Tl-IE - l93l - rRlcAfrl-:L 3 2 Q THE 1930 FOOTBALL SEASON HE 1930 Baton Rouge High school football team will go down into annals of Bulldog athletics as one cf the gamest bands of athletes which ever represented Batc-n Rouge High. With their team strength sapped throughout the season by numerous injuries, the Green and Gold gridiron warriors came through many trying moments and turned back the threats of the state's best grid machines. Playing under huge floodlights at Bulldog field, the Bulldogs triumphed over the lndepe-ndence Tigers, 39 to 6, in the first night foctball game held in this section. Coach Stovall showed in this game that he had a club which was capable of carrying on the work of the wonderful l929 eleven. However, certain changes, due to injuries, trans- formed the clicking Bulldog machine into a woefully crippled squad during almost the entire season. ln their second tilt, the Bulldogs defeated Ponchatoula's Green Wave, l3-C, but in doing this they paid a great price. The incessant battering and fighting of the deter- mined Ponchatoula eleven inflicted costly injuries to several of Coach Stcvall's crack ball carriers, and the Bulldogs took on some of the hardest games of the I930 campaign minus the services of these men. Sorely in need of regular leather luggers, the Bulldogs met their ancient rivals, the Bolton Bears, in the next game on the schedule. Though the Green and Gold pigskin pushers entered the contest as underdogs, they fought the strong Bolton outfit to a 0-0 tie. Coach Stovall's hard fighting crew showed their remarkable spirit the following week by battling the formidable Jennings High schocl team, 1929 South Louisiana state champions, to a 7-7 deadlock. Although scheduled to lose, the crippled Baton Rouge High showed what a fighting team can do-injuries or no injuries. The downfall of the Bulldog eleven seemed inevitable. A team, sapped by numerous injuries, warding off threats of the pick of the state's elevens, was bound, sooner or later, to collapse. With a second string outfit on the field due to the injuries of almost every regular, the Bulldogs dropped a 65-0 game to the Jesuit Blue ,lays of New Orleans on the Crescent City grid. Morgan City's Greenbacks came to Baton Rouge with revenge in their hearts for a defeat handed them in l929. The Green clad Morgan City boys attempted to take advantage of the Bulldogs' weakness at that stage of the season, but they were disappointed. Fighting hard after the great defeat in New Orleans, the Bulldogs held the Creenbacks to a 0-0 tie in a fine display of defensive and offensive football. Lake Charles, apparently headed for the state championship, fell short of their goal when they came to Baton Rouge. The Stovallites did not stop at just tying the Wildcats. they defeated the Lake Charles outfit, 6-0, and sent them back home a very much disappointed team. Up popped the jinx in the Bulldogs final game of the 1930 night football program. Hammond High school's Tornado, after upsetting the dope by beating the -Bulldogs' formidable eleven in l929, repeated their victory. With Hashv little junior Bowman running loose, the Hammond crew chalked up a I2-0 score over the Bulldog Pack. ln no small part the credit for the success of a team fighting under such a handicap goes to the student body, which turned out for the games en masse to cheer their Bulldogs on to victory! The students are to be commended for their support. J LT1m'nl.'l-sf-rcnj THE ' IQSI ' FRICAIIEIL THE 1931 SEASON RADUALLY regaining lost prestige on the basketball court, the Baton Rouge High School Bulldog cage quintet, under the coaching of Hefley Hank Stovall, established an excellent record during the I93l season, winning I5 out of I8 dual tilts and placing third in one district tournament. They finished fourth in another tourney. The Green and Gold cagers' offensive play was built around the brilliant goal ringing of Leonard Tolusso and Henry Young, crack pair of forwards. Charlie Young and Captain T. C. Jeter held down their guard posts well during the season, the play of the former standing out. Harold Trouard and Earl Brown alternated at center, while J. W. Lea filled in at both guard and forward. Following is the Bulldogs' I93I record: Bulldogs ........ . 92 Oak Grove . . . . 43 Bulldogs . . . . . 65 Hammond . . . . . YOUNCIS colorful l93I team of Baton Rouge High school spikemen again demonstrated supremacy on track and field by capturing their seventh consecutive state championship at the annual state rally track meet last April. The Green and Gold tracksters' brilliant state rally triumph climaxed a highly successful season in which the Bulldogs won top honors at the annual running of the Southwestern relays and defeated their two dual meet oppo- nents, Bolton High of Alexandria, and Jesuit of New Orleans. Led by the crack little cinderman, Captain Larry Bullion, the Bulldogs piled up a total of 36 points at the Southwestern carnival. The first dual meet of the year for the Bulldogs was a practice meeting with the l... S. U. freshmen. The collegians won, 74 to 46. Upholding the reputation of not having lost a dual meet in six years, the Green and Gold cindermen invaded Alexandria to hand the Bolton Bears their annual beating. The Bulldogs won easily by a 75 to 42 score. Clarence Roberts was the star of the meet, getting first in both hurdles races and also in the 220-yard clash. ln the first outdoor night track meet ever held in the South, the Bulldogs turned back a determined Jesuit High school combination at Bulldog field. The final score was 82 to 35, the Bulldogs placing first in I I of the I5 events on the program. fContinued on next pagej LThirt1lJ rn: - IQSI - rRlcA.rrEl-'. THE TRACK SEASON- C Continued J The Jays came into their own in the state rally, however, and gave the Bulldogs a real scare. For a while during the meet it seemed as though the Bulldogs would relinquish their title to the New Orleans club, and a late rally was all that saved the Green and Gold spikemen from defeat. Baton Rouge High emerged the victor with 2624 pooints as compared with ZZVQ for Jesuits. Clarence Roberts was again Baton Rouge High's star, winning first place in both the l20-yard high hurdles and the 220-yard low hurdles. I lTl1iz-fy-onrfl fl-IE ' l93l ' FRICAIIEE THE B, R. This was the first year of organized dramatics in High School, and the initial venture on the stage proved highly successful. Rayburn Anderson, Margaret Hochenedel, Christine Freeman, and Jack Turley played the leading roles. All members of the club took part in the play. Excellent .acting marked The Will o' the Wisp, the play which won Baton Rouge High top honors in dramatic interpretation in the state rally last April. Mercedes Weil, Laure Elise Callahan, Margaret Hochenedel, and Jean Perkins formed the cast, and each played her part to perfection to earn the first-prize decision. The membership' of the club is as follows: Clarence Roberts, presidentg Rayburn Anderson, vice-president: Eola McCall, secretary-treasurer: Laure Elise Callahan, Margaret Hochenedel, Jean Perkins, Mercedes Weil, Jack Turley, Ludwell Owen, Hamilton Johnson, Jean Saliers, George Hillard, Christine Freeman, Eloise Carlock, Winona Escudier, Paul Cashio, Beverly Lyle, Evelyn Sheets, Elsie Phillips, Dewey Holden, and Radford Williams.
