As Commencement Day, May 26th, approached, the Seniors happily recalled the outstanding events of their three memorable years of high school. Under the leadership of Don Wendt as sophomores, they showed much enthusiasm. The Sophomore Brawl was a big success with Betty .Tohnson's election as Miss l955 highlighting the event. Showing the same enthusiasm the class of '55 started its junior year with the presentation of the play Captain Applejack, starring Mel Conner. Junior Dress-up Day was held on April l. Climaxing the year was the Junior Prom on May 1 with Wilma Brownell and Dean Mosier reigning as queen and king of the affair. Starting their final year, Seniors held a successful Senior Ball, Showers of Stars , on December 11. Then came the familiar pattern of ordering announcements and cards, class pictures, and the measuring for caps and gowns. March llth brought the annual Senior Play, Father of the Bride, a cute comedy. The Senior girls' tea was followed by the Senior assembly and picnic. May 26th found the Seniors at the long awaited moment, commencement, re- ceiving their diplomas. This was a sad but happy ending to the his- tory of the class of '55, I :Ss ilii p wif '27 ' ff - it 3 an-W WWE f ROBERT ALLWORTH--Bob collects stamps and states his suppressed desire as wanting to get along with Mr. Zeller. Iris Jystad and Merlyn Brothers were crowned queen and king of the Sophomore Brawl, which was held in the balcony of the high school gymnasium Saturday night, October 30. The corona- tion ceremony was carried out by Mr. Siegel. Attendance was good, considering the fact that many other Halloween activ- ities were going on the same night. In addition to the Brawl, the sopho- mores sponsored after-game dances. The concluding social event for the class was the annual picnic. Class Advisors were Mr. Larsen and Mr. Gunnarsen. Battle Ground's clawing Tigers really tore the pants off of some top teams over the season such as Astoria, Estacada, and Chehalis. The Tigers romped over Estacada, I4-O, to open the season, with Armstrong and Massie doing some fancy running to the goals to handle the scoring. Armstrong took off for a thirty-two yard jaunt in the second quarter andelvlassie tore out for twenty- five yards to pay-dirt in the third quarter. Next on the sheet was the game at Vancouver where the Trappers tripped the Tigers to a 45-0 defeat. Evergreen's Plainsmen came to Battle Ground on Octover I, and the Tigers opened the month with a 34-6 victory. Arm- Strong, Wendt, and Brothers made good runs to the cross-marks to do the scoring for Battle Ground. The most exciting time of the game was when Armstrong ran 73 yards for a touchdown. The Chehalis Bearcats paid a visit to the Tigers' den next to lose a good ball game, 9-7. Edwards and Armstrong did the scoring for Battle Ground. Edwards made, a touch back in the first quarter and Armstrong pushed over to pay-dirt in the fourth quarter. Due to a lack of spirit and a particle of superiority on the Camas team, Battle Ground met her second defeat of the season at the Papermaker's press, 47-6, Battle Ground's eleven met a predictably superior St. Martin's team next to win 26-O. Brothers, Armstrong, and 'Babcock placed the consecutive TD's in the first, third, and fourth quarters to control the Tiger scoring. The Tigers traveled to Astoria to give the Fishermen a 20-7 defeat in a nearly all passing game. Armstrong took around his left end three times in the second half to tally up the score for Battle Ground. Battle Ground's Tigers traveled away to Kelso to meet the Highlanders in the final game of the season .and to lose 34-14. Fey and Cresap carried the pigskin in the first and fourth quarters to do the scoring for Battle Ground. Compliments of BATTLE GROUND LUMBER COMPANY ,f N , A' .X X' . The 1954Il111i0I Varsity football team had a successful season. Out of six games, the Iayvees, under the coaching of Rufus Winters, won four. They lost their first game of the season to Vancouver I2-6. In their second clash with the Trappers the IV's came through with a 20-6 victory. They went on to win 57-0 over Washougal, but were momentarily stopped when they were beaten I2-0 by Kelso. The IV's came back to win the'rest of their games by scores of 34-0 over Evergreen, and a 24-21 victory over Camas. One of the outstanding players this season was Les Fey, who filled the halfback spot and whose outstanding running and pass receiving this year did a great deal to lead the IV 's to victory, Also outstanding were Loren Remey, who really caught on to the ball at center and was a great defensive endg Jim Malinowski, who took over end position: Vierck, one of our sophomores, who handled guard position wellg and Lyle Overton, who was a great tackle. Slorey was the fellow who let fly some good passes this year. The team will be supplying reserve strength for Varsity next season and -is expected to have a season just as successful or more so next year. .fnfffl 1 , ' 1 'jim Wwe 8 . fjvj-' ff 111 x 't l I K is J 5 Sponsored by ' XXI? The basketball squad will really feel the gap to be left by the outgoing seniors, although the school can look forward to some good team members coming up from the Junior Varsity. Don Wendt and Lee Frazier will leave their guard positions while three holes in the forward spots will be left by Cliff Massie, Ralph Lillie, and John Mosier. Don Wendt received the captain honors for the season while Leroy Frazier was voted the Inspirational Player Award by the team. In the Camas, Kelso, and Evergreen games, Massie, Mosier, and Lillie helped a great deal in scoring. The Tigers scored 645 points to their opposition's 593 in the League's playing record.
