Ijoenix John S. Battle High School Bristol, Virginia Volume XII Editor . . . Phyllis Bowers Assistant Editor . . . Chris Koch Sponsor . . . Miss Anne P. Vermillion The loss of Mrs. Mary Lou Tedder, Art teacher, at John 5. Battle for eleven years, was a great one for students and faculty. She dedicated thirty-two years of her life to the teaching profession, and beneficially influenced the lives of many young people. Mrs. Tedder ' s aims and accomplishments shall not be forgotten nor go unrewarded. To live in hearts we leave behind, is not to die, ■ ■ Campbell — Hallowed Ground ' Our Dedication It is seldom that students find a teacher who is willing to sacrifice as much time, effort, or energy to any cause as she has to John S. Battle High School. It is to one of these select few that we dedicate the 1971 Phoenix. Although Mrs. Brenda Hagy has only taught two years at John Battle, she has been an in¬ spiration to all. We admire her because of her knowledge and her dedication to John Battle. She has helped students to know and understand things in life which really count. She seems to take a personal interest in each individual student which we think is an important quality of a good teacher. We respect her because she respects us, and because she has the courage to stand for that which she believes to be right. It is with sincere appreciation and warm regard that the Phoe¬ nix staff humbly dedicates the 1971 Phoenix to Mrs. Brenda Hagy. Mental . . . Physical . . . 4 Social . . . The beginning of a new era has been started in the field of interscholastic athletics. For the first time John S. Battle produced girls Junior Varsity and Varsity basketball teams. They played a full schedule of eleven games. Even though the losses were numerous, with each new game they showed additional improve¬ ment. Next year with the experience gained this year, the coaches feel John Battle will rank higher in the standings. The coaches would also like to thank the J.V. Cheerleaders for their untiring support. h mm Coaches: Junior Varsity Coach — Mrs. Brenda Hagy; Varsity Coach — Miss Julia Carmichel 7 A J.V. Manager, Janis Black; Varsity Manager, Twila Garrett. As a prerequisite to good team¬ work, the cheerleaders, headed by Vickie Kyle, attended cheerleading camp in Cookeville, Tennessee where they were awarded five rib¬ bons for various competitive events, and the coveted award, a spirit stick. Returning home, the cheerleaders promoted various projects includ¬ ing sponsoring a cheerleading clinic at Erwin, judging a cheerleading clinic in Hampton, Tennessee, and planning a special event every week for the football team. The highlight of the year, how¬ ever, was Homecoming week. At this time, the cheerleaders orga¬ nized a contest allowing each club to enter, each decorating a separate wing of the hall. The prize for best decoration was awarded the Trojan J. V. Cheerleaders by the judging Virginia High cheerleaders. 64 the Green Machine ' ■■1 1 |Vf« 2 9H H i 2t || B Sharon Sharrett, Mary Ellen Owens, Vicki Cross, Vicki Bowman, Vickie Kyle, Frankie Copenhaver, Kathy Harrison, Jean Neese, Judy Fuller Karen Balthis — 1st year Debbie Collins Captain 2nd year Darlene Sharret — 1st year j.v. cheerleaders do it — all right! The Debate Society has as its chief aim the furthering of the skills of reasoning, research, and extemporaneous speaking. A J.S.B. debater must first be a speaker. He must present his facts, attempting to persuade his audience to accept his point of view. He must also be a fighter. He must acquire the ability to withstand heavy criti¬ cism of defeat, and then, to recover and rebuild his argument under pressure. In debating, winning is not the sole objective, a debater derives his satisfaction from knowning that he is an expert in his field, and that he possesses the ability to argue his convictions with skill and force. 109 Senior science club Janie Anderson - Secretary- Treasurer Mr. B. The Annual Staff consisted of members from grades nine through twelve, and each grade is headed by a managing editor; Senior, Chris Koch; Junior, Michelle Townsend; Sophomore, Debbie Collins, and Fresh¬ man, Tim Tabor. These editors distributed work among various members and received assignments from the Editor-in-Chief, Phyllis Bowers. Through co-operation of each, working together, the quality of an excellent yearbook was accomplished. This year the staff worked especially hard to pro¬ duce a larger, organized annual with a finer quality cover. The photographers Tony Brown and Chris Long endeavored to capture students in the midst of routine school activities. Then each activity was fitted to the theme of the yearbook, Emotions. To raise money for the yearbook, the staff partici¬ pated in bake sales, carried on a more effective circula¬ tion sales program, and sold over a thousand dollars in business advertisements. Because much work was done, much was accom¬ plished. Staff members actively participated in many extra-curricular activities in order to evenly represent the students. Many also found time to head other clubs and activities while working on the staff. Each staff member was special in respect to the work he ac¬ complished and ideas he shared with other members. Each may now be proud of the common goal, Phoe¬ nix 1971. 112 -lit , T jt . t SH, M I Future Business Leaders of America The Future Business Leaders of America Club is open for membership to all students enrolled in business classes who maintain a C average in those subjects. But where has all the time gone? It went by so fast. Those first few days were days of adaption. When an announcement was made to Seniors — that meant us! ynderclassmen were made to respect us — stand up — here we are . . . Seniors. Who were the biggest idiots in the cafeteria? US! Almighty ball games, basketball — we watched for the last time as students of J.S.B. So many activities, which in real¬ ity were trivial, to us were the greatest ever! And now, after the prom . . . what should we expect? Graduation is so sad, so solemn, so sentimental. With us we ' ll take a treasury of memories that will never stray from our minds . . . We wanted to make this year one of the best. We survived our first tries at college boards and began to think seriously about applying to colleges. The Class of ' 72 met the problems that have faced past classes as they worked on Junior Projects in order to meet the financial obliga¬ tions. The highlight of the ' 70-71 school year was the Junior-Senior Prom. We were host to the Seniors. The Prom was beautiful and a great success. The coming of the class rings symbolized the approach of our Senior year. 152 Phil Addison Danny Akers Wanda Anders Eddie Arnold 153 Diane Bott Kirby Branson Randy Branson Priscella Breeding Anthony Brewer Joyce Brooks Alan Browning Freddie Burnette Joyce Bryant Debbie Campbell Joyce Canter Brenda Carrico Larry Church Coy Clark 154 Linda Clark David Cochran Alicia Cole Greg Cole Connie Colley Frankie Copenhaver Janie Cook Mark Cook Donnita Couch Gail Countiss Daryl Cox Mary Cox Vicki Cross Jerry Cunningham 155 Larry Cunningham Hugh Davis Mike Denton Timmy Denton 156 Larry Feathers Sherry Felty Hope Fields Judy Fields Johnny Fleenor Sharon Fleenor David Ford 157 Jeanetta Harris Kathy Harrison Sharon Hawks Ted Hawks Buford Hawkins Mike Hayden Diane Hayden Carolyn Goodson Reva Goodson James Grogan George Hagy Roy Hall Harold Harless Ronnie Harley 158 Bill Hayter Kenneth Hayter Mike Holm an Linda Huller 159 160 George Millard Wanda Millard Lisa Mitchell Wanda Mitchell Susan Moody Mike Moore David Moretz Susan Moser Kathy Mullins Judy Murray Kate Mumpower Gary Murray Gary Musick Joyce Musick 161 Judy Musick Jean Neese Joe Newton Mary Ellen Owens Jane Peltier Shirley Peters Stewart Phelps Larry Phillips Freddie Pope Susan Ray Brenda Reynolds 162 Sandra Reynolds Ann Roe Mary Rosenbalm Karen Rutherford t p 1 ' Don Sheffey Eugenia Shew Joe Shutters David Sims David Salyers Conny Sauls Gail Shaffer Jimmy Singleton Judy Smith Pam Smithey 163 Junior Stout Cathy Staton Rebecca Stringer Lois Sproles Lloyd Sproles Randy Sproles Patty Stoots Evelyn Stroop Virginia Swygert Steve Tennpenny Carol Testerman Mark Tolley Michelle Townsend Ronnie Vanover 164 Jerry Wise Jack Wright Andy Yates Patricia Warren Margie Webb Barbara White Tony Wingate Diane Worley David Worley Kathy Worley Debbie Venable Betty Vestal Jeff Warren Marion Warren 165 xmilWHilr ' s p E S Debbie Collins, President; Scotty Rasnake, Vice-President; Vonnie Edwards, Secretary. We look back on our Sophomore year as the most spirited year we have spent. We took part in making posters and signs to boost spirit at Junior Varsity games, and we realized that there was more participation among the students. With our second year of foreign language, plus biolo¬ gy, and geometry behind us, we heaved a sigh of relief. We felt as if we had climbed a mountain, yet there was so much left to do! With our Junior year ahead of us bringing the hardships of giving a Prom, and our Senior year with the final plans for college, we could not give up. We looked upon our final years with deter¬ mination, hope, and anticipation. 168 Brenda Barker Phil Barker Randy Barker Donna Barrett Sherry Bartee Janis Black Ava Blaylock Bobby Blevins Debbie Bolling Susan Boo her Gary Boothe Teresa Bott Danny Bowman Nuberta Bowman Becky Braswell Linda Brooks Teresa Byington Wanda Dishner Willie Crusenberry Wanda Cumbow Jackie Denton Leon Denton Peggy Durham Terry Dickson Audrey Canter Celeste Canter Lois Carroll Kay Carter Mike Clark Wanda Clawson Lantha Colley Debbie Collins Steve Compton Barbara Countiss Sheila Denton Steve DePriest Johnny Durham 170 Vonnie Edwards Curtis Felty Diane Fields Mary Fields Doug Fleenor Edwina Fleenor Mona Fleenor Janet Fortner Darrell Fraley Carolyn Gallimore Kathy Gallimore Cheryl Garrett Twilla Garrett James Gobble Brenda Goodson Teresa Hale Darrell Harley Donna Harley Dean Harrison Debbie Hawks Doug Hawthorne Debbie Hayden Mike Henry Melony Hensley Roland Hensley Betty Hill Mike Hobbs Debbie Holden Kathy Horne Darlene Huckaby Mike Huffman Glenna Kieth Larry Leonard Mechelle Leonard Cindy Mabe Dean Marsh Claudia Martin Brenda Mason Rita Mason Donna Matthews Velma Mays Teresa Kilby Kathy George Koch Anonthy Lane Gay Large Gale Leonard Kemper Meade Cathy McCauley Wanda McCracken Vorice McNew Peggy Minnick Patty Mildard Craig Milhorn Billy Moore Blaine Morris Jerry Mussick Sue Murray Roger Murray Jeff Mumpower Marie Mullins SaraJi Nash Jerry Newman Rose Nunez Fay Nunley Doug Owens Patty Phillips Janet Pippin Gary Plum Jo Ann Robinson Steve Robinson Sammy Rock Donald Roe Johnny Ross Jerry Rust Margaret Ryan Gail Shankel Darlene Sharrett Carla Shumaker Angela Smith Neal Smith Bo Snobgrass Jr. Snodgrass Daniel Sproles Adina Stanley Diane Sterns Ann Stevens Billy Stout Donna Stroup Eddie Taylor Patty Tenpenny Ramona Thomas What ' s up. As we walked into B.H.S. the first day of our Freshman year, we felt proud be¬ cause finally we had the eighth grade to look down upon. We managed to stay busy througout the year. There were ball games and pep rallies which we attended and at which we cheered. We became more active in clubs and club activities. And then there were our studies. It took a lot of time and much concentrated studying, but we managed to pass everything. As we look back now, we realize we have grown with B.H.S. It was a year of hard work and fun. But we know it has been a year we ' ll always remember. 178 Jenny Abel Kevin Abel Joyce Adams Carol Adkins Marie Akers Lynn Anders Phillip Anderson Ginger Arnold Jerry Arnold Shonda Atkins Rusty Baer Tommy Baker Doug Ball Karen Balthis Cathy Barker Connie Barker Debbie Barker Drema Barker Eva Barker Trina Barlow Debbie Barrett Lisa Benfield Mike Belle Randy Berry Terry Brewer Ted Blaylock Donna Bolling Tony Bowers Wayne Branscome Phyllis Brewer 179 Melanie Buchanan Kelly Calloway Betty Campbell Donnie Campbell Sandra Campbell Tina Carrier Mike Carrol Jerry Carter Millie Gather Teresa Caudill Debbie Childress Jerry Chorosevic Jimmy Christian David Clark Daisy Clawson Linda Clawson Lynn dayman Doris Clendenen Joey Cooper Vernon Corum Phillip Countiss Mike Cross William Bugger Cross Jane Cunningham Lola Davidson Joy Davis Richard Dean Terry Denton Jeff Devore Janet Dixon 180 Dennis Grizzle Gary Grizzle Debbie Gunning Johnny Hall Gay Lynn Harless Kathy Harley Cathy Harmon Vicky Harmon Pam Harrison Vicki Hawks Cathy Hawkins Debbie Hawkins David Hayden Randy Helms Ethel Helton Janet Helton Kent Henderson David Henry l et Hensle Trinka Hensley Bill Hickok Brenda Hill John Hill Janet Hillard Jan Hobbs Sharon Hobbs Shelley Hobbs Susan Horn Revonda Houser Terry Houser 181 Patty Dinkins Sandra Dixon Mark Draper Cheryl Duty Diane Duty Loretta Duckett Teresa Lades Charles Estep Debbie Estep Ronnie Felty Phillip Feristy Charles Fields David Fields Debbie Fields Ella Fields Pat Fitzgerald Lester Fleenor Jerry Fleenor Valerie Fleenor Diane Frazier Sherry Freeman Denise Frohling Patty Gallimore Danny Godsey Linda Godfrey Mike Goins Gary Goodson Kenny Grant Patsy Greer Joe Anne Gregory 182 Roberta Huber Barbara Hughes Cathy Hughes Linda Hughes Jack Jackson Larry James Linda Jennings Pamela Jessee Darius Johnson Jimmy Jones Rhonda Jones Ronnie Jones Debbie Keith Darrell Ketron Debbie Ketron Theresa Ketron Ricky Kiser Mike Knittel Jerry Large Jean Lawson Evelyn Laughlin Rebecca Leab Jeff Leonard Martha Lester Sherry Lester Leisa Lilley Tommy Lineburger Steve Luchini Hazel Love Shirley Malone 183 Johnny Marion Gloria Marsh Greg Martin Joe McChestney Chuck McClanahan Judy McNamara Betty McNew Wayne Melvin Carolyn Miles Kenneth Millard Jewel Mitchell Becky Moore Sandra Morgan Jennie Morris Janet Mullins Danny Mumpower Carolyn Nicholson Sandy Noonkester Florine Nunley Linda Nunley Lynn Ornduff Brenda Owens Linda Owens Jeff Pack Mike Parks Sharon Penley Benjy Phelps Chris Placak Reggie Planta Myron Poe 184 Kim Poole Johnny Powers Shirley Powers Brenda Pruitt Cindy Quesenberry Richard Quesenberry Denver Raines Jeannie Ramsey Mike Rankin Roger Rasnake Jimmy Richardson John Rice Danny Roark Ricky Roark David Roberts Robin Roberts Kathy Robinson Alice Roop Barbara Rose Barbara Rosenbalm Dennis Salyers Kim Sanders Becky Shaffer Tim Shaffer Don Schaffer Kathy Sharrett Rita Sheffey Sherry Sheffey Nelson Shortt Hope Simcox ' I 185 Kathy Singleton Darrel Slagle Danny Smith Frankie Smith Joey Smith Ricky Smith Sam Smith Marsha Snader Beth Snodgrass Shelia Snead Teresa Snead Jack Sorah Penny Sourbeer Qiarlene Sproles David Sproles Eddie Sproles Kenny Sproles James Stanley Karen Stine Ron Stearns Gary Sullivan Cindy Sulueski Tim Tabor Irvin Tate Debbie Taylor Rachel Tester Gale Thompson Debbie Vance Barbara Vanover Mike Venable CJl 186 Ricky Venable Kenny Vestal Becky Wampler Peggy Warren Susan Warren Brenda Watson Mark Waycaster Ricky Weatherly Raymond Wilson Susan Wilson Varina Woodward Cathy Wooten David Wright Kay Wynegar Michelle Yocum Guy Yoho Doug Yon Jeff Young Bill Zarbis Eighth grade officers President — Pam Meredith (not pictured) Vice President — Debbie Phipps Secretary — Vera Jessee Historian — Jackie York Reporter — Dennis Dutton Sergeant at Arms — Greg Yoho K. It all seemed so complicated at first, but finally we were able to adjust. Even the race against the clock between classes became easier after awhile. For the first time we became a mem¬ ber of the high school crowd. We found that the games were more meaningful to us. We were able to join clubs and partici¬ pate in them. We also had a different teacher for each class which was a great change. We felt “bigger now that we were a part of the high school scene. 195 Emotions tall small Emotions rise fall Emotions up down Emotions grow where the heart abounds. We hoped to have expressed some of the emo¬ tions high school students developed through their experiences at John S. Battle. These emotions could be found in the men¬ tal, physical, and social aspects in the life of every B.H.S. student. Without the great cooperation I received from the Annual Staff, teachers, and espe¬ cially you, the student body, this yearbook could not have been a success. I would like to gratefully thank all those who worked to help make this 1871 Phoenix possible. I would especially like to thank Miss Vermil¬ lion for her time and effort she devoted to this yearbook. 197 Student Directory Abel, Jenny 179 Abel, Kevin 179,50 Abel, Mike Addison, Dennis 153
