THE FIRST TIME YOU. • Tried to Cheek In? Dressed Out for P.E.? I remember the first time I dressed out in P.F.. It was disgusting. The stupid baggy blue contraption had elastic in the legs, no sleeves and snaps down the front. Okay girls, dress out and line up in the gym.” What we weren't prepared for was the startling reality that we were sharing the gym with another class. Making the grand entrance into a gym full of snickering boys was one of the most traumatic experiences that I ever encountered. Probably everything that could possibly happen in P.E. to humiliate anyone happened to me. I couldn’t do the sidc-straddlc-hop, my knee socks wouldn’t stay up, and then the physical fitness tests. Who cares how far you Can throw a softball or how fast you can pick up erasers? So you get a little patch if your scores are in the eightieth percentile. I wouldn’t have anything to put the patch on anyway. So here I sit, out of P.E., patchlcss and just as out of shape as ever. When a student is late, he has many choices as to which approach to take to get in class. Unfortunately, the Attendance Office Staff will believe none of them, thus making it even more difficult to procure the sacred Excused Slip.” One might use one of the more conventional excuses — car broke down, missed bus, or slept late. The more creative student might roll around in a ditch, put a mackerel in his pocket, and gurgle upon entering the office. Or for the dramatic effect, one might breathlessly run into the office exclaiming. Four young hoodlums stole my tires while I was on the interstate.” You should never forget that checking in is a somewhat precarious situation; therefore, your excuse must be infallible, for infallibility breeds acceptance, and acceptance is what it’s all about. Brace up. grit your teeth, and good luck!
