iO 2fL HO £99IX 1969 John S. Battle High School Bristol Va Volume X L.v Sunset and evening star. And one clear call for me! And may there be no moaning of the bar. When I put out to sea. But such a tide as moving seems asleep Too full for sound and foam. When that which drew from out the boundless deep Turns home again. Twilight and evening bell. And after that the dark! And may there be no sadness of farewell When I embark: For though from out our bourse of Time and Place The flood may bear me far, 1 hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar. Alfred Lord Tennyson Foreword Lest we forget the most important thing, everywhere, without wishing to . . . we viewed . . . faces . . ., reflecting the passing scene . . . and heard . . . sounds born in accomplishment and touched . . . things bringing knowledge . . . and sensed the whole . . . each one must contribute. Success comes ... in small ways, in large ways, sometimes from boredom, never without effort . . . knowledge is found in all places, a community, town, school, and through it all we grew . . . and came to write of our present measured in time and memories and always moving and active. Contents Classes Features 3 Saluting Dr. E. B. Stanley On the occasion of his completion of sixteen years as superintendent of schools in Washington County. During his regime ' in office, new secondary and elementary schools have been constructed and a kindergarten has been added to the school program. Progress has been made in salaries and benefits for all school personnel and the curriculum and facilities in all schools in the county is constantly being improved under the leadership of Dr. Stanley. The late President John F. Kennedy gave to the teaching profession the words that can be the challenge of the age: “From those of us to whom much is given, much is required, and when at some future date recorded history isits in judgment on each of us, our success or failure in whatever office we may hold will be measured by the answers to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage? Second, ' were we truly men of judgment? Third, were we tfufy men of integrity? And finally were we truly men of dedication?” Dr. Stanley ' s record in office will form the answers to these questions! mm V I I f NINETEEN SIXTY-NINE HE NINETEEN SIXT [TY-NINE NINETEEN SIXTY TYNINE NINETEEN 3IXTY-NINE NINETEE INETEEN SIXTY-NINE NINETEEN SIXTY STY-NINE NINETEEN SIXTY 1 -TINE NINETEEN SIXTY-NINE NIN NINETEEN SIXTY-I ETEEN SIXTY-NINE NINETEEN SIT FACULTY Mr. A.
