The memorable events, football games, club initiations, swimming meets, formal and informal dances might well be only vague memories, never to be recalled fully if it were not for the medium of printing and photography. The Paean Staff has endeavored to present you with a permanent record of many of the extracurricular activities as well as the classroom experiences in which the students of Battle Creek High School have participated. Graduation is probably the first milestone of any great importance in our lives. What graduation means to us largely depends upon the attitude we have taken toward our high school work. Some of us have had in mind the diploma as a reward for good work and the recognition that it might bring. Others plan to use their knowledge gained in school only as a stepping-stone to something higher. Our three years here have done much to prepare us for the future. We have been furnished with opportunities to develop our talents through the active support of very responsive and helpful teachers and parents. l know how much we all have anticipated our graduation day, but l can't help feeling senti- mental as l look back over our years at Central, and suddenly realize that we will soon be leaving, never to return to Battle Creek High School as students again. ln conclusion, l wish to thank each member of the Senior Class for his cooperation given me and the other officers during the school year, and the Seniors as a whole extend their heartiest and warmest thank you to our most helpful counselors, Miss Helen Houvener and Miss Frances McCowen. Roy Bordeaux, President, Class of '57 Page 14 aiiona! Honor ocieiy The National Honor Society in high school is similar to the Phi Beta Kappa in college. This year sixty students were eligible for the honor of belonging to the National Honor Society. A membership in the organization is gained by keeping grades high enough to be classified in the upper fifteen per cent of the graduating class. Members who were not present when the picture was taken were John C. Christenson, William Lewis, Laurence Lindauer, Marlynd Oliver, Millicent Sigler, Gary Skidmore, Sally Sumrill, Catherine Talbot and Phyllis Wright. The long awaited roll is announced in April. Students who are on the Honor Society may buy emblems of various kinds. Membership is determined by the grades of the students from the ninth grade on through the first semester of their senior year. Counci ln February of l937, the Student Council was organized for the purpose of giving students a sense of responsibility for their school and an opportunity to assist in the betterment of school conditions whenever possible. Performing school services, providing social activities, and develop- ing good relations with other schools are a few of the objectives of the council. The student body is represented in the Student Council by a representative and an alternate elected from each homeroom, who served for one semester. The officers are elected at large and serve a full year. Ex-officio members, main officers in the maior organizations of the school, also serve a full year but have no voting right. The student directories, the telephone book of students, were something new for B.C.H.S. The summer dances and several Saturday night dances, the Christmas formal, Band Follies and student exchange, and Homecoming were only a few of the numerous accomplishments of the Student Council. Page 52 :Student Counci One of the activities that took a great deal of careful planning and work was the annual Vocational Day. On this day people from all professions and vocations were brought to the school for a meeting with students who were interested in their particular field. The purpose of this day was to give students a keener insight into vocations that might interest them as a life work. Open House, held in the fall, gave the parents, students, and the teachers a chance to meet on an informal basis and discuss the work of students. This year the Student Council worked long and hard to make the program for I Am An American Day one of the biggest of its kind ever to be held in Battle Creek. Clash Day, usually held as near to April FooI's Day as possible, was a festive day for both teachers and students. All these activities sponsored by the Student Council create better understanding between students and faculty, promote good feeling and cooperation among classmates, and make life at Central more pleasant for all. The purpose ofthe club is to increase the cultural background and knowledge of the ancient as well as the present world civilization and provide an opportunity to meet new friends. Members corresponded with students in Germany as part of their activities for the year. They also participated in the annual assembly produced by the language clubs. Social activities included the Christmas party and the roller skating party. Few students will forget the Latin Club's participation in the language assembly. A gladiator dance, a duet sung in Latin by two students and a chorus line singing a song featuring various aspects of Latin classes were among the many attractions. The assembly was prepared by committees of students chosen from different Latin classes. Page 54 Spanialz Club Alianza Espanola, or the Spanish Club, as our non-Spanish-speaking students refer to it, met every six weeks with all students enrolled in Spanish classes eligible for membership. The Spanish Club gave students interested in Spanish an opportunity to meet together socially, to develop their interest in Spanish-speaking lands, and to promote an understanding of Spanish culture. The local group gave a party to entertain the Lakeview Spanish Club. A Christmas party was held in collaboration with the other two language clubs. The Pan-American assembly in the spring was another of their proiects. FOURTH ROW: S. Fagan, B. Gronewald, W. Grant, J. Smith, M. Burtis, G. Holcombe, N. Boyd, J. Barger, B. Redner, T. Ashley, J. Club Any student who is taking or has taken French is eligible for membership in Le Cercle Francais, or the French Club. The purpose ofthe club is to develop a greater interest in France cmd French culture and provide an opportunity for using the language. Trips were made to Michigan State College in Lansing and to Kalamazoo to see films and plays in French. Games and songs in which only the French language is permitted were the activities for the meetings. Two big parties were held in collaboration with the Latin and Spanish clubs. They also worked on the language club assembly, which was held on Pan-American Day. The portion of the assembly sponsored by the French Club transferred the audience to a typically French sidewalk cafe. More atmosphere was added when a solo was sung in French. A vivacious folk dance and the entire group ioining in the French National Anthem concluded their part of the assembly. Page 56 cience The Science Club brings together the students of science to promote interest in their common field. The annual Science Fair was one of their main proiects, and this year proved to be excep- tionally successful. A great deal of research was needed on the part of the members to prepare the displays on atoms, microscopic life and other booths of scientific phenomena. Visiting the I. P. I. Ink Co. and watching the chemical process of making ink was very interesting. The members had an educational and fun-filled trip to Chicago, where they visited the museum of Science and lndustry, Planetarium, and other points of scientific interest. The first maior event of the year was a colorful initiation of new members where about 75 students were admitted to the club. Officers for the year were elected at the initiation. The members had a Christmas party at the Postum Club House. One of the highlights of the evening was a tour of the Control Laboratories conducted by Mr. Deland Davis and his assistcnt chemists. Another maior event was the Science Club assembly where some of the members did various experiments and demonstrations for the student body. SIXTH ROW: Mr. Phares, B. Brady, A. Wilber, C. Haas, B. This group is open to all high school students who express a desire to write to students in foreign lands. At the first meeting ot the year the members selected countries that interested them. Then addresses of people in these countries were distributed to the membership. One ofthe interesting activities this year was the correspondence with a group in Japan, known as the L. P. F. The aim ofthe L. P. F. was to learn more about American students and to create better relations between Japanese and American youths. Correspondence was carried on by members of the Pen Pals Club with students all over the world. The main purpose of the club is to give its members a better understanding of the situation existing in foreign countries and possibly provide a use for a language cz student has been studying. Page 58 ook Club One of the Book Club's main objectives is the development of literary appreciation. The club members, all girls, meet every two weeks in the homes ofthe members. The girls discuss and review the best in classic and contemporary books. The books reviewed this year included Jed Blaine's Wcman by Wells, Fountainhead by Rand, Scarlet Letter by Hawthorne, Immortal Wife by Stone, Seventeenth Summer by Stevenson, Saratoga Trunk by Edna Ferber, and Mr. LincoIn's Wife by Colver. The second objective, that of having fcn, is carried through the second portion of each meeting. Knitting, talking, and refreshments create a congenial atmosphere. One of the main projects was the knitting of an afghan, which is to be sent to Percy Jones Military Hospital. The Book Club is one of the largest clubs in Central, with any girl interested in reading being invited to join. FOURTH ROW: S. McClelland, C. Baker, N. Meyers, M. Millice, M. Romick, P. Whit:-, M. This organization was formed during the First World War as a military organization. Today the group acts as a girls' league in purpose and program. The executive board of the D. of L. consists of ten girls elected in the spring by all the girls in high school. To help the board carry out their plans representatives and alternates are elected from each homeroom. The representatives carry the wishes of the girls in their homerooms to the executive board and keep them informed on Daughters of Liberty activities. Representatives are all given a chance to serve on one of the following committees: Social, Program, Project, School Service, Ways and Means, with a member of the board as co-chairman. Each spring an assembly is held during which girls for the next year's board are nominated. Elections are held in the homerooms. There are five seniors and three juniors on the board. Page 60 . . . and Jeeprwentaliuea The sophomore members are elected in the fall by the girls of the sophomore class through their Basic Living classes. The activities sponsored by the Daughters of Liberty are numerous. ln the fall a welcoming tea for sophomore girls was held. At Christmas time the girls complimented their mothers at a Mother and Daughter tea. The Fall Frolic and the May Party, both semi-formal, were sponsored by the girls. Both of these dances were girl-date-boy affairs. ln March, the Daughters of Liberty held a pot luck banquet. After the dinner, square dancing and singing provided a festive evening. ln the spring, a young woman's fancy turns to thoughts of a new spring wardrobe. From this comes one of their main proiects for the year - the Daughters of Liberty Style Show. The L. W. Robinson Co. furnished the clothes for the show and models were chosen from the high school on the basis of appearance. The Style Show was presented in an afternoon assembly for girls only. This club provides a chance for a girls' social organization as well as a group with high charitable aims. The first big party sponsored by the Y-Luncheon was the semi-formal Hallowe'en Hop with Johnny Jay's orchestra. The dance carried out the theme of Witches WhirI with black and orange decorations on the walls and dance cards. Slumber parties were held during the fall and spring at the Y. W. C. A. ln May, officers were elected and then installed at the big installation dinner in June. Easter egg baskets were given to needy children from the Y-Luncheon club members. ln February, a few members were sent to the Mid-Winter Conference at Clear Lake. This year's president and two other delegates from the Y-Luncheon will spend one week at Camp Tyrone, near Flint. Page 62 M- 6ll'lC2 Oal' Cooperation between Lakeview and Battle Creek High Schools contributes to better dance programs for the students. The Dance Board meets every other Thursday night to audition bands and plan future dances. This year the dances have been held about once a month in the gym- nasium ofthe Y. W. C. A. Each member of the board sold tickets at various dances throughout the year. Students wishing to serve on the board must turn in a written application to the members of the previous yearls board. The board then votes on the application. Any student at Battle Creek or Lakeview high school who wishes to serve on this board may apply for membership. This year's board included Barbara Barnes, Susan Freeman, Sandra Hanford, Ron Nulf, Nancy Taylor and Louise Gould from Lakeview. Representing B. C. The aim of the organization is to acquaint students with the various levels of teaching in the hope of giving them a better understanding of the profession. , The F. T. A. made field trips to the University of Michigan and Michigan State College. The new and modern Coburn School was also visited by the group. A discussion was held among the members of the group on the subject, What I would like to get out of practice teaching. Several conferences were held with the administrators of the school system about the teaching vocation. On Vocational Day students were given an opportunity to visit the various elementary and iunior high schools. Classes of different age groups and types were observed. Teachers in the rooms explained to the students what the class was doing and how it was being done. interested students continued to observe classroom techniques the rest of the year. Next year they will go into the classes as practice teachers. Page 64 yu ture urJe.4 The Future Nurses Club studies professional or practical nursing through the use of films and on-the-spot observation of hospital procedure. ln their effort to gain first-hand information about the profession, they have visited several hospitals: Sparrow in Lansing, Bronson and Borgess in Kalamazoo, and Percy Jones and Leila in Battle Creek. The big event of the year was their visit to the hospital at the University of Michigan. A film, Girls in White , on the different phases of nursing was viewed by the three Battle Creek Future Nurses clubs. Both student nurses from hospitals and professional nurses from the various fields of nursing have talked with them about nursing as a career. A convention was held in the fall with rep- resentatives from over seventy-five high school chapters. This year the club members received Future Nurses Club pins. Any girl in high school who is interested in the profession of nursing is eligible for membership. SECOND ROW: D. McRoberts, M. Zook, C. Mack, J. Brigham, D. Ridenour, E. Flo, F. Cech, J. Kincaid. Various arguments were presented for and against the topic, Resolved: That the American People Should Reject The Welfare State. The varsity debaters were Happy Dolliver, George Trubow, Steve Thernstiom, Pat Van Vleet, and Pat Olson. Activities for the year have also included radio debates with Lansing Eastern and Lansing Sexton High Schools. The debaters have also appeared before several civic organizations and participated in a demonstration debate with the Hastings team before the Hastings P. T. A. A class in debate is ottered in wlzich any students interested inthe subiect may enroll. Students may also take part in extra-curricular debating after school. Page 66 pring Speech Spring Speech offers a chance for students to develop communicative skills in formal situa- tions and gives an opportunity for recognition of efficiency in these skills. This year more students were interested than ever before. Contestants from four areas are entered in competition with the other 5-A schools. The four areas are oratorical declamation, dramatic reading, oration and extemporaneous speaking. The students who represented Battle Creek High School in the 5-A league were Oratorical Declamation-Norma Knowles, Lois Perry, Oration-Pat Olson, Jim Darkey, Dramatic Reading- Ron Berry, Roberta Jeffers, Extemporaneous Speaking-Steve Thernstrom, George Trubow. Roberta Jeffers placed for regional competition. Other activities for the year include presenting a high school assembly, appearing in as- semblies before Southeastern, Southwestern, W. K. Delegates were sent to various conference groups. Representative to the Hi-Y State Legislature was Tom Elliott, who ran for president of the conference. The older boys' conference in Ann Arbor, during the summer of l95l, will have representatives from the local group. A Christmas party, free of charge, held at the Y. M. C. A. was open to all high school students. Page 68 Radio The members ofthe Radio Club meet once a week to form a fellowship of students interested in all phases of radio work. The members have been working on a 75 meter transmitter which will enable them to contact other radio clubs all over Michigan. Making contacts with St. Joseph, which has a very active radio organization, is one of the aims of the group. Radio Club members who have graduated from B. C. H. S. and nioved on to college have kept in touch with the local group by radio. Several of the boys are working for novice licenses which will enable them to transmit for one year. Work of this type has proven to be valuable to boys planning to go into the field of radio. STANDING: Dick Bradley, Frank Johnson, Mr. Phares, Adviser. Page 72 Key Staff Since 1908, when the first school newspaper was distributed to Battle Creek high school students, the Central Key has been an indispensable source of information. The Key is published bi-weekly and gives the latest coverage on news of school activities. Last year marked a distinct milestone in the publication of the Central Key. ln October, the printing classes of the Vocational school took over the printing of the Key. At first, because of the lack of a large press, the paper was small. However, in April the Vocational department acquired a large printing press and the Key went back to a regular newspaper size. Any student who is interested in newspaper writing, advertising or printing may become a member of the Key stat? by contacting its adviser, Miss Evelyn E. Burke. At the same time JRC members are preparing for their place in tomorrow's world. To gain these ends, the JRC Council was organized to inform the students of the available opportunities and supervise the student's activities. The council attracts ambitious young people who wish to work on community services, world understanding, health and safety activities, and leadership training, all of which are avenues of preparation for tomorrow's citizens. The field of opportunity is large and varied, thus fitting into the interests of many students, The members in this school have completed many activities in production, such as making cookies, ash trays, sewing bed covers, making favors for hospitals, making Christmas cards, and drawing pictures for exchange with foreign countries. Many students have taken the home nursing and first aid courses, sponsored by the JRC. Other interests and activities are included in international correspondence, and personal service to help in the military hospitals and in the community. Mr. Klein came to Battle Creek from New York City, where he had been teaching and engaged in theater work. Starting immediately to work with this high school's musicians, Mr. Klein presented a concert for the teachers at the Michigan Education Association last fall. The orches- tra collaborated with the A Cappella in the presentation of the Christmas concert. The orchestra season ended with two concerts in the spring. With Mr. Klein's emphasis on ensembles, some fine groups were formed, performing for an adiudicator from Michigan State College. Jiang! The High School Band maintained its reputation this year as a fine musical organi- zation at its numerous concerts and appear- ances in assemblies. The band, marching and concert, played at the football games, at the Michigan Educational Association con- ferences, and numerous other places, among them the Holland Tulip Festival. Mr. Paul Tammi, director of the band, is well-known in Battle Creek, having served in the public school system for twenty years, first as a director of the band and orchestra and lastly as supervisor of instrumental music. Our football team won five games, lost three, and tied one. We ran into more trouble with our own conference this year than with the big football powers outside of the 5-A. After scoring first, we lost our opener to one of the best teams in the state, Flint Central, by a 20-7 score. This was our only loss outside of the 5-A. We defeated two Grand Rapids teams, South and Union. ln one of the biggest upsets of the year we defeated Union, which was Grand Rapids City Champion, by a 26-O score. We played our poorest game against Lansing Eastern, losing 6-7. This was a heart-breaker, for it literally put us out of the running as a contender for the 5-A crown. We were the only team in the 5-A to hold the Champion Ann Arbor team to a six point difference. In finishing out the season the Bearcats won the most prized victory in outlasting our perennial foe, Kalamazoo, for a 9-6 win. Late in the first quarter they centered the ball out of their end zone for an automatic safety. Kazoo then kicked off and Dick Sovern electrified the crowd by returning it 55 yards for a touchdown. The try-for-point, carried by Bannister, was good making the score 9-O. Kazoo intercepted a pass late in the third quarter which eventually led to their ttouchdown, but we succeeded in blocking their try for the conversion. In the closing minutes of he game the Maroons marched the length of the field only to have their drive brought to a dra- matic halt by Kay Sootsman's timely tackling. Along with a good team we had several outstanding players this season. Two of the best were Dave Drake, a pass-snagging end, and Bill Gray, a hard-hitting guard. Both boys received All-State honors on several selections. Ron Berry, a speedy half-back, along with Dave, made the All 5-A team. Co-Captains Clare Bagnall and Maynard French were the most versatile players and among the rr.ost outstanding. Clare played two positions during the Kalamazoo game. Eofh Clare and Maynard played several different positions during the season. The playing of Earl Johnson at end was consistently good. We were also blessed with two giant tackles in Palmer Beebe and John Miller. The courage, effectiveness and loyalty of the other graduating seniors: Bannister, Benfield, Bordeaux, Christ, Cripps, Lightlzody, Mayo, O'Heran, and Towns will be sorely missed next fall. For the first time in the history of Battle Creek, Coach Bob Mowerson has brought a State Champion Cross Country team to B. C. H. S. The champs lost only one dual meet this season, dropping their first encounter with Kalamazoo by one point, 27-28. The Harriers made up for this loss be beating the Maroons in their next four tests. The team showed power by scoring slams against Lansing Eastern and Hastings, then allowing Jackson, Benton Harbor, and Lansing Sexton to place only one man in the first six places. Before the 5-A Chamspionships the Harriers prepared themselves by winning the Hastings Hill and Dale meet and the Albion College Invitational meet. ln these big events several schools were entered providing tough comeptition. The Harriers capped the 5-A crown by scoring 25 points less than second place Ann Arbor. Battle Creek finishers were Jim Arnold, lst, Val Eichenlaub, 4th, Ed Houldsworth, 5th, Preston Brown, oth, Dale Ferrall, lOth, Jim Youngs, llth, Duane Osborn, loth. ln the first running of the State Cross Country Championships Battle Creek was left at the starting line except for Jim Arnold, who finished first. The starter had made an error in the starting time and several other teams were also left. The officials allowed the meet to count, but invited the teams to return the next week for a re-running. Kalamazoo, the winner of the first meet, did not return. ln the final meet Battle Creek won easily with Ann Arbor again far back. The Harriers finished Arnold, lst, Eichenlaub, 4th, Houldsworth, l2th, Brown, l3th, Youngs, l5th, Ferrall, 2Oth, Osborn, 25th. The outstanding members of the team this year were Jim Arnold, Co-Captains Val Eichenlaub, and Jim Youngs, and Ed Houldsworth. Jim Arnold went through the season undefeated and broke seven records including the State record. Val placed second in nearly all the meets with both Jim Youngs and Preston Brown rounding out the team. They are unbeatable. Page 98 Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Battle Creek . Coach Bob Mower- son brought the tankers from a good Class A team to one of the strongest scoring teams in the school's history. This year made it the nineteenth time that Battle Creek has won the 5-A Cham- pionship in twenty tries. Battle Creek showed tremendous power in capturing five first places in the State meet. The team was not up to par in the 5-A, but nevertheless they nearly broke the meets scoring record with 93 points. The individual stars that composed this team included John Hubly, a sophomore, who improved as the season went along and ended up with a second in the 5-A, besides winning first place in the State meet with a time of l:O6.8 in the 100 yd. breaststroke. Dyke Purdy, a backstroker placing first in the 5-A and State meet, set a new record for the high school with an exceptional time of l:O3. Frank Paganni placed second to Dyke in nearly every meet and if it hadn't been for Frank, Dyke might not have gone at such a fast rate. Bill Gray in the individual medley finished the season undefeated. He broke the school record with a time of l:4O.7. Bill is un- doubtedly the greatest competitor Battle Creek has ever turned out. Jim Taft and Dick Pratt have been competing ever since junior high school and finally ended up first and second in the state respectively. Jim and Dick also placed first and second in the 5-A, and are expected to repeat next year as Battle Creek's star divers. Ed Shupert in the lOO yd. free style placed second in the 5-A, and third in the state. The Co-Captains, Gary Gresly and Pete Oliver, rounded out the individual stats in this all-star team to make it the state championship team. The two relay teams added additional points by placing the free style relay first in the 5-A and the medley relay first in the state meet. The team included Lynn Towns, Norm Hutchinson, Gary Gresly, and Bill Gray in the free style relay and Dyke Purdy, John Hubly and Ed Shupert in the medley relay. They had height, a fair amount of speed, and good team play, but they lacked the something that kept them from being a consistently winning team. They hit their stride in the Ann Arbor and Bay City Handy games, when they downed Bay City 82 to 56 and handed Ann Arbora 59-43 defeat. Both of these teams were highly rated in the state. The most phenomenal thing about Coach Ray Randels' squad was that while they lost ten games and won only six, their opponents outscored them by a mere eight points. They lost five games by two points or less, while winning three by only a one and two point margin. Dick Otis and Captain Walt North were chosen for the All-5-A teams, and the All-City teams also chose North and Otis along with Bob Bivens, a iunior. Otis led the city in scoring with l9l points and North was third with l65. Gordon Roebuck was Captain Elect for the l95l-52 season. Coached by Allen Bush for most of the season, the Bearcat matmen took fourth in the State and third in the 5-A Champion- ships. Tam Ashley and Pete Christ were the Co-Captains of this year's team and helped Coach Don Cooper considerably. Mr. Donald Cooper took over the coaching duties when Mr. Allen Bush was called to the Marines. Pete Christ brought the first wrestling championship to Battle Creek by winning in the T40 lb. class. Other placers in the State meet were Chuck Shulters second in the 97 lb., Dave Johnson third in the T35 lb., Jim Hester third in the T75 lb., Roy Bordeaux second in the T67 lb., and Carroll Ferguson fourth in the T05 lb. Membership in the club is open to all boys who have won varsity letters in any sport. Before new members were admitted to the organization they were subjected to a rugged initiation. One ofthe main activities this year was selling Bearcat cushions. Sales were carried on at the games, in the school store, and in homerooms. The club sponsored a noon hour dance and acted as guards during the basketball games at Percy Jones Gymnasium. Another initiation is held in the spring for boys who have won letters in the winter sports. By the time winter is over various statues and steps around the school need to be cleaned for spring. The Lettermen's Club is very helpful about supplying labor for this annual spring house cleaning. Membership cards that are to be kept by the members and used in the future were issued this spring. Sophomore Offwera As newcomers to the high school, the class of '53 was faced with many difTerent situations, such as meeting new friends, new subiects, and new teachers. But with the help of the upper- classmen and the faculty we adiusted ourselves very quickly. The Sophomores tried something new this year. They held a Square Dance which was a big success. Practice in the Basic Living classes helped to make the dance possible. On April 2lst the annual Sophomore Swing was held. The theme this year, Stormy Weather , was carried out in the decorations. Dues collected in the fall helped put on the swing. The enthusiasm of the class helped put it over successfully also. We would like to thank Mr. Keith Chapman and Mr. Robert Maitner for their outstanding guidance in helping us with our projects. Dick Barney Class President Page! l 32 M. Abair A. Abels - M.
