We are greatly indebted to you for your fine organization and training of the outstanding baseball team of this and previous years, and for the outstanding job you have done as the head of the Athletic Association. Witli this in mind, we, the Paean Staff, dedicate to you, Mr. Graham, the 1954 Paean, as a token of our appreciation. They are the men behind the scenes-the stage hands of a production such as this-the unsung heroes. Karlene Behnke was elected one of the business managers of the staff, but due to the pressure of home and school activities, she was forced to vacate her position. Before leaving, however, she was able to collect four pages of advertising, for which we are most grateful. Paul Allison has been a constant source of cheerfulness and humor on even the staff's blackest days, as well as a general handyman. No one can tell in full measure of the hours gained by the staff due to Paul's willingness to do the little things-unnoticed in final product, but essential to its making. Thanks loads, Paul! We all give our vote of thanks to Carol Greenfield, a junior, who has helped us a great deal doing such jobs as typing and proofing. These jobs are long and tedious ones, so we specially thank Carol for being an on-the-spoti' girl. Mickey McAllister proved a competent typist and an excellent photo-sorter. She spent long hours in our dark archives sorting out and classifying all the pictures taken by the staff. Marilyn Rook has helped immensely through the material she has written and the copy she has proofed. Only one who has worked hand in hand with the staff and our assistants can fully appreciate the time saved for the staff by Marilyn through her willingness to do the odd jobs that came up. Pete Vandervoort joined the staff late, but for his expert work in the writing of the sports material and the completion of that portion of the book, we express our deep gratitude. One doesn't realize how little they know of wrestling holds until suddenly faced with the necessity of having to write about them. It was like this when Pete proved an invaluable assistant to the nearly all-girl stad. Our hearty thanks, Pete! To Kay Borden, Roger Cote, jim Gray, Tom McClure and Bob Stone goes a special vote of thanks, for each helped on selling the advertising which, in a large part, pays for the book you are reading. Thanks to each and everyone for their assistance in our production! Finally to Mr. Max Misner, art teacher here at Central, goes our deepest appreciation for his expert technical advice on all matters of art in our book. We are deeply grateful to you, Mr. Misner, for your help! To each and every person who in any way helped with our production we say, thank you! Page 15 DEP RTI G DIMENSIIINS Mrs. Tressa Banks, who teaches civics, economics, and U. S. History, is, to the regret of all, leaving B.C.H.S. this year. Mrs. Banks was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and lived there until she graduated from Harrisburg Central High School. She then enrolled at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where she received her B.A. and M.A. After commencing her teaching career in Syracuse, New York, she attended the University of Michigan for one year and two summers. Following this, Mrs. Banks went back to Harrisburg to teach. When she married, she went to work as a chemist in the Chrysler plant for two years. Then she moved to Battle Creek and has taught here at Central for twenty-six years. Mrs. Banks, who has been to Europe, now plans to continue her travels. In addition, she says, I also want to do some fishing. Miss Sylvia Schermerhorn, who is also retiring this year, has taught commercial subjects at Central for forty years. During those years she has made many lasting friendships, never to be forgotten. She was born in New Haven, Indiana, and lived there until she reached the age of six. She then moved to Michigan and lived in St. Joseph County, near Colon. She graduated from Colon High School and taught three years in rural schools. Following this, she came to Battle Creek and attended Argubrights Business College. Upon graduation from Argubrights, she came to Central where she taught for eight years. She then attended Western Michigan College for one year and two summers. After completing her work there, she returned to Battle Creek Central to teach. She has remained here for the rest of her teaching career. As for future plans, Miss Schermerhorn is moving to jackson, where she and her sister plan to build a new home. All of us at Battle Creek High School are going to miss Mrs. Banks and Miss Schermerhorn and we assure them that they will always be remembered in the fondest of ways. Page 14 0UIl FACULTY ??? Many times we have entered their office with our troubles, always to be greeted by a friendly smile. During our sophomore and junior years they helped us iron out numerous problems in selecting a curriculum. They have been of even more help in preparing us, as seniors, for college or the business world. The Class of 1954 wishes to express its sincere thanks and appreciation to our two wise and experienced counselors. They have greatly aided us and we will always remember them for their skillful guidance. III II LIGHT Graduation Day, 1954 - a day long awaited by all of the Senior Class. But as this day approaches and we leave Central, we must realize that our future is a test on everything that we have learned in the past thirteen years. In order to be a success, we must pass this test. The application of all knowledge which we have acquired in our everyday lives is the most important part of this rest. If we cannot make use of the things which we have learned then they are of no value to us. In the future, social habits that we have developed through the years will also be noticed and we will be judged to some extent by them. The Sophomore Swing, the bl-Hop and the Senior Prom are only a few of the stepping stones which have helped us acquire these habits. In closing I wish to thank every member of the Senior class for his Hne help and coop- eration during this past year. I would like to thank the members of the Senior Board, for without them, it would have been impossible to carry on the class activities. NATIIINAL HUNCIR SUCIETY This year, fifty-seven seniors were awarded membership certificates for the National Honor Society. Ever since Central was admitted to the society in l925, it has been considered one of the greatest honors to be chosen for membership in this society, which honors the upper fifteen per cent of the graduating class. The eagerly awaited roll was announced in March. Membership is based on the grades of the first seven semesters of high school. Percentages are determined by giving a numerical value to each grade and computing the average. The top honor students who maintained an A average throughout their high school careers are Marsha Cortright and Jon Barsanti. SIDE LIGHTS It seems like only yesterday that we were sophomores enrolling here at Central. Yet, since that opening day we have witnessed and taken part in many school activities which we will remember for many years to come. Our annual J-Hop and the junior Play were both very successful. The play entitled Heaven Can Waitu, which was directed by Mr. William Smith, brought many laughs to the Centralites who saw it. We hope that the coming Junior-Senior Reception will be as big a success as our other activities have been. The other ofhcers and myself Wish to express our thanks to Miss Otha McCracken and Mr. Cornelius VanAndel for their very excellent counseling throughout the year. We would also like to thank everyone who, in any way, helped to make this year a happy and memorable one. Hugh Yeomans Preridefzl, Clair of '55 Page 60 4 S. Akers f r' ' .. Hyslop, Vice Presidentg D. Brown, President SIIAIIUVVS This year the class of 56 was faced with the usual adjustment to high school and the making of new friends. We feel that we have made great strides towards conquering these problems. Many thanks go to the upperclassmen and faculty for their help and co-operation. Gut main project this year was the Sophomore Swing which was held on January 25rd. The theme, Blue Moon , was carried out in the decorations. Among the new acquaintances that we have made this year are our counselors, Mr. Keith Chapman and Mr. Raymond Randels. As we stop to think we find it impossible to evalu- ate the help and guidance that they have given us. Thank you again. Dave Brown P1'e.1'iziemf, Clam of 56'l Page 72 -sf www . - k -L rf.. . The club has been organized to promote a fellow- ship of students interested in all types of radio work. Through the sale of donuts, the club was able to purchase a few items of equipment to improve their station CWSYNQ. The boys, with the assistance of their adviser, Mr, Phares, made contacts with many states and Alaska. This year one student earned his technician's license and four others earned their novice li- censes To obtain these licenses, the boys took the F.C.C, examinations. i The novices who must use a code are B. Welclier, B. Hickock, J. Dayhull and -I. Davis. These advanced students pictured may operate through a microphone with their adviser Mr. Phares. They are L. Hoskin and E. Davis. These boys are practicing to take the FCC. exam to become novices. They are G. DeGraw, standingg A. Miller, B. Walker, j. Stetler, and N. Terry, seated. Page S8 . TIIE CENTRAL KEY Since 1908 when the first school newspaper was distributed to Battle Creek high school stu- dents, the Central Key has been an indispensable source of information. The Key is published bi-weekly covering past and future news of school activities. In October, 1950 the printing classes of Vo- cational School took over the printing of the Key. The writing, collection of advertisements and co-ordination is all done by the students interested in journalism under the direction of Miss Evelyn E. Burke. This year the Key has made some changes, some liked by the student body and some disliked. However Editor-in-Chief Jeanne Tammi, and her staff, have tried to produce a school paper which presented an unbiased picture of life at Central. The staff attended a journalism Conference at Michigan State College in the fall and the annual journalism Day held at the University of Michigan in the Spring. Grouped around Editor-in'Chief J. The Orchestra gave an impressive Christmas program and an equally enjoyable Thanksgiving pro- gram. Their season ended with the annual Spring Con- cert and Spring Festival. The Marching Bands activities consisted of half time shows at the Football games, marching in parades for various civic functions, playing at Pep and other assemblies and representing the school at various band conferences. Mr. Alfred GMT Richards has brought to the Vocal Music Department a successful and educational year. The Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs both sang in the All-City Vocal Music Festival and the Kalamazoo Music Festival, both in April. The A Cappella Choir was again outstanding in its performance in all of its spring concerts as well as the presentation at the Security National Bank at Christmas. Through the hard work and sacrifice of Mr. Richards the entire Vocal Music Department combined to revive the once annual Spring Romance on May 7. Mr. Richards has always been on hand to lead singing at assemblies, to help individuals and ensembles to prepare for various programs and to act as an under- standing counselor in many ways. GIRLS' GLEE CLUB Again this year the Girls' Glee Club has proved itself to be a predominant organization of this school. Both the Thanksgiving and Christmas assemblies were beautifully given by the Glee Club. They attended the local Spring Music Festival and the Kalamazoo Spring Music Festival. The purpose of the Girls' Glee Club is to obtain a better understanding of music through participation and listening. It allows the participants to gain self-conhdence through voice study. Page 112 CHEERLEADERS Our school spirit was kept alive this year by our twelve vivacious cheerleaders who led the cheers for our teams through the seasons. The girls were selected for their poise, enthusiasm, skill and personal appearance. The boys worked hard this year, but the work did not pay off until the end of the year when Coach Mowersorfs team placed sixth in the state against very strong competitron. This year the team was led by Chuck Broecker and Denny Thompsett. The harriers won from Lansing Eastern and Ypsilanti, but lost to Lansing Sexton, Ann Arbor jackson and Kalamazoo. To all but Kazoo, the boys lost by very small margins. Larry Favorite was the state champion this year and was the only man to win all year. However, Battle Creek has every reason to be proud of its new head coach, Mr. Ted Kjolhede, and his able assistants, Mr. .less Vail and Mr. Vincent Carillot. Unfortunately for Battle Creek, Mr. Kjolhedes staff proved too efhcient and Mr. Carillot and Mr. Vail are leaving Central this year. Although the team didn't win all of its games this year, still it has every reason ro be proud. Against some of the strongest teams in the state, the Bearcats won five games and lost four. Two of our losses, one to Kalamazoo and one to Lansing Eastern, came after very tough battles in which Battle Creek put in sterling performances. The outlook for next years team, headed by Co-captains, Dick Donnell and jim Holds, looks very good with a strong group of boys coming up from the reserves. St. Philip and Lansing Eastern were the losing opponents. From then on until the regionals Battle Creek just didnft seein to have the winning touch. Our only other two wins were from Ann Arbor and Muskegon. However, in the Regionals the Bearcats really came to life. After a poor season, with just four wins to eleven losses, the Bearcats showed that all they needed was a bit of backing. Against a tough Holland team, Battle Creek showed some line team spirit and found themselves the victors with a score of 60 to 57. The next night the team bowed to Kalamazoo after a tied first half. We know that it would be impossible for us, alone, to produce the winning teams that we have, It is due to the fact that our coaches are among the finest in rhe state that our teams are of such fine caliber. We realize that it is the coaching that sheds light on our faults and pushes us on to victory when we are losing. And so, as the year ends, we want to take this time to wish our coaches the best of luck in the future. The stage has been set - the play has been given, and now the production is over. The cast has left for a longer role, for each must now play their part in the greater drama of life. Now only the setting - the halls of Central - remains. The building - the halls - the class- rooms - each corner, each landmark holds a special meaning for each student - and most particularly to each graduating senior. As I walk through these halls for the last time as a student, I think back over three long and fruitful years spent at Battle Creek High School. Here is the bridge - I remember it as it has been - crowded with students hurrying to classes, the sun dashing between the throngs to make gaily dancing shadows on the wall. Today it is empty, the sun shines brightly on nothing at all. My footsteps echo noisily, but are unable to fill the well made empty by sixteen hundred students suddenly leav- ing school. The senior study hall has served us well during our three year stay at Central. Here and there a magazine lies on a desk that is carved and rough from the many graduating classes it has seen. I remember the busy hours when home- work was all important - and those when little groups gathered for a session of talking out the future. Here is George Washington - the famed man's statue smiled down on many groups gathered at his feet for a quick chat before classes. The social room has been the scene of many pep rallies and informal gatherings. Today it is empty and bare, devoid of the decorations that have brought it to life. This DIEDIBER room knows a great deal - the walls echo back the music ofthe dances and the cheers of the pep meetings. Yes, the social room will remain among my choice memories of Central. The counselors' office where we took our problems and made our plans for the future will also be stored away among the memories of our high school days. The coun- selors have been our friends, advisers, helpers and directors throughout these years. They will now move on to a new class and new problems, but they will always be remembered by us for their kindness and expert guidance. l stop for the last time at my locker. The last books have been returned, the last loose papers thrown away - now there is only emptiness here and in all the other lockers up and down the hall. The slam of the door echoes all over the school, for where there was people and laughter there is only memories. A last drink at the drinking fountain where - be the weather warm or cold - there was always a group gathered for a chat and a drink. Finally out the doors - these same doors that l walked through for the hrst time nearly three years ago. And I close the door on my high school days as so many have before me. No matter what outward feelings each graduate may have, each must have a place somewhere in his heart for memories of his high school days. Yes, this I will remember. ---i7YY7.it,, , ,W W Y YY I AUT0GnAPns AMW f' 1-,f I, I X QAM M5 ,, pi I I , gl. . Ml f - f W' ' J MJ, ff' . ,L .
