Sergeant at Arms. 14T 1972 Fricassee Staff A long year's work on putting together another outstanding yearbook began last summer for the Fricassee staff, when sixteen of its members, with faculty sponsor Mrs. Jones, visited the Taylor Publishing Company yearbook conference in Monroe. The group returned with a trophy for superior planning. By the time school started, the work of selling ads was almost over; the taking of pictures and planning of pages began in earnest. The last pages were mailed to the publisher before the end of February. Ihen began the long, anxious wait for the finished product. Not long before they finished their trying job, the staff gathered at the lakeside. Because of the extremely cold weather, no one jumped in after all. Above: Paul Miller snapped a few pictures. 145 Bulldog Band Had Although the football team had a fairly unsuccessful season, the marching band had a very successful one. They marched in almost every half-time show and combined with the Boosters and Ili-Step-pcrs to present a spectacular performance for the Homecoming Queen and her Court. Equally successful was the concert band, which performed at the district band festival, presented a spring concert, and toured a portion of Florida during the spring. A band consisting of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors was formed to play for the seniors' graduation ceremony. The band also broke into soloists and small ensembles and played in the Solo-Fnsemble Festival in Hammond, La. All bands were conducted by William B. Poche, an excellent conductor and one of the finest musicians in the state. Hill, presented William Gibson's drama The Miracle Worker on November 10, 1971. The play, depicting a hardpressed teacher's efforts to bring her blind, deaf charge out of a wordless world of isolation and despair, was warmly received by a near-capacity audience. At final curtain the players were awarded a standing ovation. Excellent in the exacting roles of the handicapped Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan were Jackie Jones and Terry Wechsler. At a meeting prior to the trip, Jackie jones presented the story of the opera to the members while Mr. Guy W. Johnson and Mrs. Marjorie Blocker sang several excerpts from the play. Chaperons for the trip were Mrs. Cleo Jones, sponsor of the club, Mr. Carl Wilkins, Mrs. Delores Schmidt, and Mrs. Marjorie Blocker. The group enjoyed coffee and donuts at the French Market while in New Orleans. The French Club, an organization to perpetuate the learning of the French language and customs, operated under a new sponsor, Mrs. Cleo Jones. Not shown: Joe Dean. 189 Ye Ole The BfcHS football team started off its season in the annual STAMA Jamboree. This year for the first time the 4-AAAA was divided into two Subdistricts. BRHS fell into Subdistrict B, where they ended up 4th. The first game was a hard fighting battle in which we lost to Broadmoor, 19-0. Next the Dogs faced the tough Redemptorist Wolves. After holding them scoreless for the entire first half the dogs fell to their foes 13-0. The best defensive player was Lddie Crews, and the best offensive player was Eddie Wren. On this page in above pictures fcllis hits Gremetlion, (above right) Durrett runs for extra yardage, and (right) VanNorman eludes Panthers. 190 Shall Rise Again The Dogs were forced to travel to Glen Oaks to face their next opponent. The Dogs scored their first touchdown of the year with a pass from Ellis to Melvin George. PAT kick good by Dean but the Dogs fell to the Panthers 35-7. Next week the Dogs went against their former coach, Leon McGraw. The Mean Green held the Indians passing attack to 0 yards, but their strong running attack led to a 23-7 victory over the Dogs. Tailback Issac Coston seized the opening kickoff and ran it back 80 yarcJs as the Dogs got their 1st victory of the season. The next time the Dogs got the ball they drove 62 yards for the 2nd TD. The final score was 14-8. Next the Dogs went to East Ascension where both teams were held scoreless in the 1st half. In the 3rd quarter Eddie Crews set up a 23 yard field goal by Joe Dean as the Dogs took a 3-0 lead. The Spartan offense then proved too much for the Dogs as they took a 12-3 victory. Below: Wren, Gremillion, and Fountain closed in. 192 And Then Bit Back I he Dogs then got their second victory with a 28-7 win over McKinley. In the 1st quarter, Ellis led the Dogs to score twice, once on a 24 yard pass to Gremillion and again on a one yard run. Later in the third quarter Coston scrambled 73 yards on a punt return to give the Dogs a 21-0 lead. Phil Lan-clas recovered a fumble on the Panther 35 to set up the final TD. Joe Dean kicked all 4 extra points as the Bulldogs completely dominated the game. Homecoming drew many fans to Olympia stadium as the fighting Bulldogs'went down to a determined Lee High team. The dogs scored in the final quarter as Ellis hit Melvin George for a 37 yard TD pass. Dean added the extra point. The final score was 20-7. 193 The Gallant Doc In the Catholic High game the Dogs were plagued with mistakes. The Bulldogs launched a successful 64 yard drive in the 4th quarter as Fllis found Fife open in the end zone. Dean PAT was wide. Paul Probst intercepted a Uter pass and zipped 90 yards for an apparent Bulldog T.D. The play was called back and ruled off-setting penalties, as the Bears took a 21-6 victory. The 4-AAAA champions were next in line for the Dogs. Trojan QB Mark Haile was continuously damaged throughout the game by his former teammates. Bottom Right: Crews received TD pass. 194 Went Down Fighting The last game of the season was a playoff with Scotlandville. The Bulldogs dominated the game with a 14-0 victory. Ellis hit Melvin George in the 1st quarter for a 7-0 lead. David Brewer is credited with 2 interceptions and Eddie Crews with a 36 yard T.D. pass from Ellis. Tor the gallant Bulldogs it was a long hard-fought season, jim Gremillion made 1st team all district and Eddie Crews made 2nd team all district. With dedicated team preparation, the Dogs ended up with a 3-7 season. Despite the loss of the graduating seniors, the amount of varsity experience possessed by next year's team will be a great asset.
