Phoenix, Fabulous Bird of Mythology From antiquity until well into modern times, the fabulous Phoenix has found its place time and time again in the life of man. There have been islands and constellations named for the Phoenix. The BIRD has found its way into many a design on coats of arms. Queen Eliz- abeth chose the Phoenix as her emblem. The first United States seal in 1732 had a phoenix as a part of the design. The City of San Francisco also had the Phoenix as the design on its seal after the great fire of San Francisco. The state of Flawaii had a seal de- signed in 1952 with the BIRD PHOENIX to represent the change from monarchy to a freer form of government. The great seal of VIRGINIA, reverse side, 1877, bears a Phoenix. PHOENIX.
