Two times men have given their lives to defeat rulers who have had a greed for power. Two times these lives could have been saved. Will there be a third time? The answer to this question rests wholly upon our actions-for we will be the presidents, kings, dictators, the rulers of to- morrow. We will, therefore, have in our possession the power to destroy our own lives, our children's lives, and all mankind, but we shall also have the power to prevent such tur- moil, chaos, and destruction, and to build toward a new world in which peace, security, and understanding prevails. The hope of tomorrow is our challenge of today. Page Eighteen SIXTH ROW: D. Davenport, L, Shouldice, H. Lehman, G. Clark, S, Shively, F. Grindol, D. Dragoo, D. Lazarus, J. Smith, T. Anderson, A. The setting of the play was Grover's Corners, a small town in New Hampshire, in the early l900's. The play was concerned with the lives, loves and deaths of the members of two families in this town, the Gibbs and the Webbs. The play was presented in three acts-the first serving to introduce the characters and to depict a typical day in Our Town, the second portraying the love and marriage of George Gibbs and Emily Webb, and the third concerning the funeral and a period of the after-death of Emily. The play combined humorous and highly dramatic moments. Page Forty-eight FIFTH ROW: B Lines, D. Last, J. Hurley, P. Cosgrove, J. LaMont, N. Himelberger, G. Kidder, K. Harris, M. Venn, P. Coller P. Introduced into the curriculum this year, Basic Living deals with subjects that will help each of us to grow and become a better integrated part of society. Since it is o required subject, it has presented about fifteen per cent of us with problems in planning schedules. The Basic Living teachers worked with our counselors in planning a get-ocquointed party at the first of the year, which was a big success. The sophomores planned their an- nual Spring Swing with great zest, and decorated their HeavenIy I-lop with clouds and three-dimensional stars which were the first the Battle Creek High School Social Room had ever seen. Money for the dance was received from Clues collected very efficiently by the respective Basic Living treasurers. ' Guidance of the class of 5O was given by Counselors Miss Morgoret Fesing and Mr, Keith Chapman. With their able support and experience we had a very successful and en- joyable initial year at Battle Creek High School. Beginning the course in February, the students first learned highway instructions, following the manipulation of the automobile and its various parts. The class is most interesting, and certainly one which will develop in the near future. Sheet music, lack Frosts and autumn colors :idorned the gaily decorated Social Room the eve of the Fall Frolic, an annual party, given by the Daughters of Liberty. The girl-date-boy informal dance was held on November 5, with Bob Shinberg's orchestra from Michigan State college. Spring fever was stimulated this year by a smart style show, given by the Daughters ot Liberty in March, Chic clothes were worn by student models, with emphasis in latest styles. This activity was sponsored by o local store. Feature Another added attraction ot Central this year is the classroom of Mr. Richards in B-l2. All vocal groups meet in the roam, and all time is spent strictly on music. Through several contributions and benefits, the vocal groups have festooned this room with drapes and rugs, and it certainly has a change toward the new look. The Sophomore study hall this year is headed by Miss Fesing and Mr, Chapman, This hour is supposed to be devoted to studying but who can blame you if you engage in a few friendly talks? Of course, there are rules to follow and the majority do get their work done here. The friendliness of Miss Fesing and good humor of Mr. Chapman make this ci pleasant room to be in whether you are a sophomore, junior, or senior. This year many new subjects have been in- troduced to the students at Central. One of the mast progressive of these subjects is the Basic Living course which every sophomore is re- quired to take. The Faculty has decided that a study of the family in modern societyg of mental and physical healthg and every day so- cial problems would greatly benefit the students who ore looking for the answers to these problems common to everyone. The Bearcat cagers averaged just slightly over 4O points per game, while their opponents averaged slightly over 48. Two of the games were outstanding: their 45-3l trimming of Ann Arbor and their 56-55 defeat at the hands of Jackson, who finished their season by taking the 5-A and State title. The Jackson tilt showed the Bearcat talent which had been hidden all season, a combina- tion of superb passing and fine shooting. From there on the Bearcats were a threat to any team. Dave Hurley scored fifteen points and was closely followed by Galen Newton with thirteen.
