Many long hours of hard work went into making the play the success that it was. Junior Linda Kerner (Mollie Michaelson) did a superb job in her first role, portraying the experi- ences of a freshman at college. Mollie ' s parents (Steve Blanchard and Diana Kay), did a fine job in typifying the trials and tribulations of the parents of a first year college girl. The entire cast did a beautiful job of supporting the leads and deserve special recognition for their fine acting. Thanks to the excellent leadership of Mr. Kenneth Peck, Central ' s dramatics teacher, Central had anoth- er memorable play. When her first big college date turns out to be an intellectual snob, Mollie is certain that this date will be her last. Guard Club Gives Central The Upmost In Service A newly organized club at Central this year is the Battle Creek Guard Club. Under the direction of Mr. Paul Vogel and Mr. Brian Nagle, Guard members are involved in many various activities. Chiefly concerned with their Learn to Swim program, Guard Club members taught swimming to a large number of youngsters for five weeks last summer. During the school year. Guard membres may be found at the Fieldhouse pool every Saturday morning teaching various grades of swimming ranging from be- ginners to advanced. The teaching is planned for each instructor to have three students so that each student may receive a great deal of individual attention. Beside their teaching duties, Guard Club members help officiate at Central ' s home swimming meets as well as the junior high school championship meets. Guards also have an opportunity to earn some extra money by life- guarding after school and eve- nings at area pools. Members of the Guard Club are rewarded well for their services by the many so- cial activities planned through- out the year. The agenda this year included a Christmas par- ty, a Lake Michigan outing, a bowling party, and a ski trip. In addition, the Guard mem- bers constructed a prize-win- ning Homecoming float. The sports offered are on both the intramural and varsity levels. In the intramural programs girls of all skill levels meet once or twice a week to play. The activities offered are Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Bowling, Softball, and Volleyball. The varsity program provides an opportunity for girls to improve their skills through supervised training, and to be selected to represent Battle Creek on competitive teams which compete against teams from other schools. For those girls who enjoy working with younger children or participating in supervisory posi- tions, the G.A.A. trains and provides officials and assistants for the elementai-y after school athletic programs and also selects girls to manage its own sports programs. The members of the G.A.A. elect girls from each grade level to serve as their Board of Direc- tors. The board members determine the activities the organization will offer each year, sets the poli- cies governing the organization, and keeps track of the credits all members earn so as to determine who is eligible for awards. Displaying a potent offense and a crushing defense, the J. V. ' s garnered their fourth win in as many games. Lansing Eastern was defeated in a driving rainstoi-m, 19-6. Battle Creek showed good poise under adverse weather conditions at many points during the encounter, the sign of a good team. East Lansing was the next opponent of the Bearcats. On Trojan Field in East Lansing, the offense sputtered and the defense slipped as Battle Creek fell, 29-14. The J. V. ' s showed they were winners, however, with a 52-0 thrashing of Lansing Everett. Bouncing back from their loss the previous week, nothing went wrong for Battle Creek as they finished their season on a win- ning note. Even though one streak was broken this year, another was continued for next year ' s team to add to. Since 1961, no J. V. team at Battle Creek Central has lost a game at C. W. Post Field, certainly a remarkable record. This year ' s team added four more victories to this record. TT TT sfej ' Slii. 1956 Junior Varsity 67 : n iM .  W? ? Season Clinched After Nine Victorious Games The 1966 Bearcat team again went undefeated and untied for the second year in a row. The Bearcats now have a twenty game winning streak which is one of the best in the state of iMichigan. This year they scored 278 points while holding their opponents to 43 points. The Bearcats won the 6-A title and re- ceived the number one rating on all the football polls. This is the first state cham- pionship football team in the history of Central. Tom Beard, Paul English, Andy Johnson, Fred Kitchen, and Orville Sherrod represented the Bearcats on the all 6-A team. Both English and Johnson are juniors. The seniors on this year ' s team did not lose or tie a game while at Central. Brian GiflPord, captain, and Fred Kitchen and Pat McCann, co-captains, Tom Beard, Orville Slierrod, Paul English, Doug Brown, and Andy Johnson received state wide recog- nition from coaches and sportswriters after the season. Probably the biggest game of the season was played at Ann Arbor. Nearly ten thousand people jammed into the stadium to watch the number one and number two teams in the state battle it out. The Bearcats showed why they were rated number one when they defeated the Pioneers 26 to 13. Coach Jack Finn said that in this game fourteen differ- ent players made key plays which gave the Bearcats the victory. After a slow start against Kalamazoo the Bearcats bounced back in the second half to over- whelm their opponents 34 to 17. The 21 to 7 victory over Lakeview assured the Bearcats of their first state crown. The team was honored with a city wide banquet in December at which nearly 400 attended. Assis- tant Coach Tom Carlisle from Michigan State along with Mr. Gene Washington and Mr. Bob Apisa were guest speakers. 69 Mutt and Jeff TEAM HONORED — MAYOR ' S PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, The Battle Creek Central High School football team has completed its second consecutive unde- feated season, winning 20 consecutive games ; and WHEREAS, the Bearcats of 1966 have unanimously won their first Class A, Clear and Undisputed football championship with a perfect 9-0 record ; and WHEREAS, their achievement is all the more signifi- cant and remarkable since it was made against outstand- ing strongly competitive, first-ranked teams in one of the toughest class A leagues in the country; and WHEREAS, the Bearcats championship has brought honor, distinction and wide and popular acclaim to our city; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that this City Commission, on behalf of the people of Battle Creek, does hereby honor and salute Captain Brian Gifford, co-captains Fred Kitchen and Pat McCann ; their valiant and talented teammates ; their student managers ; their trainers ; their staunch, loyal and enthusiastic student supporters and their great, dedicated and distinguished coach. A senior, whether he is a starter or a substitute, sets the mental attitude for the whole team. If he is dedicated, sincere, and loyal, the under- classmen on the team will follow his example. This year, seniors not only contributed to the team mentally, but also with fine physical abilities. During the season, the following seniors showed enough football ability that they have been interviewed by college football coaches for scholar- ships at their school: Tim Ball, Tom Beard, Bob Boyd, Doug Brown, Brian Giiford, Fred Kitchen, Pat McCann, Anthony McGee, Orville Sherrod. Although the credit for this fine season has to go the whole football team, special recognition should go to the fine group of seniors on this team. At the awards banquet, Greg Weeder was presented with two trophies, one for being on the varsity for three years the other for being the best competitor. Their record of thirteen wins and two losses in regular season play, and fourteen and three overall, brought their two year record to twenty-eight wins and six losses, one of the greatest ever established over a two year period. Commenting on the season, Coach RifFey said, Even though we are very disappointed in losing the Tournaments, we still are very proud of the accomplishments of this year ' s team. For me this has been the most rewarding season since I began coaching fifteen years ago. I really didn ' t think we would have much of a team when the season started because we lost all of our starters from last year ' s team. Yet, these young men worked very hard and improved as the season went along. We have labored long and hard to bring good basketball to our community, and I feel that the records over the y ' - P ° years have proved that we have arrived as a basketball V v P ' : power. ' Mr. Riffey again did an outstanding job in putting together another successful season. During the season he received an honor of being selected to Indiana ' s Basketball Hall of Fame, and is most deserving of the award. He has a great sense of humor and a desire to work hard for something important — no doubt some of this desire had a tremendous effect on the members of this vear ' s team. This record does not at all tell how strong the little Bear- cats were. Because of the long season, many of the boys received a lot of valuable expe- rience for next year ' s varsity. Even in defeat the little Bearcats possessed something that all Bearcat teams pos- sess: hustle, desire to win, and a great deal of poise, and sportsmanship. It was a long season for the team as well as for the coach, Mr. Jack Schils, as this was only his second losing season in coaching basketball. Mr. Schils did another outstanding job as head J. National Honor Society Commends Top Ranking Seniors Each year, the top ranking fifteen per cent of the members of the graduating senior class are elected to the National Honor So- ciety. This award is the highest scholastic honor that can be achieved by a student at Battle Creek Central High. Eligibility is based on the average of semester grades from the ninth grade through the first semester of the twelfth grade. Much dignity accompanies this honor. As well as high scholastic rating, the members of the National Honor Society are chosen for their quality of character and leadership abilities. 156 JUNIOR OFFICERS WORK DILIGENTLY 158 The Junior Class made a successful campaign urging juniors to pay their class dues and support Central ' s Class of ' 68. The funds collected helped pay for all the junior activities, including a Victory Float built for the Homecoming celebrations. The Junior Prom, alias Voodoo Nocturne, was staged on April 22 at Northwestern Junior High and featured The Relics. A Junior-Senior Reception, sponsored by the juniors in honor of the graduating seniors rounded out the Junior Activity Sheet for 1967-68. Junior class officers for the year ' 66- ' 67 were Terry Nihart, president; Mary Ellen Iden, vice-president; Diana Britton, treasurer; Karn Hemry, secre- tary. Mrs. Arlene White and Mr. Rich- ard Blett were the class advisers. 159 Gail Absher lorry Adams Mike Adams Alice Adtotk Leon AHofd John Allen Lindo Allen Nancy Allen Scherry Allgood Ron Anderson Sandra Andrews Joy Ansley Stella Arredondo Larcy Asher Linda Ashley Dave Alton Jennifer Babe LueAnn Baba Cindy Babbit Lloyd Bailey Hetbert Bake Tim Boker Dave Bakken Kelly Ball Frances Banks W. Thus far, the sophomores have contributed much to carry on the Bearcat tradition of excellence for wliich Central is renowned. The class of ' 69 started off the year explosively with a car wash to build up the class treasury followed by the con- struction of a Homecoming float. Dur- ing the winter months, class dues were collected and a spring dance was planned. The success of the sophomore class can be attributed, in part, to the able leadership of the class officers, consist- ing of Pete Zeithammel, president; Sandi Finn, vice-president ; Jo Ellyn Oglesby, secretary; Jane Irwin, treas- urer, and their counselors, ] Irs.
