Among these courses are Mass Media, Individualized Reading, and journalism. They are specifi- cally designed to develop the communication skills of the stu- dent-both oral and written. With these objectives in mind the English faculty conducts studies in American literature and in the literature of other cul- tures, allowing the student to be- come familiar with a way of life different from his own. Biblical Literature, Shakespeare, British Literature, and Philosophy are examples of courses intended to widen the understanding and ap- preciation of these segments of our literary culture. Certain courses are also desig- nated to work with the basics of the English language. In such courses as College Writing, time is devoted to developing the writing skills of the student. ln all of the courses, the every- day English language skills are increased in order to prepare the student to function at an ade- quate level with language, re- gardless of the choice of work-technical or professional. Open discussions develop the student's communication skills in journalism class. Study outside of the classroom is encou- raged by Individualized Reading. I9
