fybica The purpose of The Fricassee' is to help alumni re-live their days at Baton Rouge High School. If, in ihe future, a glance through this book can renew that old school spirit and recall some old friends, we will consider our aim achieved. We wish to express our sincere appreciation and gratitude to the business men of our city, to the faculty. and to the very student body which this book por trays. Without their assistance The Fricassee could never have been published. -•mgi • f fiJll 'J tJpcn then i he i)oor! You know fiow link while we have 10 Slav, r And. once departed, may return no more. I i I - Kuhniydt I DEDICATION TO DR. WILLIAM B . HATCHER ★ YVhai greater happiness ran a man ask of life than rhe honor of having written indelibly in deeds, on the hearts of his fellow men. ihe record of his achievements? Such was the happy lot of our dear friend. Dr. William If. Hatcher, to whom we. the class of 1947. dedicate the first post-war edition of the “Fricassee.” In his profession Dr. Hatcher reached the heights of accomplishment attained by the very few. Having begun his career as a classroom teacher, he went through the whole field of educational supervision and administration and finally received the splendid reward of his notably successful work, the presidency of the great Louisiana State University. Those of us who knew Dr. Hatcher personally remember him lovingly as an understanding friend: those of us who knew him only professionally remember him as an efficient, inspired leader, all of us remember him as a man of fine principle—one who fought unfalteringly for the things in which he believed. In dedicating this “Fricassee” to l)r. Hatcher, we firmly resolve that we will keep green his memory by making every effort to live according to the principles for which he stood. His fine integrity will serve as our beacon in life. His splendid courage will be our inspiration. When the going” seems hard, we shall think of our friend and his way of life. Then we will fight all the harder for the right because we shall remember that he lived and passed our way. r . 11SS RKINK ALKXAN1)KR Print ip: ol Baton Rouge High School To know her is to love her. acattij MRS. |. Like all histories, it can hut trace up to the present time the accomplishments and actions of its subjects, and can only pray for what comes later! A decade or so ago there burst forth in the heavens a bright new group of stars which all fell to earth and became, in time, the present Senior Class. Cynics, unbelievers, and doubting astronomers that question this can blame our existence on Adam and Eve. What catastrophe put us here is unimportant; we’re here, we’re Seniors, and we have a history. In the month of September, 1944, we first saw the assorted gods and goddesses called Seniors. and we hoped that some day we would attain such heights. Since that was two years away, though, we decided to become traditional high school students. Driven by violent loves and wild passions of jealousy which shifted weekly and weakly, we slowly became accustomed to the accepted rules and acted accordingly, for belter or for worse. We were industrious learners (for a while, anyway), but soon learned our best lesson—that learning doesn’t pay! Clubs and social groups flourished, and all was well. That summer, several were arrested for stealing watermelons. We were all shocked, for we could not picture such lawlessness. The Junior year was a conflict. Being the in-betweens, the dates with both Sophomores and Seniors were numerous. VVe tried to act our age, but never quite got around to forgetting parties, boys, girls, and true, undying love. More clubs invited membership, and things in general seemed brighter. Many stole glances at the illustrious third-floor clan of teachers and anticipated their fiscal year of avoiding the hazards of work. We looked after the graduating Seniors with an attitude of both respect and good-riddance, for we knew that only the summer stood in our way. Ah, bliss! Ah, peace! Like so many mighty monarchs we tread the sidewalks last fall and knew that all eyes were upon us. We watched leaves wither in our presence, as did the freshmen. The marathon love affairs droned on. and a few new ones broke the monotony. At-social functions our appearances were of much interest.” Several new clubs were formed, each adding a little to our lives in some way. The Senior Meeting, that congress of wisdom and knowledge, was held to elect our officers and to decide the texture, design, and color of our graduation clothing. Final tests were passed overwhelmingly with that flourish so common to our school, and the last fling of dances and parties afforded our taxed minds the needed relaxation to insure our composure for the’’ night. Came the march music, and we gracefully walked down the glorious path of honor. We nodded to the spectators out of our hearts, and proceeded to graduate. Knighted with out diplomas, we joined King Arthur’s Multiplication Table and ended our high school da .e. CLASS WILL We, the members of ilie Senior Class of 1947, being of mind and body (the degree of soundness has not been determined), feeling some obligation to continue the custom of leaving our worldly possessions to you, our mourners, do hereby grant of our generous hearts and souls the following, to wit: To the “next-best,” the Junior Class, we do bequeath our very Seniordoin. This, whether we like it or not, will befall you sooner or later, and we want you to know that our g xxl graces are with you. We give you, in addition, unrestricted use of the halls (our best time from one end of the hall to the other is 2.r seconds) ; the library (suggested reading: card catalog), the cafeteria (roast and potatoes, 20c) and the auditorium (please sit down upon entrance) . Any new privileges that you can grasp, you may have. To the stumbling Sophomores we give the steadying hand. You may ignore one assignment out of three as unnecessary. You may gather in small (ten is limit) groups in the halls to promote the general welfare, and you are required to chew gum daily to secure these other rights. To the yet unseen microbes, the Freshmen, that will shortly infest our school, we dedicate a prayer of guidance. May you find your way and not become tearful. May you reflect the examples of your predecessors and not disgrace our school by being sincerely interested in your education. To the cooks, the maids, and janitors we leave a heartfelt wish—that by July the building will be sufficiently in repair and that all dishes will be washed so that you, too, might have a summer holiday. To those dignitaries, the professors and pro-fessorettes of our faculty, we do leave the following: To Mrs. Michael, five all-boy classes to take her mind away from the English language. To Mrs. Pillow, many miles of crooked halls in which to peek around corners. To Miss Dunbar, an engraved certificate bearing the words, “Child of Grace.” To Miss Lombard, gallant men of yesteryear to practice the code of chivalry. To Miss Womack, a cast of merry-makers to cheer her in trying times. To Miss Burris, a ruler and a dagger to replace her old ones. To Mrs. Craig, something hilarious that she will completely enjoy. To Miss Allison, a student capable of a perfect typewritten page. To Mrs. Young, one gleaming atomic bomb, for such disposal as she thinks appropriate. To Miss Alex, we leave the wish that she will have as little trouble with the next class as she did with our well-disciplined group. To the rest of the faculty, we leave them, and hope that they will enjoy the graduation night as much as we do. A White Prophecy e{fc) Baton Rouge, La., Aijgust 2. 1970. Day CLYDE COCO Coco displayed his talent as a jkiuciIuI fullback this season. Coco's j owcr has won him two letters and a position on the Louisiana-Tcxas All-Star team. T. J. CLAY. CHESTER FREEMAN AND JERRY FOX I hcsc boys were all quarterbacks on the squad. Clay, although a substitute, lived up to all expectations when called upon. Clay will graduate this spring. Freeman’s talent was shown best in offensive play. A smart and steady player. Freeman was valuable in the back field. A two-year letterman, he will stay over next year. Fox was known to most opponents as a small package of dynamite. An alert and rugged defensive player. Fox was a mainstay in the Bulldog secondary. TED JONES AND T. V. STRO'l HER Both Jones and Strother are last coming ends. Thev continued to improve throughout the season and both have another year. They arc both Icttcrmcn. ERNES'I ML R I’ll REE AND BAT RIEI.Y Murphrcc and Riley were both regulars on the squad. Murphree divided his talents between winghack and fullback, while Riley was a mainstay in the line at guard. Both boys are two-year lettermen. I Charles Chili Kriglcr, who was plagued with injuries in 1915, nevertheless completed a success!id season on the Bulldog gridiron. Chili lettered at guard and his spirit and jxrp will lx1 missed by the squad. Big Harold Voss was probably one ol the most versatile athletes to ever enter Baton Rouge High. Voss played more minutes than any other | crson on the squad. He is a tlnee-yeai letterman at guard, and is a member of the All-City and All-State mythical squads. Voss’ tremendous si .c and |x wer in the line were largely responsible lor the successful season of 1916. J. C. Rhcd was the Bulldog triple-threat. He is known throughout the state for his precision in punting and in aerial play. Rhcd has earned two letters and is eligible for two more years of play. Rhcd, along with Voss, made All-City and All-State. CHARLES FUGLER, HAROI.I) VOSS, J. ( . RHEI) SAMMY LkBEAU LcBcau finished his third season of football with the Green anti Gold this year. Sammy was a scrappy and hustling end and a tlnee-yeai letterman. He was a member of the Louisiana-I’exas All-Star team. Cheer Leaders Fred Frey Weldon Mclnnis Dtxlic (.off Jean nine Weems Donnie Jones Carolyn Libby Leonard, Broussard and Williams were continual powerhouses in the forward wall. All three boys are lettennen and arc expected to be back next year. DICK LEONARD EUGENE BROUSSARD CALVIN WILLIAMS TOMMY COLE f ERNEST Ml RIM I REE Murphrce was probable the most versatile member of the squad. Dividing bis duties between wingback and fullback he excelled at both positions. Murphrce is a two-year letter-man. Light but fast Tommy Cole played an outstanding year of ball for the Bulldogs. He is a very fast back, and tallied many points for the Green and Gold. BASKETBALL Basketball Team Dick Millican. forward: Harold Voss, center: Eugene Nolan, guard: Wilson Graham, forward: Hardy Edminston, forward: Billy Bynum, guard: l ed Jones, guard: |. man, guard: Alan Wetzel, forward; Langhait, Senior Manager. HAROLD VOSS Harold’s height was an asset to the squad this season, as his defensive play on the backboard was outstanding. Voss made his third letter this season as well as All-City, and the All Invitational squad at Istrouma. V. Strother, center: Chester Free-J. C. Rhcd, forward, and Bobby J. C. R HKI) lake-’ showed his talent as a crack forward during this season, and is expected to go far in years to come. Rhcd earned a berth on the All-Star team at Zachary, and was the highest individual scorer in any one game, tallying 17 markers. ALAN WETZEL Wetzel played his first year at Baton Rouge High this year, and next year is expected to go far. He earned a letter, and was outstanding player in the Covington Invitational. DICK MILLIGAN Dick was the spark-plug of the squad this year with his service and spirit. Dick earned his third letter this season, made the All City team, and was elected to the All-Istrouma Invitational squad. GRADUATE LETTER MEN Wilson Graham, Dick Millican. Harold Voss. TRACK MANAGERS Harry Barber Bobby Langiiart TOMMY BI N TON Tommy Benton might well be called the backbone of the track team as he can perform well in most anv running event on the track. His specialty is the 880. which he can do in 2:05.8 seconds; but he also runs a leg on the two sprint relay teams and can do 100 yards in 10.3 seconds. Barber has completed a managing career which started in his freshman year at Baton Rouge High. He received a letter in track, and has been affiliated with all other spoi ls. This was Langhart’s first season as a track manager and he has proven valuable with his assistance. Intnunurnl Track Meet Among Harold Voss’s many other athletic achievements is his ability to put the shot. Practically undefeated in two years' competition he won the shot event in the state rally last year and is expected to repeat this performance this spring. He- has set a new record at Baton Rouge High by throwing well over 5 1 feet. He lias brought in practically as many others in the discus event by throwing consistently over 150 feet. —Sruiffs by George Peters DICK MILLIGAN An outstanding sprinter, Dick Millie an. has a personal record of 10.1 seconds in the 100 yard dash. Ross is a diligent player and has a great deal of accuracy in playing his shots. ROGER RICHARDSON Roger Richardson is the most outstanding member of the Bulldog tennis squad, as he performs well both as a singles and as a doubles player. Beside his well-coordinated body and his powerful stroke. Roger has several years' e | e-ricnce to enable him to overcome his opponents. % MRS. ANN M. BOND Girls' Physical Education WILSON GRAHAM ★ Wilson Graham, understudy to Roger Richardson. is an outstanding performer on the tennis team. Wilson is noted for his speed and agil ity which enable him to make shots that would be difficult for the ordinary player. 'k Bobby Bateman, an outstanding performer on last year's team, is expected to be a main stay on the Bulldog squad again this season. His powerful serve has bewildered many of his strong opponents. This year he will probably play in the State Rally, as he is one of the top four.
