Page 33 Prophecy of The Class of 1965 I emerged into the blinding light after my twenty-fifth year of imprisonment. Perhaps I should explain myself, for I, a graduate of Battle Ground in the infamous year of 1965, am a criminal. For twenty-five years I had been chained to a filtration pump in the ruins of the still un- finished swimming pool at B.G.A. My crime? A furious one indeed: During the spring of my senior year, twenty- five years ago, I intimated within earshot of a faculty mem- ber, a Mr. Patterson (alias “The Iron Fist”), that I did not plan to attend college. At midnight the next night I was awakened by a loud knock on the door and. That doesn’t matter now. To go on with my story, I was rescued when a passer-by heard my cries for help. I had sustained myself for all those years on the hundreds of cases of peanut butter (vintage 1950) stored under the gymnasium. As I stumbled from my cavernous vault and was taken to the plush, carpeted dining hall for my first real meal in years. I found a banquet in progress—a re- union banquet, my own class of ’65. There they were, all of them: here was a successful man, there a has-been, over there a never-was. J stumbld into a group of distinguished gentlemen and tanglement of my three-foot beard introduced myself. As through the en- my vision cleared I saw that they were Tommy “Lay—’em Away” Lawrence (the world’s most successful mortician) , Bear Robertson, (president of American, Reynolds, and Lorrillard Tobacco Companies), Dan Martin, Louisville, Kentucky) , and George Elder (the operator of a somewhat notorious lemonade and cookies establishment on Bourbon Street.) As I wandered aimlessly I saw Chug Morton, Sam “Bubble-top” Mick McCoy whose coveralls proclaimed them to be members of the Rambler Racing Team. ‘Talking with them were John Robbins, Jimmy Sewell and Stefan Smith, members of the Vienna Boys Choir. They told me that Rascoe Rhea, Joe Henry, and Eddie Blackman were unable to attend since the town of Pulaski had seceded from the universe. (owner of Buchanan, and Resplendent in purple and gold dinner jackets were Steve Barnes and Mike Ross, co-owners of the World Champion Dixie Flyers. With them were Jack Dryden, a burly de- fenseman, and Gid Wade, who drives the ice-cleaning ma- chine between periods. Beside them Joe Holliday and John Paine, famous hair sylists, were hashing over old times with Allen Tanksley, now owner of Franklin’s most infamous billiard ball, and his cohorts “Cue Ball” Gotwald and “Min- nesota Fats’ More, the best rackers in the business. ‘They were discussing the latest feats of alligator wrestling with Don Dickinson, a performer in Hayes Perry’s Traveling I learned that others of the old guard had turned Mike Everhart performing are seen every night on Circus. to show business. and his gorilla (Jim Smith) Stephen Plonka had recently been chosen to play Tarzan The ‘Tweatles, a combo Boardway. in a revival of the movie series. made up of “Hot Licks” Adair, “Adonis” Brown, “Hairy” Houghland, and ‘Heartbreaker’ Hart, had to be smuggled to Franklin to avoid the hordes of shrieking teenage girls who follow them constantly. ‘Their manager, Eddy Wood- ard, was left in their limousine counting. their money. Wearing Madras swim trunks and carrying their trusty surfboards were Doug Johnson, Roger Jackson, and Paul Clements, surf bums from Honolulu. They had flown on Mike Pearson’s American Airlines courtesy of Fred Horrell, Page 34 Hawaiian resort hotel magnate. They told me of the good fortune of Sutton O’Neal, Tom Robinson, and his brother Gig, who, after long years as Alabama sharecroppers, had struck it rich in the Hazel Green Gin Company (which, incidentally has nothing to do with cotton.) I also heard from them that another Alabamian, Bill Abernathy, had made a fortune importing tropical birds. It seems that the old Class of °65 had made its contribu- tion to education too for I learned that Steve Head was now a professor at M.I.T. (Massey Institute of ‘Technology) . Coach John ‘Tompkins of Mud-State College was shaping up his basketball team (starring aging veteran George Leonard) for the final game of the N.I.L. in Henderson Square Gardens (located on the former site of Tom Hender- Park McMillan Dean of Women at the University of Tennessee and was receiving help from experts on the subject—Alex “Lover Boy’? As the meeting (or comic monologue, I forget which) was adjourned, Joe Crockett and Cliff Parmer (graduates of M.I.T. and Rice, respectively) began very methodically and scientifically to clear the table and sweep the room. The merrymakers passed hurriedly from the room and I found myself alone to ponder the acclaim, fortune, and high positions which had come to my former classmates against my lot in life. It was there that I made my irrevocable decision. Armed with thirty cases of saltine crackers (for, indeed, what good is peanut butter without crackers?) I took my rightful place in society—in the little nook beside the filtration pump in the ruins of the still swimming pool at Battle Ground Academy—Home Sweet unfinished Home. The 1964 Wildcat football team was undoubtedly one of the finest in recent years, not only for their season record and Rebel Bowl championship, but for the deter- mined, hard-hitting brand of foot- ball they played. After accepting the Rebel Bowl bid, Chattanooga East Ridge and Springfield took their toll on B.G.A. by winning two hard fought games. The offense was ably directed by quarterbi ick Jimmy ‘Thompson. Providing the scoring punch were captain Bert Brown, Frank Blackw ell, George Silvey, Bobby Patterson, George Elder, Chug Mor- ton, and Tony Trabue. Randy Rudolph and David Whalley were both outstanding in the re- turn of kickoff’s and punts. The line, which was equally adept on offense and defense, was outstanding. Among the linemen who gave so much to this team were: co-captain Roger Jackson, Mike Pearson, Eddy Woodard, David Kefauver, Jim Short, Don Denbo, Buddy Calvin, Leonard Mc- Gugin, Mark Rogers, Bobby Jack- son, Harry Ford, Lee Truitt, Logan Jackson, and Ken Tarkington. De- fensive specialists Vaughn Woods and Ralph McCracken did an ad- mirable Job in backing up the line for the “Tusk Hogs.” This spirited group has given many proud moments to the ; school’s football heritage. From | the most beautifully executed pass | play to the hardest block and the most jolting tackle, this group has given lasting memories. Blessed with spirit, leadership, and real | love for the game, this team exem- plified the finest Battle Ground tradition. In Memoriam There is nothing so tragic as the untimely death of a fine young man. Lloyd Daugherty, a senior in the Class of 1964, was called just as the p rime of his life was beginning. However, the short life of this fine Christian boy bespeaks a dedication and accomplishment which few ever achieve. The life of our friend Lloyd Daughterty will always give us a sterling example to fol- low. His contribution to Battle Ground shall never be forgotten. Page 83 . 13 Page 84 In Memoriam A comradeship and brotherly closeness has been a perennial hallmark of the Battle Ground student body. ‘The loss of one young man creates an unfillable void. Such is the case with Johnny Slayden. It is not for us to understand the reason for this loss, but we have the assurance that he still lives. His genuine friendliness and enthusiasm will serve both as fond remembrance and in- delible inspiration for us, his friends. ‘| Senor Superlatives re «= Sutton O'Neal + Plonks | rr t” wO— Ae Best Natured y BOUTS 2 Dan Martin Most Studious Mike Ross ; - __ _ 8 tated rena Most Generous _ _ a igges ocial Lion Stephen Head Biggest Goldbrick — | Bert Brown « Most Bashful Senior On perl atives = nesenseese remninnectin Dan Martin Best Dressed Best Looking Roger Scion Most Popular Most Athletic Jim Short Most In Love %: Play tor 5 A Studying for exams!
