_ _ _ Editors Lee Herzberg, Jr. Hon Hreazealk Business Manager Sara Leach n n n j n b n u ISaton z oucje, Jlouihiana I Iii loving memory and sincere appreciation of her twenty years of loyal, enthusiastic service, Baton Rouge High School dedicates the 1910 f ricassee to Miss Irene B. Pujol. Miss Pujol was head of the Romance Languages’ Department and teacher of French and Spanish for twenty years; faculty advisor of the “Honor Club. and of “I.as Estrallas, Spanish Club, and sponsor of Gamma Theta, high school social sorority; donor ol the annual diamond football award to the most valuable football player; donor of the furnishings in the teacher’s lounge, in memory of her mother; a staunch and loyal friend to the teacher and pupil alike; and an enthusiastic booster and champion of all that |x. rtaincd to the promotion and advancement of athletics, scholarship, or culture. Identified intimately as she was with every phase of school activity and keenly alert and zealous for the honor and credit ol “Baton Rouge High,” she leaves an indelible imprint of her vivid personality upon all who have had the happy privilege of association with her. Although diminutive in stature, a familiar and outstanding figure was she at our every gathering or contest, where she Stood out from among us—leading the vanguard, were it the procession of the teachers on graduation night to sit in the front row; or were it the assembly of the students to arouse enthusiasm by her inimitable “| ep” talks on the eve of an im|x rtant football game. For one’s troubles or difficulties she had always a kindly and sympathetic-ear. Her sincerity, frankness, and outspoken comments and fearless champion-ship of what she considered the right won for her the rcs|x. ci and admiration of all. Imbued with the zest of living and with the rare ability of getting much even from the commonplace, the “Senorita” ever brought back with her a limitless fund of interesting and educational experiences from her extensive travels and studies in far away Italy, France, and Spain; from Vermont, New York, Chicago, and California; and from Old Mexico, Cuba, and the South Seas. “Frcnchic” to older faculty intimates, “Miss Irene to former pupils, and “Senorita” to present day pupils and later faculty additions OlIR “Miss Pujol” remains a most lovable character, a tangible memory that lingers on and on to make richer and broader our store of fond experience and our appreciation of lovable human qualities. R. H. S., we gazed in awe at the bigness of our new sanctuary, feeling the insignificance of our being, and lacking quite in audacity. By the end of our freshmanship, we had made some headway in overcoming such obstacles as timidity, awkwardness, and inferiority complexes. When we ascended to our Junior year, feeling nearer the level of seniors, we found great pleasure in “gabbing” in the corridors and being attracted to things that took our minds from our studies. In summarizing the Junior year, the greater part of our time was spent bustling around trying to make impressions upon the opposite sex. Now that the height of seniority lias at last been reached, and we bask in the light of distinction with the proper dig- nity and rank, our desires make us more resolved and intent. Of the 350 seniors who expect to receive degrees, numerous ones shone with high ratings for athletics, music, dramatics. and scholarship. As seniors become capable of withstanding difficulties patterned on a minor scale, we disperse, more prepared to meet the turmoil of the outer world. rims ends the history of the graduating class of June, 1940. May it benefit future seniors, that they may realize that only in the diligent pursuit of the principles of scholarship and sportsmanship can the preparation for the broader things still ahead be made. Dedicated this thirty-first day of May, nineteen hundred and forty. In the opening game of the season the Bulldogs bowled over Houma by a score of 40 to 0. The next week found Hammond the victim of the powerful scoring machine possessed by the Bulldogs. and they fell by a score of 08 to 0. The next victory of the season was chalked up at the hands of Bogalusa’s “Lumberjacks.“ They fell down in tie-feat by a score of 15 to 0. The next week found the new “cocky” Bulldogs taking a trip to Jack-son, Mississippi, where they were beaten by a team which was much weaker in every phase of the game than Baton Rouge. The reason for defeat was the readiness of Jackson to cope with a team which was not mentally ready to play a good ball game. The Green and Gold team snapped back into stride the next week and trimmed a very good Jesuit team by a score of 20 to 6. Came the first game of the City Series and the Bulldogs turned in a highly creditable 28 to 12 victory over their arch rivals, the Istrouma Indians. Green and Gold chances for the rest of the year were given a severe jolt the next week when the state committee ruled that Henry Bozeman. Dick Norton, and John McGraw. three first string men were ineligible for further competition because of the ten term rule. Ruffled by this tough break, the Bulldogs went over to Lake Charles where they won a hard fought battle 10 to 10. The fight shown by the Greenies in this game was thrilling to see and they well deserved the victory they won. The season closed Thanksgiving day with the annual clash between the Bears of Catholic High and the Bulldogs of Baton Rouge High. I he score of 40 to 0 tells better than any writing how well the Bulldogs performed on this sunny afternoon. A few weeks after the season closed, the Bulldogs were chosen to play in the National High School Grid Classic which is held each year at L. S. U. December 30 found the Bulldogs matched against the Pine Bluff Zebras, one of the best high school elevens in the nation. I he Zebras downed the Dogs by a 26 to 0 score but the game was much closer than the score indicated. Several of the Green and Gold players won recognition on all-star squads. Sulcer Harris was chosen on the “All City,” the “All-State,” and the All Southern” teams as a result of his splendid play throughout the season. Red Curtis, James Odam. Fred Parker, Herbert Pickett, and Charlie Dubois were chosen along with Harris on the first “All City” team. Charles Petty, Odis Hayman, Joe Bennett, 'Dickie Saia, and Ivy Thompson were chosen on the second “All City team. At the annual banquet Sulcer Harris was named the Most Valuable” and received a diamond-studded football donated by Miss Irene Pujol. Red Curtis received a diamond-studded football donated by the Mu Sigma Society to the Best Blocker. As a fitting reward for his splendid play throughout this as well as several other seasons, the players chose Charles Dubois as the permanent captain of the 1939-40 season. The Dogs won IS games and lost 0 during a season which saw them successfully defend their District Title, place third in the Stale Tournament, and fourth in the Lyon High Invitational Tournament. I he Bulldogs were far Iroin impressive in their opening games, losing more often than winning. In February we find them in Covington at the Lyon High Tourney defeating Mount Hcrmon, Bogalusa, and Denham Springs, before losing a tough one to the Pride “Panthers.” The Green and Gold were squeezed out of third place by Zachary and had to be content with fourth. We next glance at the District Tournament in Hammond and find our Alma Matct having splendid success. 1 he best game of the tourney was played in the semi-finals when the Greeines put the skids under Istrouma 37 to 2 1. Flic next night the Green and Gold cagers were crowned Southeastern District Champs as a result of their victory over Lyon High. On March 8 the Bulldogs journeyed out to L.S.U. to match their skill with the best teams from all over the State. The Green ics had a first-round bye, given all District Champions. !n their first real clash. Bossier City bowed by a margin of 35 to 18. I he cjuarter-finals found the Indians of Istrouma matched against the Bulldogs of High School and a great battle resulted. The end of the game found the score tied 37-a 11 and a “sudden death ending was decided upon. After a minute of furious play, Tickie Saia dropped in a beautiful shot which spelled Victory. The next morning found the Greenies flat and as a result Byrd High nicked them 37 to 31. Flic Dogs won third from Jesuit on a flip of the coin. Saia was chosen on the Second All-State team. As a result of their efforts during the year, Tickie Saia was chosen “Most Valuable and Gerald Middleton Captain for the 1940 season. In the first meet Neville came over the Bulldogs handed a 7 k to defeat. Green and Gold winners were Thompson. Michael. Barbay, Johnson, and Mansur. A week later the Bruins of Catholic High held our boxers to a draw. Seeming to want revenge for their early defeats, the Bulldogs slugged out an 8£ to 2k win over the Lumberjacks of Bogalusa. The next week found Baton Rouge the victim of Istrouma's fine mitt team. Though they put up a game stand, the Dogs fell by a count of 7 to 3. An upset marked the next bouts. The Orange and Black boys from Catholic High put the skids under the Green and Gold bv a score of 6 to 4. Lafayette succumbed to the flying fists of the Bulldogs the next week by a score of G to 4. The summary for the season showed two victories and a draw on the black side of the books and five losses on the red side. Came the Southeastern Louisiana District Tournament, and Baton Rouge entered with high hopes. Hopes faded as Barbato. Rinaudo, and Bobby Johnson lost out in the first round of the star-studded tourney. The semi-final round saw Barbay, Starring, (ones, and Jamcal Michael eliminated. When the lights were turned on the ring for the championship bouts, only three Green and Gold miners were present. Each of these gave a good account of himself. Charles Sharkey proved to everyone he was made of championship material by winning the I 12-pound crown without being extended. Albert Tcrito fought a great fight, but in vain, as he lost a decision in the 145-pound class. In the consolation bouts Michael scored for the Bulldogs. As a reward for his fine record throughout the season the boxers chose Charles Sharkey Captain and Albert Ter-ito Alternate Captain of the 1940 ring team. Lettermen announced for the season were Joe Barbato, Alvin Barbay, Raynaud Starring, Charles Sharkey, Bolos Mansur, Jameal Michael. Sam Rinaudo. Floyd Rockhold, Bobby Johnson. PAGE EIGHTY THE FRICASSEE Coaches Trainers Jules Roux Francis Strait Kenner Day Ernest Sproles The Green and Gold clad spikemen javelin thrower who now holds the State Manager Billy Jordan under the watchful guidance of Coach Jules Roux won its eighteenth Louisiana State Track and Field Championship this year, winning over Byrd High by a score of 2b to 25. The victory this year is one for Baton Rouge High to be well proud of lor the team swept to victory in the face of odds which seemed to indicate that their hold on the track trophy was to be loosened. The Bulldogs entered the rally with many of the boys competing for the Inst time as a result of the habitual Thursday or Friday rains which caused the postponement of each of the scheduled meets. The Green and Gold clad boys were led to victory by the relay team, Sulcer Harris, John Montgomery. Charles Petty, Ray Terral, and Albert Fritchie. To these boys we owe our present championship, and the Senior class extends its congratulations to them as well as the boys who competed without earning points and to Coach Jules Roux for the splendid job of coaching that he did this year. The Bulldogs were lucky enough to have in the fold this vear a husky, blond record in the event as a result of his 187 foot plus throw in the rally. We salute Charles Petty for his success and offer our heart iest congratulations. The lettcrmen as announced by Coach Roux are as follows: Captain Ray Terrall, sprinter; Alternate Captain Sulcer Harris, jumps; Lambert Romero, sprinter and jumper; Paul Dickson, sprinter; George Burton, hurdles and pole vault; Leslie Henderson, cjiiarter-miler; Ben Phillips, half-miler; Floyd Rockhold, miler; Donnie Olney, shot putter; Bill Lee, discus and javelin; Albert Fritchie, hurdler; Curtis Bradford. cjiiarter-miler; John Yerger, sprinter and jumper; Charles Petty, javelin and discus; John Montgomery, pole vaulter, Leo Pourciau, sprinter and pole vaulter; Oscar Bozeman, high jumper; and Billy Jordan, Manager. What a broad .subject. Today if a person told you that they had just seen the most adorable hat they may mean anything from a bird's nest to a rake pan. Perhaps they mean only a piece of ribbon with a few feathers stuck here and there. Who knows? I have often wondered why the people who invent such things get so much money be-cause it lakes very little brain wink. I know from experience. Last week I was out shopping, trying to lind a hat to match a new dress. I tried on one that looked like a jx wder box held on your head bv a piece of net. Rut that of course was too simple” according to the lady that showed it to me. The next was some funny looking cone with Roman strips draped all over it and me. too. Then came a complete flower garden. I'm telling you this was entirely too much. I simply got up and walked out of the door looking as if I had just lost my last friend. On entering my house some time later I slammed the door so hard that the lamp fell off the table ncar-bv. The base, being china, was completely smashed but the shade rolled across the room. I walked over and picked it up with a sour fare, knowing I would hear from my mother about it. But before 1 had taken another step an idea struck me. I dashed up to my room and shut the door, this time with more care. The clothes Itegan flving fiom m drawers and after several minutes of careful searching I emerged with a velvet ribbon, a (lower, and a pair of scissors. My friends, believe it or not. this was the beginnings of a hat. Using the lamp shade for the foundation, I twisted the ribbon and tied the flower into place and soon I had a true modern hat. The first time I wore it my friends all had what you might call a conniption fit. Where on earth did you get it?” and “How much did it cost? and many other questions were asked. So you see. don’t ever think you can't find a becoming or sensible hat. That part really doesn't matter in the least. Just lie sure it will stay on your head when the wind blows. Vance, along with two companions, left school in the afternoon of May 10 with intentions of swimming ac ross the Mississippi River. Late afternoon found the two companions returning without young White. He had failed to make the river by about 200 yards and was drowned. Though he had been at High School only one year, he had made many fast friends, both with the students and the teachers. He was an excellent student, a member of the boxing team, and the debating team.
