Battle High School. He is not as dependent on the administration and faculty as we are on him. The student is not an interruption in our daily routine — he is the purpose of it. The student comes to the public school for our help and guidance. We are not doing him a favor when we serve him. He is a part of the educational process — the most important part. The student is not someone to argue or to match wits with. He is a person who brings us his wants. It’s our job assisting in filling those wants. The student is the life blood of this or any institution. He is the person who provides meaning for our efforts. Without him, we as teachers have no need for being here. We exist for the student. The student, therefore, deserves the most courteous and attentive treatment we can give him. 8 Perception of the Self “How little I have gained, How vast the unattained.” — Whittier “Genius is formed in quiet, Character in the stream of life.” — Goethe , -vV ' -r “Everything will come if a man will only wait” — Disraeli “I am a part of all that I have met.” — Tennyson 18 “Time is an infinite movement Perception of the Teacher He Is an Instructor Which Means He Stimulates the Capacities of the Individual.” 24 1972 Dedication This year the 1972 Phoenix is not merely a dedication to a highly esteemed faculty member. This year’s Phoenix shows the quality of his inspiration. While here at Battle, he has taught many students the funda¬ mentals of driver education, physical education and health. He has coached athletes in football, golf, and basketball. His education was completed at Tusculum College, where he majored in business administra¬ tion and minored in physical education. He received a Bachelor of Science degree before pursuing his teaching career. Throughout the year, he served as a fine example of leadership. Through his guidance, many young ath¬ letes found his knowledge unlacking and sportsmanship incomparable. Students appreciated his friend¬ ship and used his guidelines diligently. But, no students could appreciate him more than the Phoenix staff members themselves. For with his help, numerous tasks were accomplished that required a masculine touch for completion. With these accomplishments held high in students eyes, staff members proudly dedicate the ’72 Phoenix to a friend and respected instructor, Coach Howard C. Webb. Our lives are filled with conflicts Small crises haunt the mist of success ‘Success is simple — only know your defeats.’ People slide by, skidding on glazed faults which mirror life; The tumult we suffer must be endured; knowledge, the dimness of fog, shines never brightly, but is guided by divine inspiration. — Anonymous Washington County School Board Pictured (left to right): Mr. Henry S. The Varsity Cheerleaders attended cheerleading camp at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, Ten¬ nessee during the last week in July, and returned home with various awards. While competing with approx¬ imately two hundred squads, they won five blue ribbons for a superior performance, the spirit stick five days for the most enthusiasm exhibited, and the spark plug. Their success at cheerleading camp motivated the cheerleaders to become involved in various sports ac¬ tivities. Activities of the cheerleaders included sponsoring Spirit Week and presenting an award to the most spirited and enthusiastic club during the week of Homecoming. Also each week on the day of a ball- game, the cheerleaders did something special for each member of the team. They also planned each pep rally, and presented the spirit stick to the class who showed the most school spirit. The Varsity Cheerleaders of 1971-1972, sponsored by Mrs. Phil Robbins, had a very successful and mem¬ orable year! 74 ' rankie Copenhaver Debbie Collins Darlem Alternate “We’re Behind Ya Team, We’re Backing Ya Up” - ’ ' Til Pictured (left to right): Becky Moore, Debbie Hawkins, head cheerleader Carol Adkins, Debbie Gunning, and Kim Kennedy. This year the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders, sponsored by Mrs. Richard Hagy, attended Tennessee Tech University cheerleading camp for the second consecutive year. They came home bearing two red and two blue ribbons, a spirit stick, and sharing the precious spark plug with the Varsity cheerleaders. Throughout the year, they have cheered for J.V. football, J.V. basketball, and girls’ basketball. They have also taken an active part in Homecoming week, pep rallies, and other such activities. Each club president was to choose a designated place in the halls where his club was to display its layers of crepe paper, balloons, and large posters which inspired every student with an out¬ standing state of enthusiasm and wonder- ance of which organization would win the spirit award. The decorations were all fantas¬ tic, and left the judges with a hard decision of distinguishing the very best decoration. Al¬ though the decision was a hard one to make, the G.A.A. came in first, winning the spirit award, Phoenix staff winning second place, and the fi-Club, Spanish Club, and Physics Club, all tying for third place. Each girl submit¬ ted two of her senior portraits to be judged for photogenic qualities and natural beauty by a professional photography studio. Mr. Dave Woody, of Woody’s House of Portraits, decided upon the winner and three runners-up. His background in photography in¬ cludes his earning a Masters Degree in Photography and a Fellow Photography State Degree. He was later honored with the office of President in the West Virginia and Virginia Professional Photogra¬ phy Associations. He has also received many awards on state and national levels for his fine workmanship in photography. During the judging period, Mr. Woody may be quoted as saying, “The decision is a difficult one to make.” And after many thoughtful exclusions, he presented the students of John S. Battle with these four girls, one holder of the Miss Phoenix title, and three runners-up. This year through the S.C.A. a good communication line was opened among students, teachers, and administration. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and open, due to the administration’s allowing free and frequent discussions among the different school groups. Mr. Farnsworth, as well as other members of the administration, was present at several S.C.A. sched¬ uled meetings to hear the voice of the student body through their elected representatives. Several new committees, including a steering committee, were formed for the purpose of meeting with the administra¬ tion to discuss problems within the school involving various groups and activities. Outside of this valuable addition to the school network, the S.C.A., under the supervision of Mr. Mash¬ bum and Mr. Gregory, managed the school store, sponsored clean-up week, three assembly programs, and took part in the glass recycling drive. S.C.A. members also found time to attend state and district S.C.A. meetings in the Saltville and Roanoke areas, respectively. 93 Junior Civitan Has Prosperous Year Pictured (left to right): Mr. Dan Long, sponsor; David Hunsaker, Secretary; Conny Sauls, Treasurer; Greg Cole, Vice-President; Kim Kennedy, Sweetheart; Daryl Cox, President; Hugh Davis, Executive Secretary; Stewart Phelps, Parliamentarian; Mr. Steve Smeltz- er, sponsor. The entry was a splendid float, the production of which required much work and imagination. Many activities of the Civitans were underway in the winter months. During the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the members prepared a bountiful food basket for a needy family. Fund raising pro¬ jects were carried on throughout the year to gain enough financial support to sponsor a Valentine’s Dance. Spring offered another opportunity for Civitan members. Several Civitan members attended the annual Civitan Convention held at scenic Gatlinburg, Tennessee in April. The Junior Civitan members experi¬ enced a full and active year. 94 Co-sponsor — Mr. Dan Long Co-sponsor — Mr. Stephen Smeltzer Civitan Officers (pictured left to right): First row: Daryl Cox, President. The Civinettes have always been a great help to the school and community and this year was certainly no exception. The club’s sponsors, Mrs. Long and Mrs. McCall, kept all members busy with their various activi¬ ties throughout the 1971-1972 session. Co-sponsor — Mrs. McCall. [ yj v •? Members worked hard this year selling light bulbs m order to sponsor the dance, considered by many to be the biggest and best Homecoming Dance ever held at Battle. The amount of money the club members made from the sales enabled the club to hire Strong Arm,” a talented local band, to provide the entertainment. Besides this annual event, the Key Club also helped the Kiwanians with their annual “Pancake Sale” in downtown Bristol. During Christmas, the members gathered presents and donated them to needy children at a nearby orphanage. Besides this boost to the games, the members of the B-Club also ran the concession stands, and kept our coaches and administra¬ tion decked out in school colored shirts and ties. The B-Club demonstrated fur¬ ther school spirit by tying for third place in the Homecoming decora¬ tions contest. It contains double the advertising coverage of last year, twice the amount of color, and more pages than previous Battle yearbooks have contained. However, the yearbook staff’s primary concern was quality rather than the quantity. The staff participated in school activities to as great an extent as time would permit. The staff placed second in the Homecoming deco¬ rations contest. Fund raising projects (primary ones are yearbook and advertising sales) included an appearance on Klassroom Kwiz, spon¬ sorship of the Miss Phoenix Contest, and the sponsorship of an as¬ sembly featuring a well known folk singer. Other fund raising projects included bake sales, car washes, and car window washes. Heading the 1972 Phoenix staff were co-editors Patty Stoots and Michelle Townsend. Under their leadership served Business Manager Eugenia Shew, Advertising Manager Beth Snodgrass, Publicity and Circulation Manager Judy Musick, and Photographers Carl Jessee, Mark Tolley and Tim Tabor. The staff is sponsored by Miss Anne P. Vermillion. Sponsor — Miss Anne P. Vermillion 120 Battle’s Best Yearbook Ever! Miss Anne P. The dramatic season at John Battle High School began with a Christmas production entitled A Christmas otpourn. The program, which onsisted of a readers’ theatre adaptation and a one-act play, was given by the speech and drama students. Experience was gained in stag e movement, dialogue, make-up, lighting, properties costume, sound effects, and scene construction. ™ Th t S A ni0r ClaSS presented an entertaining three-act comedy, The Whole Truth, to a capacity audience in March. Many seniors received their first stage experience by participating in this play, and the audience re¬ sponded with laughter and applause. In March the Speech and Drama Class entered the Southwest District One-Act Play Festival, and brought back additional honors to John Battle. The class also presented three one-act plays to several English classes in May. Students were given complete production responsibilities for these performances, and were able to put t eir study of dramatics to a practical use. After an enthusiastic study of dramatics and many long hours of preparation, successful theatre was again presented at John Battle in 1972 . 126 4-H Club Members Have a Year of Exciting Events Pictured (left to right): Carolyn Alexander, Treasurer; Shelia Brewer, Secretary; Debbie Campbell, President; Janet Leonard, Reporter; Susan Warren, Vice-President. One of the outstanding events of the year was the “Share the Fun Con¬ test,” held in April. The final, but perhaps best feature was the custom¬ ary attendance of 4-H Camp, open to all mem¬ bers interested in going. 127 Senior Class Looks Towards Future HOW SWEET IT IS HIGH SCHOOL First row (left to right): Jean Neese, Treasurer; Lois Sproles, Chaplain. President — Polly Cooper Members of the Class of ’72 began looking toward the future as their high school years came to a close. College Day influenced many seniors as to their choice of schools and careers, while many seniors planned to enter the business world soon after high school graduation. The Class Prophecy, composed by Senior class officers and their committees, and pre¬ sented Class night, was indicative of the viewpoint from which seniors visualized themselves and others in future years. The Class Will and Testament added a light touch to the sentiment class members held for each other. Although graduation events highlighted the Seniors’ year of activities, credit must also be given to pre-graduation activities, such as a appear¬ ance on Klassroom Kwiz and sponsorship of a talent show held for the student body. Second row: Vonnie Edwards, Secretary; Bo Snodgrass, Sgt. at Arms; Bryan Yoho, Vice-President. Sponsor — Mrs. Gotham The Junior Class, under the leadership of Mrs. Gotham, sponsored one of the best proms in Battle’s history, according to many students. Through magazine sales, car washes, and other such fund raising activi¬ ties, class members were able to honor the graduating seniors with an entertaining evening. Under the leadership of Ike Anderson, the class raised almost $1,000 for the preparation of the prom. Along with the excitement of the p rom came the anticipation of re¬ ceiving Senior class rings. The ordering of class rings plus attending and sponsoring the Junior-Senior Prom were the highlighting events of the Junior class. 150 Belinda Adams Caroline Adams Becky Anderson Liz Anderson Ike Anderson Mike Bailey Brenda Barker Joyce Barker Phil Barker Randy Barker Juanita Burress Barry Bays Janice Black Ava Blaylock Debbie Bolling Gary Boothe Teresa Bott Danny Bowman Huberta Bowman David Bradley Becky Braswell Phil Brewer Gail Bryant Linda Brooks Mike Buckner Teresa Byington Celeste Canter Janet Cappalli Kay Carter Bill Cassidy Wanda Clawson Debbie Collins Steve Compton Barbara Countiss Willie Crusenberry Shelia Denton A! The Sophomores proved to be a school spirited class at Battle this year. They were consistent winners of the spirit stick, which was awarded to the class that best exhibited school spirit at pep rallies. Nine Sophomores started on the Varsity football team throughout the season, and a large number were listed on the Varsity roster. All but five players on the Junior Varsity basketball team were Sopho¬ mores, and eight our of nine Junior Varsity Cheerleaders were mem¬ bers of the Sophomore class. There were also two Sophomores offi- ciers on the Student Cooperative Association Executive Council. Thus, the 1972 Sophomore Class members were active in student affairs at John Battle. 164 Sponsor — Mr. Ralph Booher Jenny Abel Carol Adkins Larry Alexander Lynn Anders Tommy Baker Debbie Barrett Mike Bell Lisa Benfield Randy Berry Ted Blaylock Donna Bolling Susan Booher Tony Bowers Wayne Branscome Phyllis Brewer 165 Stephen Brewer Terry Brewer Pam Brown Kelly Calloway Betty Campbell Teresa Caudill Debbie Childress Jerry Chorosevic Jimmy Christian David Clark Doris Clendenen Terry Colbert Joey Cooper Vernon Corum Phillip Countiss Donnie Campbell Sandy Campbell Tommy Canter Tina Carrier 166 Anette Craft Mike Cross Jane Cunningham Lola Davidson Joy Davis Patty Dinkins Sandy Dixon Mark Draper Cheryl Duty Diane Duty x Loretta Duckett, Teresa Eadesi Charles Estep Debbie Estep Phillip Ferski 167 w Charles Fields V Pat Fitzgerald yT erry Fleenor ' Valerie Fleenor Diane Fraser Sherry Freeman Denise Frohling Linda Godfrey Danny Godsey Gary Goodson Patsy Greer Dennis Grizzle Gary Grizzle ‘■ ' Debbie Gunning Johnny Hall 168 Debbie Hawkins Vicki Hawks Dale Hayden William Heartwell Randy Helms Ethel Helton Janet Helton Kent Henderson Janet Henley Trinka Hensley Brenda Hill John Hill v Janet Hilliard ... Freshman Class members were active in many school activities this year. Many Freshman boys played on the Junior Varsity football, baseball, wrestling, and basketball teams, and several participants received awards for outstanding performances. The girls took an ac¬ tive part in athletics, as nine of the eleven girls on the Junior Varsity basketball team were members of the Freshman class. Many individuals from the class participated in events of a more academic nature. Freshmen were participants in forensic meets, art contests, the Voice of Democracy Contest, and found time for partici¬ pation in extracurricular activities such as plays and ballets. The Freshman Class, sponsoredby Mr. Loggans, had a busy 1971- ’72 school year. 176 Mr. J. W. The eighth graders, sponsored by Mrs. Collins, began their five year term at Battle by compiling a history of all students, including a listing of elementary schools attended, and any honors received in elementary school. The students demonstrated an interest in Battle’s athletics by decorating the lockers of the eighth grade football and basketball players. They also proved their school spirit by winning the spirit stick at several of the pep ral¬ lies. Next year’s Freshman class should be an enthusiastic group of achievers. With the end of this school year and the completion of this yearbook, we, the co-editors of the 1972 Phoenix, leave our fellow students with a record of time. Upon the preceding pages are pictured moods and feelings of moments passed, a portrayal of seekers of knowledge, benders and menders, schemers and dreamers, partici¬ pators and spectators, lovers of the good times and each other. Although the hours were long and the work hard, we are proud of this, the finished product. And, with the coming of the years ahead, and the continual passing of unceasing time, we can take a moment to muse over this successful effort to freeze time inevitably. But, if the student has decided that this year held no great significance for him, perhaps he should ponder this parting statement of the 1972 Phoenix. “Every moment of time carries away a part of your life. . . you were a part of that moment. . . it is now a part of you.” 228 Michelle Townsend Patty Stoots 1972 Phoenix Staff Michelle Townsend Co-Editor Beth Snodgrass Advertising Manager Patty Stoots Co-Editor Eugenia Shew Business Manager Judy Musick Publicity Chairman Polly Cooper Reporter Teresa Byington Vonnie Edwards Carla Jessee Jimmy Jones Velma Mays Becky Moore Susan Moser Marie Mullins Lynn Neeves Burt Ogle Sammy Wagner Assistants Carl Jessee Tim Tabor Mark Tolley Photographers Classic Studio Class Portraits Miss Anne P.
