Dedication The person to whom the 1973 PHOENIX is dedicated was named Outstanding Young Educator of the Year in Washington County in 1972 by the Abingdon Jaycees. During the twelve years she has taught at John S. Battle High School, she has stressed the importance of independent thinking and excellence in performance on the part of the student. With her help and encouragement, students are inspired to participate in forensics and creative writing contests. One year her students entered the state creative writing contest in Charlottesville and made a “clean sweep” of first place, winning the top honor in poetry, short story, and essay categories. Another example of her consistent effectiveness as a teacher is how well prepared her students arc for college English. Nearly all of them find English less difficult than any other subject they take in college. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree at Stetson University and did graduate work at East Tennessee State University and the University of Virginia. While teaching at Battle she has been advisor to the S.C.A., a coach for forensics and debate, and a consultant for the state creative writing contest. She is presently advisor to the National Honor Society, does home bound teaching, and serves on the state evaluation committee. She is a leader of minds and a guide of the students, bringing new materials and methods of teach¬ ing to her classes, opening minds to new ideas and never losing sight of the purpose of English. Because of her loyalty and unceasing efforts, the PHOENIX staff proudly dedicates the 1973 PHOENIX to Miss Phyliss J. Ratliffe. 29
