Future readers should know that educational institutions ot today have recognized the anxiety of the times and have attempted to prepare their students to meet the challenges ot a trying period. We believe Battle Ground High School has been such a place, Whatever progress We have made can be attributed to the tact that We have learned in some measure the secrets ot co-operation. We hope that this knowledge will impart greater strength to us as individuals in the ditticult years ahead. Harold Dick, Principal Battle Ground High School A. A. Hassler A. C. We are living in a very trying and unnerving period of national tension, due to no fault of our own. Because of this situation, We are inclined to live from day to day With little thought of the future. Our school with its activities and studies has been a guiding influence helping us to think and plan for the future. For the results of this year and the accomplishments attained, l have only to say that each outgoing set of officers believes that its year Was the best in Battle Ground history .... VM I OOKING forward to its senior year and all its privileges and backward over its junior year and all its individual and group successes, the class of '52 can long remember its junior year with pride. Heading the list ot successes is the class play, Glamour Boy, which on December l was presented to a near-capacity audience. junior Dress-Up Day proved very popular and the junior Prom with its traditional royal court and South- ern Eantasyu theme, which was held in April, added to the now-lengthy list ot successes. The juniors also chose next year's photographer and class rings and pins. They decorated the auditorium and ushered for commencement. Helping make the year such a notable one were Dick Ramey, president, Dick Decker, vice-president, Arlene Cooper, secretary, Evelyn Neiger, treasurer, and Dick Malinowski, sergeant-at-arms. With Mr. Wescom as advisor the boys sponsored the annual homecoming parade and intramural bas- ketball. They purchased uniforms for the players in Do-Nut League. This year's league play was divided into two sections, one round before Christmas and one after. Both proved very popular. During the year the boys were host to interesting and memorable speakers from the armed services. Officers for the year were: Gerald Ellis, president, Narvin Snyder, vice-presidentg Dave johnson, secretaryg Glen Bergren, treasurer, and Fred Brosseau, sergeant-at-arms. GIRL'S LEAGUE Plenty of good organization has characterized every enter- prise of the club, with its officers, janet Erkkila as president, Elizabeth Ritzau, vice-presidentg Ioyce Swanson, secretaryg Ruth Wisti, treasurer, Dorothy Rogers, social chairman, and Regene Bartlett and Marlene Shinn, song leaders. l A major project of the League since the last war is the help give-n to a German family. We have sent them food and as many other things as we were able. A Mother-Daughter Banquet was held in honor of mothers on April 12. Also an overnight camping trip was planned. A jean day for girls who cared to wear jeans was held in connection with this camping trip. To finance such things as these, dances and evening movies were sponsored. Evening cabinet meetings were held to discuss further enter- prises. Often a marshmallow roast would end a perfect evening. , w,w,,, wmwmw, ' 1 .W M' 5 Q Fw I ' FUTURE FARMERS ' FUTU One of the most active organizations at Battle Ground and one of which Battle Ground can be proud is the FF A. Their achievements this year have been numerous and their con- tributions to Battle Grounds reputation are of no small con- sequence. Twenty-five per cent of the boys in the chapter entered projects in the fair. The cattle-judging teams had a very successful year as did the poultry-judging teams. Luveme Ritter represented Battle Ground at the National FFA Con- vention and Gene Burris was one of two boys chosen to represent Washington in the National FFA Band. During National Education Week the boys had a display at the bank and during National FFA Week they had a dis- play at the feed mill. Also in connection with National FFA Week, Ron Salt, Ted Martin, Bill Uelschi, Frank Williams, and Bob McKinnis appeared on a radio program on KPOI. The parliamentary procedure team placed first in tl'ie,sub- district and district and Won the right to compete in th j e meet at Pullman where they won second place. At the k h ' th- West Washington Field Day the boys won all three ewfents. They held their annual FFA Banquet on March 1, combined efforts with the FHA for a Cow-Barn Shuffle, held a ping- pong tournament, a combination FFA-FHA picnic and a figi- ing trip at the end of the year. Taking the bows as the year's proud officers are: Ron Salt, president, Luverne Bitter, vice-president, Gene Burris, secre- tary, Ted Martin, treasurer. Bob McKinnis, reporter, and Glen Works, sentinel. The boys are advised by Mr. Olmstead, Mr. Caines, Mr. Damewood, and Mr. Schaefer. .qw nt: I-IQMEMAKERS This year, as in no other year, the Futigigrblomemakers of America of Battle Ground was one of thegifl 'prominent and active organizations in the school. This i ' trgely due to the officers, who are: Barbara Brosseau, president, Patty Carlson, vice-president, Shirley Iohnson, secretary, Gladys Hill, treas- urer, Marilyn Sonsteby, social chairman, Vivian Quast, his- torian, and Velda Werner, reporter. Their adviser is Mrs. Englmann. The groups began activities in the fall with a booth at the fair. They prepared and served the food for the FFA Banquet. A Cow-Barn Shuffle was the outcome of the combined efforts of the FFA and the FHA. They hope to make it an annual affair. More than four delegates were sent to the state conference at Bellingham where Marilyn Sonsteby Was elected as regional chairman. The Battle Ground FHA was the largest club attending the district and the state meets. A A , ,. , -M , ' 4 x UQ N' 4? ni! 1 , , sf' 1- W 32 .5 fgf Q ,M W , M wx 1? M 'aff , ff fr , +5 2. M. About 5300 was taken in from the sale of advertisements, and the staff earned approximately 2548 selling news to other publications. ln addition to working on the paper, the staff made a trip to the Columbian Building to study some of the problems connected with publishing a daily news- paper, and also visited the office of the Mid-County Reflector, where they watch- z V. The UB Club, this year boasting a membership ot 35, proved to be a very busy organization in the 1959-Sl term. During basketball season, they lurnished enthusi- astic fans with cold pop which helped to quench the fans' thirst after eating the Tigerettes' popcorn. A booth was again sponsored at the Sophomore Brawl and, as usual, proved a success. For a change the boys decided to put the initiates to work rather than hold the usual initiation. The B Club members have been active in both sports and social life. Officers of the B Club this year were, George Bump, president, Gerald Ellis, secretaryftreasurer, Vernon Shope, sergeant-at-arms. The Tigerettes, now an eight-year-old organization, has played an active part in the years of '50 and '51, During the course of the year, a popcorn machine was purchased by them and donated for the benefit of the student body, They have sponsored many successful dances, and have had charge ot selling refreshments at all home games. During the half at the Camas game, Ianuary 19, as an extra feature the Tigerettes played a very convincing mock basketball tussle, with the score ending in a tie, 99 to 99 twith the help of the score board attendants, of coursel. So, you see, along with being resourceful they've had fun, too, The executive committee was formed of the president, Audrey Iohnsong vice-president, Nira Kirk, secretary- treasurer, Ieanne Overby, activities chairman, Lois Ann Koslcig the advisors, Miss Ardith Rogers and Miss Pauline Girod. Five of these wins were against Oregon teams. This bet- ters the record of the l949 team which had five wins with three losses. Fifteen lettermen were out for varsity ball as the season started but injuries in practice took two mem- bers off the team before the first game was played. They were Ierry McGee, letterman tackle, and Iimmy Edwards, fullback. The Tigers showed growing strength as they won their first game over The Dalles l2-0. LeRoy Moore proved his ability to run that night as he repeatedly circled the ends for large gains. Scappoose fell next under the Bengal winning streak by a 20-6 defeat. Moore again took to the air and scored three of his four touchdowns for the sea- son on that night. One of these was a 70-yard run. Ron Salt sparked the lineup as he did throughout the entire season. On one attempt he broke through the right side of the line and fought his way 35 yards for a score that was called back. The next game was with Columbia Prep of Port- land. During this game Vernon Shope, a 270-pound tackle, scored a touchdown for the home team when he recovered a fumble that was made after the ball was carried across the line. Also during this game Lewis Marler received a broken leg and was lost to the lineup for the season. At the Homecoming game undefeated Battle Ground met the undefeated Kelso team to receive its first setback of the season. The absence of several regulars along with numerous injuries proved too much of an obstacle for the Tigers to overcome and they lost 37-0. Recovering from its first defeat, the team bounced back into the win column by beating Tigard, Oregon. During this game Ed Burk was responsible for the only Battle Ground safety made this year. Bob McKinnis received a pass from quarterback, Bill Salt, late in the first quarter that resulted in the only touchdown pass made throughout the season. White Salmon's defeat on November 3 increased the Tigers record to five wins and one loss. Dick Ramey, taking the place of LeRoy Moore, who was out with an injured hand, made his first touchdown in varsity ball. Dick Malinowski played an outstand- ing game of football that resulted in his pushing across for six points. Camas took advantage of five B. G. fumbles to win l9-0 on its home turf when the Tigers visited there November l0. During the first quarter the visitors succeeded in holding their ground but were on the short end of a 6-0 score at halftime. A team from Lincoln High School was the opponent when B. G. closed its 1950 season on November l7. This was the only game played on a muddy field. Up to this time the weather for football had been excep- tionally good. The basketball team showed signs of having a good season as it won three of its four pre-season games from Washougal, Chehalis, and Tillamook. The loss was to Cleveland of Portland. The first two league games with Kelso and Camas were also easily taken. Battle Ground had progressed to a tie for first place with Vancouver before it lost to that school in a close, hard-fought contest. The Tiger starting five was an equal match for the Vancouver quintet, but were hampered the second half by the lack of experienced bench strength. Vancouver was the team from the Clark Cowlitz League that were eligible for the state tournament. Battle Ground's most disheartening loss was given by the Kelso Highlanders the second time our team traveled there. This game was also close all the way and the Tigers had a Z9-Z8 edge as the fourth period ended. Tom Gunnari, a Highlander spark plug, was fouled as he was attempting to shoot when the final whistle blew. He made his two baskets and sent Battle Ground home the loser, Z9-30. Narvin Snyder was named as the most inspirational player on the team and Ron Salt was nominated as the honorary captain of the season. Next year Coach Pettichord can look for- ward to an even more experienced squad. During the last quarter of the schedule, this year's varsity squad depended largely upon sophomore and junior strength. Although they had little experience in high school ball, Iack Massie, Ray Cresap, Bill Salt, and Sid Parker learned fast enough to see much var- sity playing. The seniors who played their last high school basketball game for Battle Ground were Narvin Snyder, Ron Salt, Luverne Ritter, and Gene Burris. S C O R E S Team Played Dale B.G.
