap 175 Sophomores Leisa James James Johnson Phil Johnson Ricky Jones Lisa Jordan Carolyn Keith Lewis Keller Jeannette Kennedy Steve Kestner Denise Kiser Jeff Kiser Kathy Kiser Terry Kitzmiller Randy Latham Michelle Lawson Allen Leonard Tommy Leonard Wayne Leonard Billy Lewis Bev Long Pam Lyons Cindy McCauley Truckin’ on down to the Greenhouse! 176 Sophomores Homeward bound! Where’s the lunchroom? Where is my class? Where’s anything? I think I’m lost! How will I ever manage six or seven teachers when I could hardly stand one at the elementary school? Will I ever be able to travel the miles from one class in the Mason building to another in the Main building in just five minutes? I hope the teachers aren’t as bad as they tell me. I’m scared! It sure feels different being an underclassmen, an eighth grade ‘baby’; only last year I was King of the elementary school, a seventh grader. No privileges now — just because I’m an eighth grader I can’t go to all the assemblies and I get blamed for all the running and paper wad throwing. Will I ever make it through this year?” These are the confused thoughts of an eighth grader, a new student at John S. Battle High School. However, these were only first impressions; the pre¬ freshmen class soon became an important part of the whole student body. They became adjusted to the many procedures of high school life and soon were actively participating in club activities, eighth grade sports, the S.C.A., the band, and the many academic programs at Battle.
