The solution of these problems will spell success or failure for democracy. Never in our country's history has there been a greater need to train youth to fulfill their responsibilities as intelligent thinking citi- zens. We need a citizenry that can reflect and act in terms of world problems, relationships, and peace for all peoples. Through curricular and extracurricular programs, Battin has pro- vided the background necessary for understanding world issues, has furnished opportunities for developing the art of intelligent leader- ship, and has developed appreciation of the spiritual and cultural values of our heritage. lf you are to have a new and better world for yourself and your posterity, it rests with you to take a part in its making. Apply, with judgment, the basic principles you have learned to the vital questions of the day, be tolerant, respectful, courteous. Have a high regard for integrity, justice, and honor and practice the Colden Rule in all things, Do unto others as you would have others do unto you. Principal. DEDICATION In the imparting of her knowledge, in the aiding of many students to en- rich their lives and to de- velop theircharacter, Miss Marie Hughes has worked diligently and faithfully. We dedicate this Red and White to her with sincere gratitude. X i MEMORIAM To the memory of our classmate, Madeline Buck- ley, who, as one of us, typified the average Battin student in graciousness, friendliness, and sincerity. We, in remembrance of her, will strive toward the highest levels in life. - l H Ml Miss Helen G. Paulmenn Miss Helen V. Decker ' l I H3 5. Summer skidded to an abrupt end. Mournfully, brief shorts and briefer bathing suits, bright dirndl skirts and gay peasant blouses, that cute summer dress that HE liked and those darling straps we know as shoes were relinquished to mothballs. ln turn, the mothballs relin- quished long sweaters, sharp skirts, bobby sox and flopping loafers essential to the Belles of Battin! Lowly 'Sophs' were distinguished from the worthy upperclass- men by rustling paper bags, frilly little aprons, and painfully bewil- dered expressions. A dusting job was done on inkless pens, pointless pencils and battered books for the first day of school which witnessed the chatter of one thousand three hundred and thirteen girls bubbling over with tales of the summer's escapades. Pink slips, yellow slips, white slips, red slips, green slips, purple slips, plaid slips loops, pardon the slipll bestowed upon each girl a delightful case of writer's cramps. Sched- ules were compared with those of our best friends and when new teachers were introduced for some unknown reason there was a definite surplus of aspiring artists. Halls plastered with campaign signs, heated campaign speeches, and frenzied campaign managers, all of which led to the class election. Lily-white arms were bared for trickling alcohol and THE PATCH! Tragedy struck the Seniors when the juniors captured the volley- ball championship. This year, dear old Chris Columbus discovered America on the wrong day-Saturday! So, we were deprived of an annual day of freedom. Penny banks were robbed to help fill the familiar Red Cross boxes. The dreaded evening, Parents' Night, arrived and the awful truth was revealed to harassed parents by harassed-er teachers. Football, this year's unspoken subject, was the theme of Battin's first all-school dance, the motto of which was- l walk on my feet, tool Falling leaves and falling faces signified the close of the first marking period and the end of autumn. . The White Tower perhaps? Feminine backs were polka-dotted with well-aimed snow balls. The delightful Elizabeth winter had arrived. With it came woolies, boots, scarfs, mittens and stocking-caps. Let the best man win was the motto for the noble contest between the strong-armed faculty and the weak-kneed students. Guess who won the volleyball struggle! Eager basketballians replaced the volleyball players. Pass it here! and shoot to kill! were cries heard by many. Notes of gratefulness were struck by the presentation of the Thanksgiving Program. However, ungrateful Betsytown turkeys didn't strut quite so proudly after November 28th. ln fact, shorn of their feathers and resting comfortably in the well-filled tummies of a bevy of Battinites, they didn't strut at all! Christmas Formal worries such as: will-the-flowers match my gown?g oh, my hair is a wrecklg will he have the car? were momen- tarily forgotten when a spellbound audience beheld the splendor of the beautiful Christmas Pageant which will not be easily forgotten. The worries were again resumed with prayers to the weatherman. In spite of john L. Lewis' frustrated attempt to extinguish the bright lights of gaily trimmed evergreens, the twelve days of Christ- mas rolled smoothly down the hill, But what a job getting back up again after a rollicking New Year's celebration. Valentine's Day and all its sentiments followed on the heels of dear ol' Abe Lincoln's Birthday. Will you be my Valentine? . . . Another Happy Birthday to You was sung to the father of our country, George Washington. Everyone, particularly students, is always glad these people had birthdays. lUlterior motives you knowll An appearance of new fashions meant old winter was on his grumbling way out and sprightly spring on her happy way in. -! Oh yesg the season when jeffersonians' thoughts turned to baseball and Battinites' to new bonnets. A certain block on South Street took on a Broadway sheen for the greatest production of the year. lt was stupendous! Magnificent tool No one had to go to Ebbets Field to see a good ball game. Across the street from B.H.S. was far enough. The sports-minded girls swung some mean bats and so did the brawny members of the faculty. Another unnecessary trip was one to Sherwood Forest. Many a lass imbedded shafts in the gold of a target. Back across the street, in the auditorium, weighty problems were solved by debating debaters who debated debates. Perhaps there was a future lexicographer if you must know, it is a writer of dictionaries, participating in the annual Sophomore Speling Bea - er - Spelling Bee, that is. The days were flying now and when the outstanding students were received into the National Honor Society, a scant three months remained to the school year. Our Hearts Were Young and Cay during Music Week. The dear, old high school nearly burst with song. A blessing upon all Seniors came in the form of you've got it- the PRlVlLECESl On Senior Day none could mistake the mighty upperclassmen for juniors or Sophs. Not when the Seniors were so distinguished looking. Excitement ran high when the Awards Assembly rolled around. At last deserving students received public acclaim. Prom chatter and data filled many minds instead of you-know- what and it was a wonderful affair. The Trip -need any more be said? Happy but yet sad was Class Night. Remember? Thoughts of Battinellas then turned to a young man's fancy and that gala event-the Senior Prom. Commencement came and the somber Class of '47 turned to the future. Spring would soon be leaving and another summer approaching. F . Tonight I am bringing you news of a great discovery. The eminent scientist, Dr. Harriet Gallagher, has announced the comple- tion of a new drug which at last will smash the terrible career of the common cold. WASHINGTON: Pearl Cohen, American ambassador to the Moon, reports that conditions for further colonization are favorable. Noted explorer, joan Stein, has agreed to lead an expedition to in- vestigate the other side of the satellite, Moon. Her staff will include Ruth Klawunn as Chief Medical Adviser, Sophie Majcher to record all data, and Helen Kocielek to pilot the daring journey. NEW YORK: The World Symphony Orchestra under the direc- tion of Susan Brailove will open at Carnegie Hall next week, featuring piano soloist Inga-Lill Rosander, and Miss Ruth Lebau, soprano, who is making her debut in New York. The highlight of the evening is expected to be the introduction of a new Piano Concerto by Lena Schwartz, composer who dazed the world with her Strawberry Sonata, an ultra-modern note in the music world. ELIZABETH, N. I.: This morning's Noon, edited by crusader Carol Waldman, contained the startling expose of infamous Boss Kelly's soft heart. It has been proven that Kelly secretly donated five thousand dollars of the City Treasury to the Manganelli fund for a new Battin High School. The old one, says Superintendent of Schools Sally Vernon, is still in good shape, but apparently Manganelli and Kelly are not of the same opinion. EXCLUSIVE: The bloody disaster of the burning of the Deming Art Theatre in Paris has caused a loss in millions to producer Barbara Toker since it resulted in the final closing of Life with Grandfather, just entering its eleventh year. Glamorous heroine Eugenie Wagner Class rophecy is being treated for burns by surgeon Ann Ward, but judy Mandel, who played Grandmother, escaped through a second story window. Evelyn Burdett and Marie Verlengeri, designers, are mourning the loss of priceless creations in scenery and costumes. NEW YORK: The glamorous Conunder models arrived yesterday at the Dostal Air Field amid rioting and uproar. Police reinforce- ments had to be called to calm down the six thousand clamoring suitors who swarmed the gates. Cover girls Allie Campbell, Betty Dillensnyder, Betty Billerbeck, Elaine Drosdick, Lorraine Paul and Emily Gransee seemed to be the center of admiration. A EXCLUSIVE: Barbara Ann jones and Greta Epstein, leading artists in the modern dance world have founded the Modern Dance Guild of the World, to lend aid to feeble-footed performers who can no longer dance for their dinners. SOUND--Fanfare PRUE DREARSOME: And here are my predictions of things to come. PREDICTION NUMBER ONE-SPORTS: The forthcoming plan- etary Olympics will reveal startling new discoveries in the athletic field. l predict that dark horse, Lois Lesnik, will sprint to victory in the IOOO yard dash, Mueller's infallible serve will baffle all competi- tors and win the day for the undefeated volleyball eleven coached by Grace Hazellg and Mary Kozolak and strong arm Shirley Reese will surpass all opponents at discus throwing. PREDICTION NUMBER TWO-SCIENCE: I predict that the Strassman Publishing Company's newly published explanation of a daring theory by Margaret Green will soon remove Einstein completely out of circulation. y PREDICTION NUMBER THREE-GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS: Secretary of Peace Evelyn Geiger has has a serious dispute with the president over our foreign policy. Miss Geiger is in violent opposition to the treaty proposed by Secretary of State Roslyn Stein for a trade alliance with Russia. Therefore, I predict that Miss Geiger will re- sign and will be replaced by Elise Siess, Senator from New jersey.
