The 1963 Phoenix LD 150 1 k • ; Published by The Senior Class John S. Battle High School Bristol, Virginia 7 jIBRABY OF VIRGINIA u, . With the passage of time, the experience of this school year may soon fade into forget- fulness. Therefore, it has been the aim of this year ' s staff to capture on the following pages school life at Battle — academically, athletically, organizationally, socially . . . The staff hopes that it has accomplished its aim as it presents to you, the students, the 1963 PHOENIX. Student Each Day Begins Ernie Sullins, SCA chaplain, pre- sides over daily opening exercises. This includes morning devotions, pledge to the flag, and school an- nouncements. ARE YOU SURE YOU WERE ILL? WHY DID YOU NOT ANSWER YOUR PHONE? . . . Students line up to get excused for being absent. In charge is Mr. Webb, attendance director. 6 The first senior class play ever to be presented at Battle was a huge success. PUBLICITY MAD, a three act comedy by Ken Parker, was enjoyed by both the cast and the audience. In the above picture Susan Page (Sandra Hale) checks the con- dition of her playwright boyfriend Chris (Larry Beavers) as news- man Ernie Sullins looks on. Senior Class Play PUBLICITY MAD actresses create a scene on the stage. 7 It takes hours of hard work to make a play successful as cast mem- bers Peggy Latham, Rita Caudill, Pat James, and Deborah Haga soon discover. Before the curtain rises . . . rushed moments of preparation. Here Carolyn Odum puts make-up on Allen Lewis. Viewing the operation are “actors” Garry Worley and Tommy Maxwell. Senior Class Play Policeman Larry Rowe and Monte Ogle “create a scene” while trying to decide how to cap- ture a cobra snake. A few days after the final performance of the play, director Mrs. Betty Morton sur- prised the cast with a party. Here she is shown as she cut the cake. Larry Rowe mixes hard work and fun as he struggles to meet a term paper deadline. Disregarding Rowe’s efforts are Larry Beavers and Tommy Maxwell. Enjoying themselves are Peggy Latham, Sharron Tate, Rita Caudill, Judy Worley, and Linda Wilson. The seniors enjoy one last social event before final exams and graduation the class picnic. Above, Ernie Sullins, class president, chats with Linda Taylor and Vivian Worley. The food is delicious! At least Peggy Latham, Pat Leonard, and Darala Trivette seem to think so. COME AND GET IT! The food is ready and the seniors are famished. Seniors dance before “dining.” Senior Class Picnic Barbara Hale and Jean Keesee, members of the GAA basketball team get ready for the game. “Girls this isn’t a serious game,” reminds Captain Latham, “but we can’t afford to lose. Imagine be- ing defeated by our mothers and grandmothers.” Fans watch as PTA mothers and GAA girls carry on the game. “Cheerleader” Sam Arnold entertains fans during half-time. GAA — PTA Basketball Game Features Members of the court: Debra Haga, Donna Buckles, Robin Lovins, and Sandra Hale. Charles Owens, captain for the game, presents Queen Sharron with flowers and crowns her. Sharron is escorted by Ernie Sullins. It ' s a big moment for Sharron Tate, queen. Homecoming 1962 Homecoming, 1962, was a momentous occasion. Much time was spent campaigning for queen candidates, decorating the field, and preparing for the big dance. The homecoming game resulted in victory as BHS defeated Rye Cove 35-0. During half-time the Trojan band formed a stage in which Sharron Tate, the chosen queen, was crowned. Charles Owens, captain for the game, crowned Sharron amidst a cheering crowd. 15 Valentine Sweetheart Peggy Latham h Outstanding Athlete Danny Vincill — — ' Gene Thompson, well known area sportswriter introduces the Mr. Casto Ramsey of Emory and Henry College guest speaker. speaks on the athletic program. The council, composed of homeroom representatives, club presidents, class presidents, and the editors of the two school publications, played a great part in directing student activities. Southeastern assembly programs were given under the sponsorship of the SCA. The annual Valentine Dane was di- rected and sponsored by the Council. Un- der the leadership of the SCA, BHS fin- ished “in the tops” in a local Cancer Drive Campaign. Members of the council pre- sided over morning exercises and the bless- ings at lunch periods. President Charles Owens presides at a council meeting. Nora Roark, Charles Owens, and Linda Wilson direct the voting. The official school seal is affixed to each ballot. Trojan Band MUCH PRIDE goes with the BIG GREEN AND WHITE BAND, directed by Miss Lula Williams. Carrying the reputation of the school wherever it goes, the band has made an excellent showing. I HE 1963 Trojan band has been very active participating in local parades, festivals, and playing at football games. In the Bristol Band Festival, it re- ceived a rating of three. This was the first year the young band had taken part in the festival. In the latter part of the year the band traveled to Vin- ton, Virginia where it took part in the Dogwood Festival. Each summer band members attend camp where they are drilled on march- ing procedures and group playing. WE ALL ARE PROUD OF OUR BAND! Concert Band In addition to being a marching band, the Trojan group also per- forms as a concert band. It has given several concerts before the student body and the public. In district competition the Tro- jan Concert Band received a high rating of two. f f M Patsy Combs and Ann Hardwick, clarinet players, seem calm and collected before the curtains open.
