I remember those disgusting cherry tarts we used to have ir. the cafeteria at least twice a week. They were covered with artifi cial w-hipped cream which hid what we presumed was a glob or fake cherries mixed with a sticky syrup. They were encased in a rock-hard crust.” No one could eat more than half of one, but they were better than the iello we had on the other three days. One Friday, everyone was looking for something to do at lunch. They sat in the cafeteria listlessly talking and chasing peas around their plates. I saw a guy standing in line w-ho actually bought two of the tarts. I recognized him by his reputation as one of the clumsiest people in school. As he left the line, his past caught up with him, he tripped, hurling the tart grenades across the room and striking two girls One was somewhat upset at her new white-now-red blouse, and took the half-tart from her plate and neatly dropped it on the sprawling grenade thrower. Suddenly, the area within a f if teen j foot radius of the combatants came alive with tart projectiles The ensuing battle sent about a dozen bodies to the of f ice. It was. however, the last day we lud tarts. went to a dance, and didn’t? used a blow dryer? dressed out in a PE class? fell out of a desk? tried to check out? were hassled because your pants were too short? forgot an assignment, locker key. pencil, etc.? went parking? liked someone, and he actually liked you? 6 THE FIRST TIME YOU. • Tried to Cheek In? Dressed Out for P.E.? I remember the first time I dressed out in P.F.. It was disgusting. The stupid baggy blue contraption had elastic in the legs, no sleeves and snaps down the front. Okay girls, dress out and line up in the gym.” What we weren't prepared for was the startling reality that we were sharing the gym with another class. Making the grand entrance into a gym full of snickering boys was one of the most traumatic experiences that I ever encountered. Probably everything that could possibly happen in P.E. to humiliate anyone happened to me. I couldn’t do the sidc-straddlc-hop, my knee socks wouldn’t stay up, and then the physical fitness tests. Who cares how far you Can throw a softball or how fast you can pick up erasers? So you get a little patch if your scores are in the eightieth percentile. I wouldn’t have anything to put the patch on anyway. So here I sit, out of P.E., patchlcss and just as out of shape as ever. When a student is late, he has many choices as to which approach to take to get in class. Unfortunately, the Attendance Office Staff will believe none of them, thus making it even more difficult to procure the sacred Excused Slip.” One might use one of the more conventional excuses — car broke down, missed bus, or slept late. The more creative student might roll around in a ditch, put a mackerel in his pocket, and gurgle upon entering the office. Or for the dramatic effect, one might breathlessly run into the office exclaiming. Four young hoodlums stole my tires while I was on the interstate.” You should never forget that checking in is a somewhat precarious situation; therefore, your excuse must be infallible, for infallibility breeds acceptance, and acceptance is what it’s all about. WATKINS Aspirations Propel Juniors Into Action With organization and optimism, the Class of 1978 united to meet the academic and social challenges of BRHS. Although required courses dominated their schedules, juniors actively participated in opera workshop, drama productions, ballet, engineering, radio and television. Junior class officers and prom committee members initiated several activities to raise funds for the social event of the year, the Junior-Senior Prom. Having as its theme Tonight’s the Night, juniors, seniors, and their dates were entertained by Papa Joe and Riverboat. 114 Acrce, Donnie Adkins, Allison Atkins. In a society which placed so much emphasis on beauty. Charlie’s Angels” became the most successful venture of the season. Starring Farrah Fawcett-Majors, Kate Jackson, and Jac-lyn Smith, the episodes featured the three female investigators in crime-solving ventures for a boss they never saw Though the show lacked taste, our weekly viewing kept it in the top ten. The Gong Show” premiered as a daytime variety show” in May and caught on full speed in the fall with a night time-version and a regular panel. Featuring amateur acts, the show was a critical folly, but publically successful. While there were several popular shows remaining from previous seasons, movies were the big attraction. Gone with the Wind,” the 1939 classic shown in two parts, drew over seventy million viewers. Captains and the Kings” was also successful, but lacked the power of its predecessor. Rich Man, Poor Man.” It was. however, Roots which w-as the most astounding epic of the year. Based on Alex Haley’s best-seller, it traced Haley's heritage, but was looked upon by many as a genealogical prototype. Graced with an all-star cast, its viewing audience topped even Gone with the Wind.” Fred Silverman put it best when he said. T.V will be better next season.” Movies Made Money The motion picture industry had a commercially successful year, and the output was memorable. Marathon Man.” a slick tale of Nazi outbreak in modern America, starred Dustin Hoffman and was the first to begin the wave of success. Woody Allen’s The Front was less successful, but its talc of Communism during the 50’s was powerful. Only Rocky” pleased all moviegoers. The talc of a down-and-out boxer who was chosen to fight in a grandiose meet was not new to movie buffs, but a new actor, Sylvester Stallone. made it work, and Rocky” was acclaimed the Best Picture of the Year. Network,” a dcvastatingly accurate account of a television network’s procedures, was one of the year’s biggest hits. Of its cast, three were awarded Oscars — Faye Dunnaway (Best Actress), Peter Finch (Best Actor), and Beatrice Straight (Best Supporting Actress). Old movies were also box office attractions as Hollywood revived A Star Is Born” and King Kong.” It w-as indeed a rare season — the movie industry made money, and movie goers were entertained. 146 ---------- BUSINESS Join the y§V9 S nee.
