SotnetMC Sfeect C For the last ten years the names of Miss Millet and the Fricassee have been so closely connected that it was almost impossible to think of one without the other. It was not surprising, then, that in early fall the 1965 Fricassee staff voted to dedicate this year's book to Miss Millet. Our sense of loss upon her retirement from the sponsorship served to affirm our decision, for we felt that it would be especially appropriate to say Thank you for her many years of service. Perhaps some of our readers do not know of Miss Millet's work as both teacher and yearbook sponsor. No one will ever appreciate her as those who have been privileged to have her as a teacher or those who have spent hours working on the Fricassee with her. It is our hope that this dedication will show to her at least a small part of this appreciation which we all feel. Occi SxcAottye Student DEREK FELS Though the wail of bagpipes is usually associated with Scotland and kilts, to this year's students at B.R.H.S. it will always bring to mind a fair-haired lad from New Zealand, Derek Fels. Call it superstition, but who could ever be sure that his bagpipe playing at the football games, his Maori war cries at the pep meetings, and his green teki charm constantly hanging on his wrist didn't bring us that extra boost of luck and spirit to lead our way to the State triple A Championship. No one could wish more happiness and success upon Derek than the B.R.H.S. student body. We all hope that his year here with us has been enjoyable for him and that he will take home with him wonderful memories. As you must leave us now, Derek, we want you to know that in our hearts you have won a special place. ?k ecoy«Utio t MISS REED The Fricassee Staff wishes to recognize Miss Reed's loyalty to B.R.H.S. She has been teaching home economics to our girls for forty-one years. The value of her devotion to her students could never be expressed in a few words. Not only has she guided her girls, but has always kept the department open to all clubs and activities in need of assistance. GARY GINN Gary was a very friendly, likable person. He was very fond of the out-of-doors, especially fishing and crayfishing. He loved cars and was always ready to help someone with his hot rod . Gary was mischievous as any young boy might be and he liked all sports. On many week-ends and after school you could see him playing ball around Bel-Fair Elementary School. He was very mechanically minded. He had a great weakness for motor bikes and cycles. It was on his cycle fhat he met his dreadful fate. Our homeroom and all his many friends greatly miss this young man. Coach McGraw T “T ta e 0p'ue €cC The first step in making friends is being Look you, there is humor in all things and the truest philosophy is that which teaches us to find it and make the most of it. —Gilbert and Sullivan i 7 6c yCad Ct c Because it gives you the chance to love, and to work, and to play, and to look up at the stars. B.R.H.S.—13 De La Salle—0 Baton Rouge High used a crazy defense and two spectacular scoring plays—quarterback Joe Womack's 44-yard second period pass to end Roy Lively and fullback George Bevan's 36-yard fourth quarter bolt to defeat De La Salle, 13-0. Princeton Bardwell, one of our defensive stalwarts along with Mike Smith, Eddie Ivey, and Charles Browning, intercepted Mart's pass to halt the deepest De La Salle penetration. Baton Rouge also claimed two of De La Salle's five fumbles. One recovery being made by Jimmy Rutledge and another by Charles Browning. Greg Eaton kicked both PAT's, but only one proved to be good. De La Salle led Baton Rouge in first downs by 8-6, but the Canines were ahead in total offense 168 yards to the Cavalier's 137 yards. The game was played in City Park Stadium in New Orleans. Harrell around end! 113 B.R.H.S.—7 Lafayette—0 The Bulldogs got the biggest of several breaks in the second quarter when- Lloyd Giblin recovered a Lion fumble at the Lafayette 25. Six plays later George Bevan, listed as doubtful because of injuries sustained in the De La Salle game the previous week, plunged over from the one for the only touchdown of the game and Greg Eaton booted the conversion which gave the Canines their 7-0 margin. The Bulldogs concentrated on the running game and used the pass sparingly. The ball carrying, which produced 114 yards, was shared by seven men. Joe Womack was the leader with 24 yards, Russell Marino gained 21, Bevan 19, Jack Harrell 17, Princeton Bardwell 14, Chuck Hill 12, and Mike Cox 7. Womack attempted only four passes, connecting with end Ralph Wells, for 13 on the first play of the touchdown drive after earlier hitting Harrell for minus one on a screen attempt. This victory was the second straight for B.R.H.S. and the loss was the first for Lafayette, a 19-13 victory over Terrebonne. Coile knock off defender Bulldog fighting again t lee 114 Bevan fakes off on another long sprint Sevan on a long gainer against Istrourra B.R.H.S.—18 Bolton-7 The B.R.H.S. Bulldogs spotted Bolton's previously undefeated Bears seven points in Alexandria before coming from behind to chalk up their victory of the season, 18-7. The second-ranked Triple-A team made good use of two fumble recoveries and three intercepted passes in defeating the Bears. In the end, it was the tough defense and hard blocking of the Bulldog line that provided the difference. Senior fullback George Bevan led the B.R.H.S. running attack by carrying 12 times for 85 yards and two TD's. His first score was a 52 yd. run off tackle. This was the spark which led our Bulldogs to victory. The other B.R.H.S. touchdown came on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Joe Womack to halfback Russell Marino. On the first play of the final quarter, Bulldog end Tommy Witherspoon intercepted a Bear pass on the Bolton 28 and returned it to the one. Bevan banged over on the first play. The clock was about the only thing that stopped the Bulldogs in the second half. The coaches were well pleased with the show our boys made. Bennett and other dump the opposition 115 Marino around end Who's got the ball? Witherspoon dumps the opposite for a loss B.R.H.S.— 0 Broadmoor-0 We have no excuse, no alibis. We just got beat by a better ball club. Those were the words of Coach Ray (Coon) Porta after the Bulldogs had failed in their District 3-AAA debut and their No. 1 State AAA ranking in losing 6-0. The Bulldogs made many fine efforts and came very close to scoring several times, but were stopped by the Buc's. This defeat, however, didn't discourage the Bulldogs. They came right back the next week and beat Bogalusa, and then went on to take the District 3-AAA crown and the State Championship. 116 Chapman around end B.R.H.S.—20 Bogalusa—12 Baton Rouge High's Bulldogs gave Bogalusa its first big test of the season in Bogalusa, and the Lumberjacks flunked. The defensive minded Bulldogs of Coach Ray Porta overwhelmed the Jacks offensively with power up the middle, gaining 306 yards rushing. They also went one-for-one passing for 13 yards. Bogalusa got both of its touchdowns in the first quarter. BRHS got one marker between the two Bogalusa six pointers, on a spectacular 37-yard run by Jack Harrell. Mark Bennett converted. After Bogalusa's second TD the Bulldogs controlled the ball most of the remainder of the game. Quarterback Joe Womack put the Canines ahead again in the second quarter with a 7-yard end sweep which climaxed a 66-yard march. Bennett added the PAT and the Bulldogs led 14-12 going into the half-time intermission. The Bulldogs scored the clincher in the third period, driving 72 yards after taking the kickoff. It was Harrell who scored, going over from the three with 6:21 remaining in the third period. Final score-BRHS-20 Bogalusa—12 Big effort Marino dodges tackier B.R.H.S.—7 Catholic High—0 The third time was the charm for Baton Rouge High. After being stopped twice earlier in enemy territory, the Bulldogs drove 52 yards on their third thrust for the TD which defeated the Catholic High Golden Bears 7-0 before a homecoming crowd of 5,000 at Memorial Stadium. George Bevan, BRHS's leading rusher with 61 yards, plunged over from 1 foot out in the secqnd period for the game's only TD and Mark Bennett kicked the extra point. The Bulldogs completely dominated the first half, getting 8 first downs and 116 yards rushing while holding the Bruins to 1 first down and 16 yards. Coach Reuben Ruiz's Bears, unable to stop the repeated stabs of Harrell and Bevan, never really got much opportunity to show their offense until the second half. BRHS, trying to kill the clock and protect its margin, offered a mild final threat when it went from the CHS 38—after taking over on downs— to the Bruin 16 in the last series of the game. 117 Baker—0 B.R.H.S.—34 The BRHS Bulldogs, racking up a total of 354 yards total offense to the Buffaloes' 32 yards, won another game which made us 7-1 for the season. The Bulldogs passed around scoring honors to various members of the team with George Bevan getting one from the 3-yard line. Jack Chapman another from the 5, Princeton Bardwell cashing in another from the 6, Chuck Hill garnering the fourth from the 1-yard line and the final score coming on a 26-yard pass from quarterback Johnny Palazotta to Greg Eaton from the Baker 26. When the game-ending whistle blew, the 'Dogs were on the Buff 1-yard line driving for another TD, but the time needed was denied us and we settled for the 34-0 victory. The Giblin twins, Floyd and Lloyd, picked off three Buff interceptions, two of which set the stage for Bulldog touchdowns. What' up. Coach? B.R.H.S.—31 Lee-6 Baton Rouge High put two TDs on the score-board in the first quarter and then one each in the next three for its best offensive showing of the season in bombing the Lee High Rebels, 31-6, in a District 3-AAA game at Memorial Stadium. The defensive-minded Bulldogs yielded the long Confederate marker in the closing seconds of the second period when the Rebs employed a bit of trickery that bamboozled the BRHS deep men. Touchdowns for the Bulldogs were made as follows: 21-yard pass and run from Joe Womack to Russell Marino. Bennett kicked. George Bevan on a 1-foot plunge. Kick failed. Princeton Bardwell on a 1-yard plunge. Kick failed. Joe Womack on a 4-yard run. Kick failed. Lloyd Giblin on a 10-yard run. Kick failed. In total offense, BRHS led with 272 yards to Lee's 152 yards. Rutledge nail ball carrier 118 Hill bools one B.R.H.S.-13 Glen Oaks-7 Baton Rouge High capitalized on two big defensive breaks to come from behind and defeat previously unbeaten Glen Oaks, 13 7, in an important District 3-AAA game at Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs spotted the Black Panthers 7 points on Ronnie Reid's 64-yard TD run and Robert Di-dier's kick in the first period, but turned a second quarter pass interception by Princeton Bardwell and a third period fumble recovery by George Bevan into touchdown drives which punctured the Panthers' hopes of wrapping up the league title. Jack Chapman used a 4-yard end sweep for the first BRHS score and Bevan bowled over defenders in a 2-yard jab at left guard in the third. Mark Bennett kicked for the extra point after the final marker. At the end it looked as if Glen Oaks was going to come up with one of its patented thrilling finishes which had pulled it out of the hole in three previous games. The Panthers kept the 8,000 fans on the edge of their seats with a drive from their own 9 to the BRHS 49. But Bardwell intercepted another Mickey Bergeron pass with only 5 seconds showing on the new scoreboard clock and the Bulldogs ran out the clock. B.R.H.S.—13 Istrouma—0 Before 10,000 shivering fans in the annual cross-town rivalry battle at Memorial Stadium, the BRHS Bulldogs beat the Istrouma Indians 13-0. With the win, our Bulldogs took their second straight District 3-AAA championship. Our Bulldogs made 211 yards on total offense to Istrouma's 92 yards. George Bevan broke loose for 37 yards and a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter. Mark Bennett kicked the PAT, giving us a 7-0 lead. Bevan then put the game safely out of reach by racing 49 yards for another marker with just a little more - than 2 minutes remaining. Bennett's kick was wide. Only three passes were attempted. End Floyd Giblin played an important role by intercepting the only two passes thrown by Istrouma quarterback Danny Young and BRHS's quarterback Joe Womack completed a 10-yarder to end Frank Willett. 119 Womack evade tackier B.R.H.S.—6 Woodlawn—0 Fullback George Bevan blocked and recovered a punt, led a 49-yard drive and then rammed over from the 1 to give the Bulldogs a 6-0 victory over Woodlawn of Shreveport in a state AAA first-round play-off game in Memorial Stadium. For a long while, it looked as if the visiting Knights and the host Canines might fight to a scoreless stand off on Memorial Stadium's muddy turf and that the issue would have to be settled by first downs. The visitors had a 6-4 edge at the time. Bevan came up with 2 crucial fourth down gains in what turned out to be a 49-yard, 14-play drive for the TD. BRHS faced fourth and one at the Knight's 21 and later at the enemy 8. Bevan powered his way through for 4 yards the first time and 2 yards the second. He then moved the ball to the one from the five—during a driving rain-and then slipped over guard for the TD with 5:34 remaining. Mark Bennett's kick for the extra point was blocked, but as things turned out, the Bulldogs didn't need it. Bennett broke up a Woodlawn threat when he intercepted a Frey Prather pass at the Bulldog 36 and ran it back to the 46. BRHS then stalled for the next 1:45 to take the victory. B.R.H.S.—20 Holy Cross-6 Baton Rouge High avenged 1963's most humiliating loss and moved to the semi-finals of the State Triple-S playoffs, all at the same time when it beat Holy Cross 20-6 in New Orleans. BRHS had it sewed up with a 12-yard Joe Womack-to-Jack Chapman touchdown pass in the second period; an 18-yard run with a fumble recovery by Tommy Witherspoon in the third quarter, and a 2-yard run by fullback George Bevan in the final quarter. The Tigers needed but six plays to finally erase their goose egg. Rappold went for 14 on a draw pass and Duhe faked a pass and stepped outside for 14 more. A 20-yard advance on a flipback from Duhe to Rappold to Duhe put the ball on the Bulldog 30. Duhe then passed to Smith on the 15 and the Tiger threat weaved into the open and scored. Duhe kicked wide on the point try and the score stayed 20-6. 120 George Bevan Chuck Hill Jack Harrell Glen Lorio Joe Womack Floyd Giblin B.R.H.S.—14 East Jefferson—7 Defensive back Lloyd Giblin raced 42 ya ds with an intercepted pass to set the stage for George Bevan's second touchdown of the game as Baton Rouge High's mighty canines edged East Jefferson 14-7, in a Triple-A state semifinal contest at Memorial Stadium. Baton Rouge High actually could have won without its last seven points. Since the Bulldogs led in first downs 10-6, they would have been declared the winner in the event of a tie. In total offense, BRHS led with 199 yards to East Jefferson's 170 yards. East Jefferson could manage only four plays in the first quarter as the Dogs controlled, the ball most of the period. The Bulldogs and Warriors scored in the second quarter, with East Jefferson's lone score coming one minute before the half. Both teams came out fired up after the half, and the third quarter was strictly a defensive affair. With less than seven minutes left in the game, Giblin made his beautiful interception return to put the BRHS offense in gear. On third down from the one, Bevan crashed into paydirt to give BRHS its 12th win of the season in 13 games and third in a row for us since entering the state playoffs. Mark Bennett kicked our extra points after each TD. 121 Russell Marino Lloyd Giblin Princeton Bardwell BATON ROUGE HIGH 6 Sulfur 0 Some people might say we've been very lucky, but I truthfully believe these boys earned the State Championship. Those were the words of proud Ray (Coon) Porta after'the Dogs marched 72 yards in the fourth quarter for the touchdown which gave them a 6-0 victory over Sulphur and the State Triple-A title. Chapman started with a two yard gain around end. Then Chuck Hill, a defensive stand-out all year, came up with a ten-yard gainer. Womack followed with a seven yard pass to Bevan which put the ball on the BRHS 47. Bevan then came up with a thrilling run to the Sulphur 36. Chapman followed with a run of the same type gaining 19 yards to the 17. Chapman then carried to the 13, Bevan to the 10 and Bevan again to the 7. On the next play Womack pulled a belly fake to Bevan up the middle, kept and went wide around left end. Before Sulphur discovered he had the ball, Womack had stepped in for the touchdown. 122 Graves Thomas 123 Ann Corbett Sonny Childers Jane Pierce Don Elbourne Suzette England Dorian Heromen Claudette Kimble Danny Sevan Touchdown 124 Danny, Sonny, Dorian, Don Jane, Ann, Suzette, Claudette Cheerleaders are elected in the spring of each year.
