Virginia Parr Retailing Secretary acuity embem eauing Cienlraf Two of Central's most loved and respected faculty members are retiring this year. Mrs. Marie Alwardt, who teaches Food and Nutrition, has taught at Central since l936. During these seventeen years she has made many friends among the students. She has lived in Battle Creek most of her life, attending old No. l Hiqh School and Battle Creek College where she maiored in Medical Dietetics. ln i930 Ann , rx ' was just opening and she was made head of the cafeteria and Foods teache. there. .. , Dr. J. H. Kellogg asked her to go to Miami- Battle Creek Sanatarium in Miami Becch, Flo.. 1 Medical Dietitian. She worked there until l936, when she came to Central. Her future plans include a trip to Mexico in the fall and she will again be Medical Dietitian from January to April at the Sanatarium in Miami Springs. Mrs. Alwardt said that she wants to do all the things she hasn't had time to do, but that she would miss the Contact with her troublesome tf ' ' Mrs. Ava Murray, who is alsr g, has taught for thirty-one years, twenty-eight of them here at Central and the other three at .Id Central Junior high. She has taught mathematics in grades 9-12 all this time. Her Alma Mater is Northwestern University, but she han also attended Universities of Chicago and Michigan, Columbia University and Western Michigan. Mrs. Murray said that she was looking forward to keeping house for her father and husband next year and that she really has no regrets about leaving. She has enioyed her teaching career, as have all her pupils, but she thinks that after this long, it's best that she retire and let a younger person take over her responsibilities, not because she isn't equal to them, but because she feels that the difference in age and experience makes it difficult to establish common ground. Interestingly enough, Mrs. Murray was a member of the first freshman class to enter this building. Her contri- bution to the education and enioyment of school of many students has been considerable. Other teachers who are leaving Central this year are Miss Joan Hedges, Mr. Fred Lax, Miss Virginia Magdanz, Mrs. Aino Nylund, Mr. Alfred Racchini, and Mr. Robert Waldorf. Page l2 Jessie C. Weihcrell, M. A. o ou ecognize ur acuity. 'I Faculty members enioy Clash Day along with the students. Mr. Richards is always dressed up - this year he looks like a Japanese sandman. Mrs. Wetherell and Miss Estes are among the teachers to carry on with their regular duties al- though they are dressed in a somewhat unusual manner. Not all members of the faculty showed up in costumes on Clash Day. To prove this we have Mr. Postma and Mr. Graham shown discussing a sports problem while Mr. Doran and Mr. Gillespie look on. Miss Marti might not look like a respectable teacher, ' ..l can give her sewing students valuable ..,Js on haw to put garments together correctly. We agree with Miss Fesing-this is quite a spectacle. The student revealing the paiamas is Donna Gray, and as for the other, well- it's Ruth Harris. We hope she doesn't lose her bloomers. Page l3 hey Keep the make Jeiaing l. 2.- This capable quartette, Beverly Bonney, Janice An- derson, Mildred DeBoer, Catherine Kelley have kept the office burning brightly throughout the school year. Miss Bonney is the secre- tary to the principal, Mrs. Anderson is the secretary in the attendance office, Mrs. DeBoer is the registrar, and Miss Kelley is the secretary of the high school office. 3. Mr. Bagg, Ml. Hager, and Mr. Riva, school custo- dians are taking a well earned breather. Mr. Mer- riam, Mrs. Williams, Mr. Aldrich, Mrs. Christopher, and Mr. Vest are chatting with Mr. Miller, the chief custodian. Mr. Miller's help and cooperation on the school dances has been greatly appreciated this year by the students. Page I4 iw fpkxfgfww M GW K gc? Our social and academic stature has been enriched greatly. Not one of us can an be assured that our high school experiences will have a direct hort predict our destinies, but we c bearing on them. Not to be forgotten are the many social activities we enioyed. These were highlighted by the Sophomore Swing, our J-Hop, the Junior Play, the Senior Play, and that most memorable one, our Senior Prom. l l ' n l wish to thank the members of the Senior board and all members of the class n conc usio , for their help during the past school year. Also l wish to thank in behalf of all seniors, our most honorable faculty, and especially the two men who have helped and guided us over the rough spots, Mr. Keith Chapman and Mr. Ray Randels, our counselors. Our high school life has been happy and rewarding, and we seniors will never forget it. Bill Pugh President, Class of '53 Page l 6 5 ML Randek and Mn Chapman alfwaga Ready with a ire cfhxlingublzer Mr. Chapman's drawl and Mr. Randel's grin have become familiar sights to the class of '53. For those who have worries and those who just want to chat, C-12 has become a haven. When we were sophomores and iuniors, these counselors were always ready to help us with the important task of selecting a curriculum. As seniors, their assistance has been of even more value as we are preparing to enter college or the business world. Keeping our school records and helping carry out our activities has been another helping hand that these two wonderful men have willingly extended. The Class of l953 wishes to express its sincere appreciation to two friends who will always be remembered. Their wisdom and experience have started us down the road to being good and useful citizens. This year there were sixty-three seniors chosen for the coveted membership. The rank is determined by the grades of a student from the ninth grade through the first semester ofthe twelfth grade. lt is computed on a point basis: each mark being given a numerical value and the average figured. lt is a distinct honor to be a member. The membership list which is announced in April is awaited eagerly. This year's honor students were Linda Gail Morrison and Christine Joan Baker, both of whom are very active in clubs and other organizations, besides being such fine students. Preserving a good enough record to make one eligible for National Honor Society is not simple, and praise and congratulations go to this year's members. FIFTH ROW: J. Caldwell, W, Grunt, R. Part of this course is the construction of a World Map by each student. Willard Grant, Nancy Williams, and Kay Wallace are inspecting one of these maps while Miss Cook is writing topics for current event reports on the board. Current events keep students alert to what is happening in the world around them. A class which has a practical application for many boys, especially those who plan a career in en- gineering, is mechanical drawing. Here, the boys are shown operating the blueprint machine under the guidance of Mr. Anderson. The boys who are studying Delbert DeRees' blueprint are Ray Val- entine, Jerry McNeil, and Dick Mullen. Reading a radio script which they have prepared over a microphone lust like one would find in a real radio studio gives these students experience which may prove invaluable. The class is radio workshop and the girl reading is Alice Sparks. lt's a question whether the car will survive, but the auto mechanics boys usually turn out a smooth running motor. They learn a lot and have a lot of fun seeing how autos tick . Senior students pictured at work are Chuck Richardson, Jim Brown Bob Tessin, Jim Smith, and Jim Tuttle. Pictured checkina a mahogany desk in the wood working class are: Jim Lampman, Jewell Price, Richard Fox, Bob luke, Wyland Gibbs and Jim Pear- son. These boys are taught to construct furniture and really turn out some fine-looking pieces. Page 58 if 'fs fi? i' 3. .T .4,i,- Y' ig? 'Ni 'f' R, 53' iw ski M, ,S f A A 4 5' fm , l, Q ivnv . The plot in- volved three fellows and three girls who were trying to get into the theater in New York City. Because of lack of funds, they shared an apartment, which led to many mixups and much scandal. The play was a hard one to produce, but the cast and director, Mr. William Smith, put it over very well. Our Junior year has been filled with many worth-while activities. Our annual J-Hop and the Junior-Senior Reception were both a success, and a good time was had by all. Also a success was the Junior Play, a comedy by Oscar Wilde entitled, The Impor- tance of Being Earnest, directed by Mr. William Smith. We wish to thank the Seniors forthe help and guidance they have given us during our Sopho- more and Junior years and to wish them luck in the years to come. Our counselors, Miss Helen Houvener and Miss Frances McCowen, were a great help to us in selecting our class rings and collecting the class dues. We would like to thank them for all the counseling help they have given the class of '54. There were a great number of new classmates to get acquainted with and also new subiects to learn. However, with the help of the upperclassmen we adiusted ourselves without any trouble. The Sophomores did a successful job of putting on the Sophomore Mixer which was made possible by the class dues. With the good spirit of our class and the fine guidance given us by our counselors, Miss Otha McCracken and Mr. Cornelius Van Andel, we are certain that in '54 and '55 we will do iust as good a iob as the past classes have done. We would like to wish the Senior class of '53 the best of luck in the future. One of the activities sponsored by this organization is the annual Christmas Formal. This year's theme was 'iYuletide Villa . The whale first floor was decorated to represent a quaint village at Christmas time. 'bf' l. Spanish club members J. Wilder, E. Wu, A. Henke, G. Mitchell, D. Randalls, Miss Burnham, adviser, L. Sehy, M. Bell, B. Pettibone and G. Roberts are singing Spanish Christmas caroles. 2. S. Hickey and L. Sehy are doing a gay Spanish samba. 3. Senores L. Mason, D. Randalls, L. Sehy and J. Davis are dressed in authentic Spanish garb. 4. OHicers of the Spanish Club G. Mitchell, treasurer, M. Doty, president, C. Baker, vice-president, and G. Roberts, secretary are planning future club activities. panidlz Since Espanol is such a popular language it naturally follows that the Spanish Club is a popular club, being composed of the students who are taking or have taken Spanish. Miss Madge Burnham sponsors the club and this year's officers were Martha Doty, president, Christine Baker, vice president, Ginger Roberts, secretary, and Grace Mitchell, treasurer. This year the meetings ofthe club were held once a month during class periods. Two parties were held with the other language clubs, one at Christmas and one in the spring. During Christmas the members sang Christmas carols in Spanish and won the annual carol contest between the three language clubs. The club also has been trying the characteristic Spanish dances such as the samba. The members have been working toward a better under- standing of the Spanish-speaking people. Page 94 l'eI'lCll The Cercle Francais or French Club is open to all students taking French and its purpose is to develop further interest in the French language and culture. This year's officers were Dale Thorngate, president, John Hubly, vice presidentg Sally Sleight, secretary, and Janice Hoag, treasurer. The adviser is Mrs. Elizabeth Walters. The club is organized by classes, each individual class having its own officers, and the club has coordinated the activities of the classes. It presented many beautiful programs at school, at local clubs and organizations, and at state and national meetings. This year the choir was invited to par- ticipate in the North Central Division of the National Music Educators' Conference at Mil- waukee, Wisconsin. The members worked hard all year to earn enough money to finance the trip. This year the ofTicers were Dale Thorn- gate, president, Ken Austin, vice-president, Tootie Warren, treasurergand Laura Bennett and Alice Sparks, librarians. Gerry Graham, baseball coach. 3. John Gillespie, Central's wrestling coach. 6. Golf coach, Cliff Gettings. Coach Bob Waldorf in his 7th and last season with the Bearcat football team won 6 games, lost l, and tied 2. This record proved to be the best compiled by any Central team since l928. This gave Mr. Waldorf his 6th winning season in 7 years. Next we meet Bob Mowerson, Central's cross-country, swimming, and track coach. His cross- country team had 4 wins and 4 losses this year, placing second in the 5-A competition. His swimming team had their first losing season this year, previously B. C. has won the 5-A champion- ship every year. Coach Mowerson has been with the track team for 7 years, winning two 5-A championships. ln his three years of coaching at Central, Ray Randels has been a popular coach. He has coached basketball and also tennis. Although the basketball team has never won a championship the cagers have placed second in 5-A competition. In previous years Coach Randels has had a very successful tennis team which won the tennis title 2 years out of a possible two. John Gillespie in his first year at Central turned out a good wrestling team. Three members of the team placed in State competition. Although the wrestlers lost every dual meet during the season, the team had much individual strength. Cliff Gettings has been at Central i4 seasons as golf coach. Although the golfers have won only two 5-A championships under his leadership, the linksters have produced some excellent individual golfers. This year's squad will not go down in history for its wonderful record but some excellent matches were played. Since T936, Gerry Graham has been Central's baseball coach. During this time, Central has won the 5-A title quite frequently, which must be due at least in part to his good coaching, Baseball is one of his loves, and he produces fine players.
