As a means of thanking Superintendent Carl Johnson for his hard work and unselfish devotion to our school, we wish to dedicate the Bengal of 1956 to him. When Mr. Johnson came to Battle Ground in 1939, the Battle Ground Schools were quite small. Since he has been here, they have more than doubled. Under Mr. Johnson s capable leadership many new buildings have been added to our campus. Some of them include the Central Elernentar School, Agriculture Building, Home Economics Building, athletic tyields and the new high school and music building, With the closing of this school year, Carl Johnson completes seventeen years of devoted service to the Battle Ground Schools. However, success is not measured by years, but by actual achieve- ment, and it is in this that we recognize the value of his untirmg activity. 4 N-::J9f ,. -Ot QRBH J. . The tone of their talk was largely one of despairg namel , that the international situation being what it was, held little promise for them or for the future. There has hardly been a time in his- tory when the world has not faced a crisis. It has been during 'periods of great -trial that nations and in ividuals have risen and achieved their greatest truimphs. Today our nation is making tremendous strides in science, industry, communi- cations, and in other areas that affect our daily lives. The school has attempted to equip you with the skills and knowledge necessary to join this great stream of human endeavor. The future has never looked brighter than now for those possessed with courage, initiative, and willingness to learn. Do not despair ------ Go forward! J. Lee Babcock if As commencement rolls around, you'll probabl hear many seniors talking over oi'd times. You'll be hearing us say things such as: Ray Belisle, sophomore President, helped a good year pass quickly with the Sophomore Brawl as the highlight. Nancy Stephens was our pretty Miss 1956. We ended our year with a pic- nic, showered with excessive use of water guns. We were so well-satisfied with Ray that we chose him to guide us through our our Junior year. The first big event was our play, Father Was a Housewife, a cute comedy. We had the largest turnout ever on Junior Dress-Up Day. We carried on our enthusiasm by having a highly successful Junior Prom. Sitting on the Seashell Throne were our Queen, Kathyrn Meisner, King, Ray Belisle and their court. We ended our year with another damp picnic. Jack Otterson presided over our senior year, which was packed with lots of excitement. First, we had our pictures taken. Then came the Senior Ball with the beautiful and most appropriate setting of Winter Wonderland. Of course, as loyal seniors we set to work ordering announcements, cards and measuring for caps and gowns. Our play, Room or One More, was terrific. Other exciting days we remember were the traditional Girls' Tea, Senior Assembly, Picnic and Baccalaureate. Then on graduation night as we receive our diplomas, we, the class of '56 , all sadly rea ize that many happy days are gone and it's time to say goodbye.
