D llll I X r' I THE 1929 FOOTBALL SEASON AT THE BEGINNING of the 1929 football season, few were the people who thought that it would end in such a blaze of glory. The Bulldogs had a new, and as yet untried coach and had finished the year previous with an extremely poor record. However, the spirits of the boys and their coach were high-that old never say die attitude of the High School. In the first game with Independence, we showed a strong offense, but many rough spots to be ironed out. That a great gridiron machine was in the making, we could plainly see. Our men were victors by the top-heavy score of 51-0. This did not appease the appetite of the Bulldogs. On the following week- end, we met Reserve, and only a few minutes of carelessness on our part pre- vented them from being shut-out. Our 89 to 6 victory certainy avenged the 15 to 13 defeat of 1928. The next Saturday found a large crowd of supporters following the team toward Alexandria to do battle with, Bolton, our oldest and most bitter rival. Lobdell gathered a forward pass into his arms and dashed thirty-six yards for the score. The boys are still talking about Blair's taking the oval over for the extra point. In the fourth quarter Mahfouz passed to Holmes who stepped over the line for a touchdown. But the big Blue line didn't hold, and Mahfouz failed to buck the line for the point. The 7 to 6 victory was ample revenge for defeats of two years past. And when we returned home the next Friday, there came a let-down. The Hammond game marred our perfect record it is true, but showed that a Billdog team never goes down without a fight. The score was 21 to 7. Over to Lake Charles we wended our way the next week-end. And again we showed why we are called Bulldogs. In the mud and water we took a 7 to 6 decision over the Wildcats. Jesuits came to Baton Rouge the next Saturday. Our chance seemed slim when the dope entered as a factory the predictors forgot that we were Bulldogs fighting for recognition that had been denied us for two years past. We ran roughshod over the Jays to triumph 26 to 0. Lobdell played great ball, as did the entire team. The game with Morgan City was played on a gridiron wet and soggy after a week of rain. Dick Cadwallader and Bill Lobdell showed their all-state calibre in the Bulldogs' 12 to 0 victory. , On Thanksgiving morning we met Ponchatoula on Bulldog Field in the last game on the regular schedule. When the smoke had cleaered up the visitors were on the short end of a 33 to 0 score. The Athletic Association, in its meeting on Saturday declared a, triple tie for Southern Division Title among Baton Rouge, Warren Easton and Jennings. However, Warren Easton refused to meet Baton Rouge and was thus disqualified. In what was perhaps the greatest game cf prep school football in Louisiana, Jennings outscored us 26 to 20. Fans for the last time saw that wonderful Bull- dog line inaction, for the last time saw the reckless ball carrying of Captain Bill Lobdell. The Sports edition of the Buzzer contains a fitting tribute to the great team of 1929, as follows: The year 1929 saw new laurels added to Baton Rouge High School's fine record of athletic prowess. Our football team deserves especial mention. Un- heralded was this, the finest team ever to wear the colors of the Green and Old Gold. Ably led by William Bill Lobdell, great all-star quarterback, the Bulldogs won seven of their eight games. Baton Rouge, under Lobdell's captaincy was known as a team that played together, a team without any friction among the players. Let us give due credit to our coach, whose fine work contributed so much to the Bulldogs' success. He has been with us for only one year, but has already gained distinction among us as a fine gentleman as well as a fine coach. To Mr. Young goes the credit for the conspicuous lack of injuries in our camp. The students have supported their team with their pocket money as well as their cheers. The Athletic Association received the one hundred percent support of the student body. Yes, it has been a great year for the old school. All hail, Baton Rouge Hgih! This was the sixth consecutive year that Baton Rouge has, under the ccaching of Ed Young, won the title. Some fifty can- didates, led by Captain Stockwell, were out vying for honors. The Bulldog spikemen opened the season at the South- western Relays in Lafayette, by making a clean sweep of the high school relays and taking places in practically all of the special events. The mile relay team, composed of Bul- lion, Schwab, McGowan, and Stockwell, bettered the state record by one tenth of a second. In the first dual meet of the season we trounced Bolton to the tune of 85 to 32. A victory of this type over our oldest and most bitter rival was indeed sweet to the Bull- dogs. McCowan breezed a beautiful quarter in this meet. And then came the Southeast Louisiana Rally at Don- aldsonville. It was a Bulldog tale all the way through, and we scored a smashing victory. The next Saturday, we met Jesuits in New Orleans. This meet saw our Captain Stockwell renewing his old feud with Captain Daigle of Jesuits. Daigle won the century in a sprint of ten flat, while Stockwell equalled his state record in the 220. The final score was 795 to 3715 for the Bulldogs. In the State Rally, the Bulldogs led the field with a score of 3715 to Jesuits' 14. Roberts won both of the hurdle races, and Ratelle broke the fifteen year old record in the broad jump. Captain Stockwell made a beautiful finish in 50 seconds flat to give us the relay. The 1930 Fricasseca. He makes things work like the tick of a meter. WHOSE BROTHER? A modern miss with no brother, Is indeed most woefully blind. For little knows she, of this wonderful he , Of the ways and means of his kind. Some girls will rave at a shiek's swift line, And love him for something or other, But I have to confess that more or less, They all act just like my big brother. The hours are well known to a sister dear, That before his mirror he spends, In acquiring that air, by the part in his hair, That so to his character lends. And when he calls her up at night, And she will go out in the breeze? He most breaks his neck, in trying to select A tie that surely will please. And that careless air he must attain By placing his hat just so, Tho' it may fool his sweetheart, as so clever on his part, As for me-sisters always know. -Lucite H arelson. Miss Horton in 9.2 English: You people are getting too unruly alfogether. If you don't watch your step, I'll sit on you and you'll never know what struck you. . Mrs. Voorhies: Who was Mohammed?
