Mechanical Drawing JANICE ANDERSON Secretary, High School Office BEVERLY BONNEY Secretary to Principal MILDRED DeBOER Registrar ARLENE GREEN Assistant Librarian and Eladlq mu Jim, .aww and germ, jmck As head of the English department at Central, Miss Mertace Canon has been an inspiration to her students and has instilled in them some of her love of fine literature and drama. During her thirty-six years of teaching, she has participated in many faculty productions and she has been an enthusiastic supporter of all school activities. She is devoted to her family and plans to spend part of her time visiting her brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews. Mr. Henry W. Baker has been teaching chemistry at Central since l9l8. Before he came to Battle Creek he was superintendent of schools in Tekonsha, and then principal of the high school in Marshall. He has developed a great- er interest and appreciation of science in many of his students, who because of his teaching have entered this field of unlimited opportunity. His main interest outside of school is the Exchange Club, where he has been secretory since l935, and where he is now serving as state secretary. He plans to devote much of his future time to this worthwhile organization. A man of deep understanding and friendly humor, Mr. Cornelius VanAndeI has guided many students toward happier lives and more successful futures. Born in Holland, he came to the United States as a young boy, and when the First World War came, he took part in it. His avocation being carpentry, he built his own house and also a house which he plans to rent. Mr. Harlan Colburn is leaving Central after giving thirty-six years of service to the Battle Creek School System. He has taught both woodshop and mechanical drawing classes, and during the Second World War conducted classes in blueprint reading as his contribution to the war effort. His hobby is collecting coins and stamps and he plans to spend much more time on this in the future. 22 4 ? y 14 4 'L o Q 5 ta s f.v, V: .,,:-. A N Mk --U --KN l JW' ,s if qolf' W? , A ,W fi . Among these were the commencement for practi- cal nurses held at Southwestern Junior High School, the Armistice Day assembly with the high school choirs, the Thanksgiving assembly with the A Cappella Choir, the spring concert, assemblies for all the junior high schools, P. T. S. A. achieve- ment night, and the all-city orchestra festival. They did a fine job and deserve a vote of com- mendation. This year at the state solo and ensemble con- test, which was held in Ann Arbor, Central was proud to have two first division winners. Taking a first for her violin solo was Linda Newkirk, accom- panied at the piano by Douglas Woodard. ln the ensemble class, a saxophone quartet, consisting of Bob DeRees, Ed Joplin, Bruce Kulp, and Walter Woods, brought home the honors. Once a week they had music appreciation programs. The Mixed Chorus sang in the Armistice Day assembly, the Thanksgiving assembly, and the All-City Vocal Festival. The Girls' Glee Club sang in the Christmas concert and the Spring Music Festival. Both groups, under the direction of Mr. Alfred Richards, are to be com- mended for the fine programs they presented. Activities of the group included several concerts for both the public and the student body, and the annual Christmas broad- cast from the lobby of the Security Bank. Drive and enthusiasm were supplied by the offi- cers who realize that it takes effort to make a suc- cess of anything. Membership is given only to those who pass the audition given by the director, Mr. Richards. No matter how good the material of which the choir is composed, it would be only mediocre except for the able leadership of Pop, as Mr. Richards is affectionately called by his students. After being out of school with a back injury for several weeks this year, Pop came back in April to continue the work he loves, that of directing the musical abilities of his students. SECOND ROW: T. This organiza- tion stimulates students to write, encouraging and rewarding individual achievement in the field. To be eligible for membership in this society, a student must be in the upper third of his class scholastically, be at least a junior, and have the recommendation of the local chapter adviser, Miss Burke. The names of the students nominated are then sent to the Executive Secretary of the International Office for final acceptance. A formal initiation ceremony was held in May for the new members and their parents. Making plans for this affair are Miss Burke, and second year members Natalie Ensign, Janie Owen and Ron Castell. Membership in the Quill and Scroll is something to be proud of, and thesc students put in many hours of work on the Key and Paean to attain this honor. The final and perhaps the greatest thrill comes, however, with the last publication of the newspaper and the distribution of the yearbooks. Pointing out an article of interest in the Michigan issue of the Key is first year member Larry Peters. The other first year senior initiates are Janet Russell, Bob Thayer, Judy Wals- worth, Sandy Ogden and Ann Morrison. The juniors wha were elected have their big year ahead of them and will begin this summer by making plans for both pub- lications. ln journalism they learned the fundamentals and acquired a working knowledge of how newspaper and yearbook staffs should operate. The junior issue of the Key was one of the big projects which they undertook, and making plans for this are lsittingl Jill Evans, Sue Deo, Janet Thomet, lstandingl Janet Hall and Dick Kirschman. Missing from the picture is Dee Rose. 88 f Afnffffo f,'17' f j f f , V' .W ,qZ5,4i,,,5' M, , , L 7?,,l,!,L , g . u H , , , . This year the Bearcat gridders, under Head Coach Ted Kjolhede, Coach Al Ratcliff, and Coach Burt Gustafson, turned in a record of six wins, against three losses. In total scoring, the Bearcats rolled up 206 points, compared with 80 for the opponents. This year there were many outstanding victories, the big wins over Roseville, Chicago Farragut, Hammond Tech, and Jackson, and the closer ones over Ypsilanti and Lansing Sexton. Although it was a loss, the Bearcats played one of their finest games against Ann Arbor, in an exceptionally hard fought battle. The Pioneers managed to win by one point after pushing over a desperation T. D. in the last five seconds of play. Chuck Long and Jim Graham both did outstanding jobs as co-captains. Bearcats on the All-City Team: Dave Baechler, Dave Brown, Joe Fullerton, and Chuck Long. SCHEDULE Battle Creek Opponents Battle Creek Opponents 72 . ....... .... R oseville O l2 ........ ..... This year, under Coach Bob Mowerson, the cross country team had a very improved season. Under some very stiff competition, the harriers finished fourth in the State Finals, third in the State Regionals, third in the 6A, and second in the Albion Invitational. The team improved greatly from last year, but they still have the problem of lack of student support. Co-captains Max Rust and Danny White did an excellent job in guiding the team this year. Before, the Bearcats were the doormat of the 6-A League, but in recent years they have risen to a position of great strength and, at present, pose a great threat in both the 6-A League and the State. This year the matmen had a very good season. The record shows six wins and three losses. All of the wins were taken by big margins, 4l-ll, 33-9, 43-2, 29-ll, and 45-5. The Bearcat losses were hard fought all the way and were decided by two or three matches. This year's co-captains, Dick Bordeaux and Dorrin Swift did a fine job in keeping the team spirit at a high level. This wrestling team can well be proud of its record. Big wins came against Jackson, who tied the Bearcats in the Cereal Bowl Relays, Lansing Eastern and the de- fending State Class B champions, East Grand Rapids. Scorewise, the biggest wins were against Grand Haven 170-l7l, Howe Military 168-9l, Lansing Sexton 159-283, and Kalamazoo 159-283. In seasonal 6-A meets, the Bearcats took four dual meets and dropped one, and in the 6-A meet the Battle Creek natators overcame some stiff competition to finish second. This year records dropped right and left. Some went so fast that they only stayed on the record books for a week. The 20-yard free-style relay, composed of Dave Diget, Jim Lee, Fred Rounds, and Bill Wright, smashed the school record in the Youth Building pool, and then went to Ann Arbor for the State Meet and broke their own record and the State record. Bill Wright equaled the 50-yard free-style school record, and Dave Diget rewrote the lOO- yard free-style school record. Dual Meet records broken were too numerous to mention. Co-captains Jim Lee and Bill Wright contributed greatly to the victories of the team, both by their swimming ability and their team spirit. The Girls' Athletic Association, which is a national organization, offers membership to any girl who enjoys sports and the companionship of other girls. The board, consisting of three sophomores, three juniors, and three seniors, in addition to the four officers, is elected in the spring. To be eligible to run for office a girl must first take out a petition and have it signed by a specified number of G.A.A. members. Any girl who has participated in at least one activity is qualified to vote in the election. G,A.A. is run on a point basis, with fifty points being given for bowling and twenty-five points for other sports. Three hundred points are required for a numeral, six hundred for a letter, and nine hundred for a gold pin. These acknowledgements of active participation are given to the girls at an awards assembly which takes place in May. During the year the girls play many round-robin tournaments among themselves and also attend several play- days. These playdays are conducted in a spirit of friendly competition and enable the girls to form new friendships with students in other schools. The advisers of G.A.A. this year were Miss Castelluccio and Miss McKellar. lll Hn J. H. C09 .Iaafzn Hand Spa m-E.. Officials' Club, which was organized in I949, is composed of girls who are interested in officiating at athletic events. The girls are required to pass a written examination in order to become members. They referee at junior high school playdays and at all G. A. A. games. Other duties include umpiring, scorekeeping, and timekeeping. THIRD ROW: Marilyn Conley, Glenda Carpenter, Mary Mohney, Leola Hilburn, Dorothy Coffman, Retta Chit- wood, and Jeannette Pultorak. SECOND ROW: Penny Pickens, Mitzi Rau, Miss Castelluccio, G. A. A. sponsor, Judy Wood, Janie Smith, and Brenda Edmonds. FIRST ROW: Nancy Skeels, Jackie Shay, Olene Jacobson, and Jill Wagner. The girls belonging to the splash club met two days weekly after school at the Youth Building. This activity was sponsored for those interested in swimming. The girls enjoyed participating in the sport. ln dry dock are Marrietta Lehman, Jill Wagner, Brenda Edmonds, Jackie Shay, Dorothy Coffman, Ruth Elmer, Mary Steele, Jo Adams, Jeannette Pultorak, and Retta Chitwood. Develop , Any girl who took an interest in, or who en- joys bowling, participated in this phase of G. A. A. The girls met every Wednesday night after school at the Michigan Recreation bowling alleys. Fifty points were given to each girl who attended a majority of the times. Picking out their bowling shoes from Jill Wagner and Mitzi Rau are Linda Hardy, Bon- nie Knapp, Barbara Blair, Janice Oberlin, and Marrietta Lehman. Keeping score is an art in itself, say the girls. Debating whether an X stands for a strike or a spare, and if three strikes in a row is a chicken or a turkey are Leola Hilburn, Jean- nette Pultorak, Jackie Shay, Jo Adams, Retta Chitwoad, Dorothy Coffman, Mary Mohney, Nancy Skeels, Penny Pickens, Olene Jacobson, Judy Wood, Mary Steele, Carol Hainline, Miss McKellar, Brenda Edmonds, Diana Hillman, and JoAnne Western. Most of the girls were veteran bowlers, and those who weren't, learned quickly. Com- petition was keen for the Tin Cup, which was given to the girl with the best average. Win- ning Et for the second year in a row with an average of lO8, was Glenda Carpenter. Watch- ing Glenda strike out on the tenth frame is JoAnn Western. dndJfauQ .rom gg Among the most popular of the girls' sports is basketball. Five teams are chosen among the girls who come out for the sport, and then a round-robin tournament is played. Referee Janie Smith calls for a jump ball between Judy Newman and Olene Jacobson. Waiting for the tip off are Bonnie Knapp, Mary Steele, Connie McFaII, Judy Wood, Joen Dun- ham, JoAnne Western, Barbara Conley, and Sandra Hadley. The girls realize the importance of learn- ing the fundamentals of the game before they actually begin playing. They become thorough- ly familiar with the rules, and the techniques of passing, dribbling, and shooting. Practicing free shots are Nancy Skeels, Brenda Edmonds, and Ruth Elmer. Picking up some pointers are Mary Jo Robinson, Beulah Daniel, Jackie Shay, Jill Wagner, Marvette Dan- iels, Ellen Thurman, and Marrietta Lehman. One of the new sports added to the list of G. A. A. activities this year was archery. The Robin Hoods, as they are called, found that much practice was needed to develop the per- fect co-ordination and timing required by the sport. Penny Pickens, Retta Chitwood, Marrietta Lehman, Nancy Skeels, and Mary Mohney look on as Dorothy Coffman, JoAnne Western, and Mitzi Rau prepare to shoot. ll4 Hood Jima! jnqnfluzlt This year volleyball was centered around practicing and learning the techniques of the game. Something new was added this year by way of a girls' 6-A conference. lt was held in Kala- mazoo and there was competition in softball, table tennis, volleyball, and swimming. The girls attended discussion groups in the afternoon to see how the G. A. A.'s in the other schools were organized. Learning the correct way to serve from Janie Smith before they attend the conference are Jo Adams, Nancy Skeels, Jeannette Pul- torak, Marilyn Conley, Ruth Elmer, and Beulah Daniel. Table tennis and badminton were two of the individual sports which the girls enjoyed this year. Though not widely participated in, the girls who did come out learned new skills and had good times together. Eager to play ball are Linda Hardy, Olene Jacobson, Judy Wood, Leola Hilburn, Judy New- man, Penny Pickens, Nancy Skeels, and Glenda Carpenter. But this was just the beginning. ln co-operation with the Student Council, the Commercial Club took pep promotion as its main project, and in connection with this, sponsored the Bearcat Roll Call. Sixteen hundred names were obtained and the roll call was then presented to Janet Buss, school pep promoter. Nancy Peterson, Pres., looks for advice to Mr. Glan- cy, club sponsor, Larry Peters, Veep, Wesley Robinson, ParI., Dee Rose, Sec'y, and Penny Pickens, Treas. Money-making was a big problem which the club faced, for the production of plays is expensive. However, the members responded with enthusiasm, and the program got under way with the selling of programs at basket- ball games and checking coats at the Percy Jones Gymnasium. Selling Dramatics Club pens was also a fill-the-treasury project. Betty Swain and Dick Kirschman exhibit their wares for Ron Huyck, Joanne Jodon, and John Doty. f f f' f .. V V y The club's schedule this year was indeed a full one. ln October they presented two one- act assembly plays entitled Child Wonder and How to Propose. Two three-act plays, You Can't Take It With You and Ladies ln Retirement, were given at the Southwest- ern Junior High School in November and Feb- ruary respectively. ln April the group pre- sented another one-act assembly play entitled Fool's Paradise. The productions were re- ceived enthusiastically by the student body, particularly the assembly plays. Reading lines in preparation for a play are lsittingl Sue Deo, Annette Gray, Stan Steele, Paul Patterer, Galen Foster, Wendy Walkinshaw, Retta Chitwood, fstandingl Judy Macey, and Nanci Blackerby. igdga n Play production does not involve merely actors and actresses, there are also boys and girls behind the scenes who give of their ideas and their talents. One of the big jobs is publicity, which involves numerous posters, newspa- per advertising, and stunts which will get people interested in attending. Scenery sets the stage, and this year the club built a complete set for the school. lt was a tremendous job, but the results will be worth it in the years to come. Putting in many hours of their time on this project are Gary Arm- strong, Wayne Stevens, Jim Harris and Richard Ashley. Seeing to the lighting are Marvin Hughey and Allan Ran- dall. Make-up is also an important part of any play, and they say that practice makes perfect. Demonstrating their talents on Janet Dutton, Nancy Vogler and Carol Chivington, are Leola Hilburn, Carol Hol- comb and Mitzi Rau. As a social activity this year, the club had a picnic in the spring for all the members. Also they entered a float in the homecoming parade. One of the most important events of the year was the announcement of those qualified to become members of the nation-wide Thespian Society. This is the first year that Central has been a charter member of this hon- orary dramatics' organization. To qualify, a person had to have fifteen points, which is equivalent to l50 hours of work. Points are accumu- lated by attending meetings, having a part in a play, working on scenery, etc. Looking proud and happy at the honor are lfirst rowl Richard Ashley, Mitzi Rau, Joanne Jodon, Nancy Pe- terson, Alan Randall, Mr. Glancy, 'second rowl Donna Love, Penny Pickens, John Doty, Janet Dutton, Bob Hook, Nancy Vogler, Dee Rose, lthird rowl Royce Richardson, Wayne Stevens, Wesley Robinson, Adie Herst, Carol Holcomb, Judy Macey and Leola Hilburn. Missing from the picture are Larry Peters, Paul Richardson and Virginia Rogers. -5292? L k '9 A 'V' x xw ag Q ni 3 Q25 W1 .3 I ' , 'WWE' 5 A: ev 'E ': - . V X , E 'N-. ' -H jlmdrjcanca a6'lunqaJ2alinqv!'7Z0 Since my first day as a sophomore till now as a graduating senior, I have followed Frisky in school work, sports, activities, and the lighter moments, all of which have been a part of my life at Central. Now, on my last day, he takes me by the hand and walks with me as I try to impress upon my mind each tiny detail of each scene that has become so familiar to me. First we go up the stairs to third floor and open the door of C-IZ. This is my counselors' office. Here I have always been welcome, whether I had a problem on my mind that I wanted to discuss or whether I mere- ly wanted to stop for a moment for a friendly talk. The study hall is right next door, and here and there a discarded magazine lies on a desk, showing that the room has not long been empty. How many hours I have spent here during class time, at noon, and before school, I cannot imagine. Next we go downstairs to the social room and never before has it seemed so big to me-or so empty. Here I have spent many pleasant hours, both at school dances and during the noon hour when I have stopped to talk with friends. We go out the big doors and upstairs once more to the library. In this place, anyway, I still find many of my friends-books that I have read and sometimes re-read, both for school assignments and for my own enjoyment. I came here often, for I knew I could al- ways find help. Lastly, we go downstairs to the school store. Dur- ing the year I came here at least once a day for school supplies, candy, or just talk. It is here that I take my leave of Frisky. His eyes are smiling at me and I know that at last I have reached the end of the path that I have followed faithfully. I shall miss this school that has been my life for three years, but tomorrow there will be new footprints to follow, a new symbol, new hopes, and new dreams.
