l?ll'.QJ!-EEDJIPS Sophomore Mindee Dausel became the third student in Battle Creek school history to win the state American Legion Auxiliary's Americanism essay contest. Senior Brenda Van Houten won the Quint-County Reading Council award for her story Eternal Friends. Tammy Watson, a junior, receiv- ed second place honors in the lowa Homecoming '86 essay contest. Tammy received an award from Governor Terry Branstad. English instructor is Mrs, Joan Hummel. H Art student Lisa Weber, a junior, won the Sixth District's Congressional Art Competi- tion sponsored by Representative Berkley Bedell. Lisa's pencil drawing of a cat was judged best from the Sixth District, will be framed and hung in the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., along with other winners from the nation. Lisa's art teacher is Miss Laurie Olk. Battle Creek's first science fair was held May 17, 1986. Science teacher Mr. Doug Wheeler announced winners in three categories. Christine Hickie won first place and Becky Spragg, second place in the Biological Life Science category. Therese Lansink won first place and Mindee Dausel, second place in the Physical!Chemical category. Pam Hein won first place and Christi Petersen, second place in the General Category. Winners received trophies and cash awards, and all exhibits were displayed during the fair. lndividual speech students received eleven Division l ratings and five Division ll ratings at District Contest held at Storm Lake High School. They received four I ratings and seven Il ratings at State competition held at Buena Vista College.
