. John Battle High School Bristol, Virginia The only Biblical reference to the phoenix [Atri-ci ry In the middle ages magical Alchemy preceded scientific chemistry, above symbolism and Kabalistic signs were known as the PHOENIX Let us admire the colors that embellish the phoenix, neither nature nor art have ever made anything so beautiful. The back of his golden neck is cov- ered with a down of saffron. Purple shines upon his throat. Rays of gold and fire shoot in a thousand lights from his wings impatient to measure the immensity of space. His tail more beautiful than those of the birds har- nessed to Juno’s chariot, is scintillating with reflections of purest gold. He does not display his riches like the peacock tormented by stupid pride. These rich colors emerge from a background of purest iris, shading into each other with a magic that enchants the eye. At one time it seems that his grace exceeds his beauty, at other times, his beauty exceeds his grace. His eye has the brillance of the hyacinth. His colors can only be compared to the lustre of precious stones blended by the skill of the artist. A double crest as if made by the hands of the Graces decorates the head of the phoe- nix. It covers his brain, seat of his intelligence, workshop of his meditations, depository of his knowledge. Neither man nor god troubles to feed the phoenix. He feeds on nothing but the gentle breath of the zephyr, the sweet juices of perfumes, the tears of incense and the sun’s rays. He drinks only ambrosia, nectar, the dew fall- ing from the heavens or the innocent mists falling from the rivers, the lakes and the seas. These are his dishes, his beverages and his nourish- ment. He does not eat seeds, the hope of the ploughman. He does not rav- ish the rich harvests. He is neither brigand nor thief. He is an honest bird. He respects the joy of men and their loves. That he should live so long is the greatest mystery in the world. For him the centuries are years, the min- utes are days, the days are hours, and so he is named the Eternal Bird. He is the faithful companion of light and for her he lives, rejuvenated in order to always live with her. When the phoenix has lived five hundred years, it builds itself a nest in the branches of an oak or in a palm tree. In this it collects cinnamon, spiken- ard, and myrrh and of these materials builds a pile on which it deposits it- self and dying, breathes out its last breath amidst odors. He then returns to life for the few moments it takes to beat his wings until he has kindled his nest in flames. These flames will destroy him but in the same spot from these ashes a new phoenix is born destined to live as long as its predeces- sor. When the young phoenix has grown up and gained sufficient strength, it lifts its nest from the tree (its own cradle and its parent’s sepulchre) and carries it to the city of Heliopolis in Egypt and deposits it in the temple of the Sun. rttUiJl..;.: . k THEUBiuV f-y BENU (bynw) name might have been pronounced boin from which Greek derived PHOENIX 2 Phoenix, Fabulous Bird of Mythology From antiquity until well into modern times, the fabulous Phoenix has found its place time and time again in the life of man. There have been islands and constellations named for the Phoenix. The BIRD has found its way into many a design on coats of arms. Queen Eliz- abeth chose the Phoenix as her emblem. The first United States seal in 1732 had a phoenix as a part of the design. The City of San Francisco also had the Phoenix as the design on its seal after the great fire of San Francisco. The state of Flawaii had a seal de- signed in 1952 with the BIRD PHOENIX to represent the change from monarchy to a freer form of government. The great seal of VIRGINIA, reverse side, 1877, bears a Phoenix. PHOENIX. But, there are few to whom we can at- tribute all these characteristics, one of these is Mrs. Mildred T. Foster. Devoted both to her work and to her students, she has won the admiration and affection of her students, her friends, and the faculty. Battle High School is now in its eighth year of operation with an enrollment of 1208 and a faculty of 63. A great fleet of school buses bring the majority of students attending the high school in from all parts of the county. More than 50% of the students enrolled at John Battle live closer to another school in the county or the city of Bristol than they do to John Battle. Eight years ago when John Battle opened its doors to the students for the first time, there was no stadium, no field house, no parking lot, no freshman or 8th grade classes to recall just a few things about that first year. Today, eight years later, there have been many changes in curriculum, numbers of students and faculty and staff, additions inside and out. Many of these changes and the outstanding events of the current year will be shown in this volume of the yearbook. Miss Phoenix is rated on photogenic at- tributes and personal qualities. So when the newborn Phoenix first is seen Her feathered subjects all adore their queen, And while she makes her progress through the East, From every grove her numerous train’s increased; Each poet of the air her glory sings.
