Through the many years you have been principal of Baton Rouge High School, you have been just that to all of us, the generations of boys and girls who have comprised your student body. Our guide - the high standards and ideals you have ever held before us by,precept and example, have taught us what real men and women should be, and will serve as the standards and ideals we will carry with is through life. Our mentor -- you have counseled with us in our many problems, none of them too small, none of us too insignificant to receive your full time and attention. Wise guidance and real understanding have you given un- stintingly to any of us who felt the need. You have always made us feel that we are your boys and girls and nothing has been too much trouble for you to do for us. Our friend - there isn't one of us in High School who doesn't feel the truth of that statement. We have felt your joy in our joy, your sorrow in our sorrow. You have been behind us in everything we have done, and though at times we have displeased you, we have still felt you were back of us, a true and tried friend, who wanted only what is best for us. We were snatched from junior High and thrown in high school with the equally fresh sophomores. How Baton Rouge High did impress us! How great and wonderful it was! How old we were, just think-in high school! This was the place where we would attend school until that day in the very, very distant future when we would gradu- ate. Here, in addition to learning, we would make friends, take part in sports and clubs, and gather many, many fond memories to recall at later moments. Oh, that first year! Although we were not thought to be much by the other classes, we accepted the fact that they were not able thinkers and that their con- ception of us was entirely wrong. We were freshmen in high school, BRHS, and we would raise the standards of Baton Rouge High to heights never reached before. Our class took a great interest in football and greatly enjoyed our first pep meeting. Then the fraternities and sororities issued bids and many of us became lowly pledges. We joined some of the many clubs and took an interest in fhe Student Council fwe are the first class to get through high school with an organ- ized Student Councilj. And then summer came-vacations, part-time jobs, and loafing. September brought us back to school, sophomores. No longer were we con- sidered the lowest class fwe always thought.we were the bestlj Here, we began to take a greater interest. Some of us were asked to join Key Club or Beta Club. Some were on the football and basketball teams, some were on the honor rollg some, in plays, some, leaders in fraternities, some, pledges in sororities, some, in the band, some, marching Boostersg and some, officers of clubs. We were begin- ning to take over that which was ours. That was the year of the completion of the gym, the year of the first Fricassee Ball, 'the year the Baton Rougeons were organized, and the year of the last fra- ternity and sorority Christmas and spring dances. Class History We returned to school after the vacation as juniors. That day in the far distant future seemed nearer. We were growing older and assuming more responsibility. The football, basketball, track, and baseball teams were weighted down with our names as were the clubs, Boosters, and Band. We walked or rode in the CHS parade, went on bus trips, and saw jean Chatelain elected Homecoming Queen. Our hopes rose as we tied Istrouma 20-20, only to -have them shattered by a 7-6 defeat in the District Playoff. Christmas rolled around and several of the clubs gave dances. In the true Christmas Spirit many gave gifts to Lyria Duncan, the partially blind girl who had been our classmate at Baton Rouge High. We all watched and prayed for her as the tumor grew worse and she died. We began the New Year right with a great New Year's Eve dance given by the newly-organized Dad's Club. We ate ham and turkey, wished everyone a Happy New Year, and did a very able job of ringing out the old and ringing in the new. This year, 1955, would end with us seniors. The only change in the school building was the new Student Lounge, but there were some changes in us and in the makeup of the school. jackie and Ann led us in cheers-cheers for Taylor, Brock, Rubenstein, and Kelley. Don Welsh conducted the Band, Betty Lou Scott, the Boosters. Betty Lou was elected Homecoming Queen with Pat McLin and Juanita Rathcke in the court. Gerald Walter was President of the Key Club, best in the world, having won first in the nation in the Achievement Report. Alton McVadon was President of the state FBLA. Alton, too, made all the Fricassee pictures which makes the 1954 yearbook the best yet. Will Goodell was President of Beta Club, and George Herget was President of the Student Council. As we, today's seniors, assume our respective positions in tomorrow's world, may we always apply in our daily living the principles of good citizenship taught at Baton Rouge High and ever hold her rich tradition and scholastic attainments high. Class Will We, the Senior Class of 1954, being credited with some mentality, do hereby and wherewith bequeath and bestow our first will and testament, with only the desire that our modest bequests be cherished in the coming years as we are briefly brought to mind. A Rabb-Kinchen pass scored the other. Other standouts included Hickey Porrier, Mike Marcello, Harry Rubenstein, Al Retif, and Ernest Kelly. BULLDOGS 35-BOLTON 29 Again, fullback jimmy Taylor paced the scoring attack with two touchdowns to his credit, besides a pass completed to Ernest Kelly and another score. Warren Rabbsbril- liant passing was another standout with a touchdown pass to Kelly and another to Porrier in the end zone. An able line gave full support. B.R.H.S. 19-HOLY CROSS 12 The Bulldogs delivered a crush- ing defeat to the powerful Holy Cross Tigers with a 19-12 victory. Scoring ace jimmy Taylor tallied for all 19 points. The line held back the Tigers to bring about the vic- tory, allowing them only 12 points. Earnest Kelly, jaspar Brock, and Warren Rabb provided beautiful blocking throughout. BULLDOGS O- f-TERREBONNE Zo The Terrebonne Tigers raised themselves to the top spot in the Southeastern Class AA liootball League by scoring a crushing victory over the struggling B.R,H.S, team. The Bulldogs could not seem to move against the powerful Terrebonne line and could not even manage a scoring threat. Despite the score, 20-0, the Bulldog line played as well as tould be expetted against the Terrebonne running attaek. BULLDOGS 14-ABOGALUSA 0 jimmy Taylor sparked the Bulldogs to their first Distritt victory of the season by storing once and passing for the other touchdown in the all-important 'iHOll1L'tl5lT1lI1g victory over Bogalusa, 14-0. The game was truly a eomebaek for the Bulldogs judging from last weeles defeat by Terrebonne, 0-20. The able Bulldog line held the Bogalusa team to but 51 yards, total rushing and passing. The baekfield was in top form with Taylor, Rabb, Martella, Brock, and Smith in top form, Kinehen, Kelly, Bowers, and Retil' alone on the line. Taylor on one yard line to seore against Catholit High. ' I Kinthen on the way to a touchdown. BULLDOGS 28 V-CfA'l'HOI-ICQ HIGH U A pair ot' practitally unpraised hacl-Qs, tailhacl-Q W.irrc-i1 Rahh, and winghack jasper Brock, stole the offensive spotlight from jimmy Taylor in the Bulldogs second district win over Catholic High, 28-O. Taylor tallied once, while Brock went the distance for another. Rablis passes accounted for two more, Retif, Turner, Kelly and Rubenstein were excellent on offense. The game was a double victory, not only for the victorious store, hut because ot' the iity rivalry ot' the two teams. BULLDOGS ZSHMSULIJHUR U The l3.R.H,S. Bulldogs staged a gigantic comehack in the second halt' ot' the game to heat Sulphur lei-15. The Bulldogs were unable to move during the first hall' and the store was 15-0 at the half. In the second half, Allen Smith exploded the rough tackle tor the first score and a Rahb-Kinchen pass accounted for the second. Brock, Smith, and Rahh led the way, and the Bulldogs collected 207 yards rushing and passing. Rahh has the hall, BULLDOGS 68-JENNINGS 7 The Bulldogs routed the extremely weak Jennings team 68-7 with Taylor scoring 32 points. Taylor scored four timesg Kelly went the yardage on an intercepted playg Clem- mons tallied also on an interceptiong Poirrier received two TD passes from Rabbg Rabb scored on a one yard plungeg and Brock on a 32 yard run. The Jennings score came against a mixture of Bulldog reserves. B.R.H.S. gained 265 yards rushing and made 13 first downs. The Bulldogs gained 118 yards in the air. X . Awarded two plaques for outstanding action. MIKE MARCELLO Weight 142 . . . A senior out for his second year. A great asset at the blocking back position. Awarded a plaque for outstanding action. A sophomore playing right end, he Weight 190 - - - A Vilfsltl' fefllef fm' three Yeilfs- he was an able player on the junior team last year. has constantly been a sure fire asset on the line. BULLDOGS 13-OUACHITA 12 A Bulldog rally in the last quarter saved the day for the Bulldogs as they forged ahead to win 13 to 12. Fullback Taylor scored all 13 points. Two Rabb-Kelly passes set up both tallies however. Rubenstein, Robinson, Retiff, Kinchen, Kelly, Turner, Berthelot, Rabb, Smith and Hamilton all played fine ball. BULLDOGS I9 ISTROUMA 7 The Bulldog victory over the lstrouma Indians was more than any ordinary win, for it set the Bulldogs into a 5-way tie with Terrebonne and lstrouma for District Chanips, hut more important it won the title of City Cliainpsm for the hard tight- ing team, which was a titting close to the regular season. Taylor tore through the Tribe line for 191 yards which certainly should cinch All-City and All'State for him. However, every Bulldog played his finest and it was really a team victory 'not a one-man show. Rabh, Mar- cello, and Brock played some of their finest football. On the line Kelly, Kinchen, Ruh- enstein, Banlcston, and Retit' covered themselves with vicv tory.
