CLASS PHSTORV At the begxnmng of the year we drew up the l1st of pr1v1leges that all of us had so long awa1ted Those wonderful days f1nally arr1ved when we could leave our lower classmates waxtxng at the sta1rway for the bell to rxng wh1le we proudly walked up the steps Lxttle thmgs lxke th1s were goxng to make us stand out as the senlors of Bath H1gh School Sometlme dur1ng the second month of our sen1or year we declded to go to Washlngton D C ln the fall 1nstead of wa1t1ng untll the sprlng Preparat1on was made and on November 12 twenty two of us left Bath for a four day tour of Wash1ngton D C Words cannot express how we enjoyed the trlp but no one regretted golng' We returned wlth memorles of Washmgton D C 1n our mxnds that w1ll never be forgotten After commg back from Washmgton we selected our class h1stor1an prophet and testator We had a volunteer comm1ttee to wr1te our class poem and song Now we are eagerly wa1t1ng for the sprmg of the year to arr1ve when we st1ll have many thlngs to look forward to gettmg our class r1ngs presentmg the Semor Play the Junlor Semor Banquet Senlor Day and fmally graduatxon when we w1ll b1d dear old Bath H1gh farewell and con t1nue on our way CLASS PROPHECV When I got off from work I was very contented The next day started my two weeks vacat1on Both my wxfe and I had two weeks off Our vacatxon was to be chmaxed by a homecom1ng of my old classmates mn 52 The year IS now 1962 After school I had got a Job w1th the Navy Department 1n the Pentagon, here 1n Wash1ngton, D C A large number of my classmates have settled ln the cap1talc1ty Els1e Cutler 15 a prlvate secretary to J Edgar Hoover dlrector of the F B I Eva Carrow IS ass1stant manager of the Greyhound Bus Stat1on and H1lda Woolard and Lola Woolard are also worklng w1th the Pentagon Elmo Sullxvan and Leon Tetterton are owners of the S 81 T Cafeterxa, one of VlLash1ngton's largest and swankxest cafeter1as and Trav1s Latham IS the manager of the Ambassador Hotel But gettmg back to my story When we got home we ate supper and then went out to a mov1e The theatre was a drxve 1n just 1ns1de Maryland owned by Josh Waters I espec1ally wanted to see th1s p1cture because the star was one of my classmates Jeanette Waters who had been sent to Hollywood after graduatxon by a talent scout She has made qulte a name for herself as a dramat1c actress In a sports short on basketball Bud G1bbs star player of the Washmgton Cap1tals was featur ed He 1S a very valuable player for the team When we got back home I turned on the rad1o to WCKY My old classmates Donald Jackson and Octavus Wallace had just started the1r program They have become popular h1llb1lly recordmg stars and have a rad1o program 1n whlch they promlse to show you how to play the harmomca 1n ten easy lessons After the1r program we packed our lug gage and went to bed The next mormng we prled our luggage mto the car and thus began our tr1p a.nd well earned vacatlon On the outsk1rts of Arhngton I stopped at Boyd's Servlce Stat1on owned by Mason Boyd I fxlled up the tank and cont1nued on to Rlchmond , . , . . . . CLASS HISTORY was 1n the fall of '48 when we, the graduat1ng class of 1952 assem bled at the Bath Hlgh School to begln the gr1m task of tackllng four long years of h1gh school work Contrary to our pess1m1st1c thoughts of '48 however we have found these four years to be the shortest and happ1est years of our l1ves There were seventy two of us to enroll as freshmen Due to the fact that there was such a large group of us we were d1v1ded 1nto two smaller groups M1ss Ed1th K11by was 1n charge of the g1rls wh11e Mr Gray Hodges was 1n charge of the boys Before long we had learned the general rout1ne of h1gh school hfe At last we knew how lt felt to change classes every hour Not much was accompllshed by our class durrng freshmen year outs1de of our h1gh school stud1es We d1d have a few members 1n the FFA and FHA Also s1x wa1tresses and s1x wa1ters were chosen from our class to assxst 1n the Junxor Sen1or Banquet Before we could realxze lt, vacat1on had come and gone and the fall of '49 found us back at school ready for another year of h1gh school work We found that ten students had dropped from our happy group, leav1ng a total of s1xty two Agam we had to be separated Mrs Vu: g1n1a Howe was 1n charge of the gxrls nd Mr Fenner Boyd Jr the boys Our sophomore year sw1ftly flew by Many of our members Jomed varlous clubs 1n wh1ch they have rema1ned act1ve members for three of thexr h1gh school years We were glad to have some of our members rece1ve 1nv1tat1ons to Jom the Beta Club, wh1ch was a new orgamzatlon that had been formed the prev1ous year In August 1950 we entered our Jun1or year, the next we thought to the most 1mportant year Our class enrollment was f1fty s1x Learn 1ng that we d1d not have to be d1v1ded, we were happy to have as our adv1ser Mrs Evelyn Payne To beg1n the year off r1ght we elected our class off1cers who were as follows Guy Hawklns, Pres1dent Jeanette Waters, V1ce pres1dent Cl1fton Cutler Secretary Tommy Tyer Treasurer and Della Tetterton From the very beg1nn1ng we began plann1ng ways of ra1s1ng money for the Jun1or Sen1or Banquet an event we had been dreamlng of for the past two years Our most 1mportant project was our Ju.n1or play In November we presented a three act comedy ent1tled Crash1ng Soc1e ty wh1ch 1n sp1te of foothght Jltters turned out to be a success F1nally the day of the banquet arr1ved when m1sfortune struck for the f1rst t1me A group of our boys overturned a borrowed truck 1n an acc1dent that could not have been avo1ded The boys were not hurt be yond a few m1nor scratches so the damaged truck was forgotten unt1l later The banquet a Mexlcan scene w1th a gay color scheme turned out successfully A sem1 formal dance wh1ch followed made the occas1on one to be remembered After the exc1tement of the banquet d1ed down we once aga1n start ed ra1s1ng money Th1s tlme lt was to pay for the truck We were glad to have the Beta Club one of our teachers, M1ss Sledd and the Sen1or Class come to our a1d wxth donat1ons wh1ch were greatly apprec1ated Before very long we had pa1d the complete b1ll Towards the close of school the followrng marshals were chosen for commencement from our class Al1ce Meeklns Ch1ef H1lda Woolard Jeanette Waters Helen Bradley and Travxs Latham We were proud to see some of our students rece1ve merits of honor on graduatlon n1ght Fo1low1ng are the Sen1or Class off1cers that were elected at the close of our Jun1or year Donald Jackson, Presrdent Guy Hawkxns V1ce pres1dent Jeanette Waters Secretary H1lda Woolard Treasurer and Al1ce Meekms Reporter In the late surnmer of '51 we began our last year of h1gh school work under the superv1s1on of M1ss Isabel Carter We were sorry to learn that e1ght more of our classmates had dropped out 1eav1ng a total of forty e1ght Among those dropp1ng out was our V1ce pres1dent Guy iawkms Tommy Tyer was elected to serve 1n h1s place , - 1 I . As I was golng through R1chmond I suddenly brought the car to a stop On a b1llboard was a Slgn that read Dar1ng Bud Dan1els and h s Fearless Hell Dr1vers w1ll appear here 1n person the 4th of July Bud, also, was an old classmate Then I real1zed I was hold1ng up traffxc I looked back to see a tax1 dr1ver gettmg out of h1s car Here's where I get a bloody nose, I thought but the dr1ver turned out to be Tommy Tyer As we talked traff1c p1led up Soon a motorcycle came p I thought I d get a tlcket but the cop was none other than Leroy Tetterton He also Jo1ned 1n the conversatlon Soon I bade my fr1ends goodbye and cont1nued on through R1chmond I dec1ded to go through Norfolk and stop 1n to see some of my classmates F1rst, I went down to the Naval Base to see Lt Commander R1chard Carrow Then I went up town where Helen Bradley 1S as s1stant manager of RICCIS Department Store Then we had lunch at Bell's Restaurant where Lou Brooks and Carolyn Chr1smon were wa1tresses After lunch we cont1nued on down towards North Carolma, arr1v1ng 1n Wash1ngton 1n t1me to hear Governor Boyd make a speech at the court house H15 secretary Della Tetterton was r1ght there to h1s ass1stance' Carl Aust1n 15 Governor Boyd's fa1thful chauffeur Upon tal.k1ng to Della and Carl, I learned that Doreta S1mps on 1S the Wlfe of Ronald Wallace famous coach for N C State I also learned that Glorla McGowan 1S 1n South Arner1ca w1th her husband who 1S about to complete a b1g construct1on Job Inc1dently her husband 15 Jack A111 good I also learned that B1lly Sanderson 15 the new agr1culture teacher at Bath, and Ahce Meek1ns and Evelena Sull1van are teachers at Snow H111 I further learned that Pearl G1bbs and Magg1e Cordon are profess 1onal cartoorusts w1th Dell Publ1cat1ons 1n New York C1ty Mary Sk1nner 1S pr1vate secretary to Jack Marsh, manager of Marsh's and Son's De partment Store 1n Bath Cl1fton Cutler 1S a d1str1ct salesman for L1bby McNe1l 8: L1bby's Incorporated and makes h1s home 111 Wash1ngton Park I was glad to hear of so many of my classmates and was glad to hear On the way to Bath I was almost S1deSW1ped by a Norfolk and South ern Bus d1-wen by Jul1a Woolard Now we even have women bus dr1vers What w1l1 they th1nk of next 'P The next day I saw Cl1fton and he told me that he too had run 1nto some of our classmates 1n h1S travels He told me that Lola Ward was a b1g telev1s1on star out west, and that Dora Dean Woolard was an 1r l1ne hostess for T W A He sa1d he had taken many tr1ps on her fl1ght to f1eld Off1CeS 1n South Ame r1ca Wlth none other than Jack Mason as the p1lot Cl1fton also told me that Hugh Boyd was an algebra 1nstructor at E C C and had a very n1ce home 1n Greenv1lle He also sa1d that Frances Woolard was the manager of Behc Tyler's and that Nelda Woolard was a tyP1St for the Wash1ngton Da1ly News Tune went by and our vacat1on was com1ng to an end There were Stlll some classmates I d1dn t know about yet F1nally came the 4th of July the n1ght of our homecommg We were hav1ng lt 1n the Club Blackbeard, Bath's newest n1ght spot The club was a very n1ce place Everyone of the 52 graduates was there except Glor1a who 15 1n South Ame r1ca I learned that Luv1na Chr1smon 15 a Hollywood dress des1gner do1ng very well Rosa Lee Everett 1S l1v1ng 1n Kentucky w1th her husband who sells 1nsurance Sh1rley Asby and Irene Cox both are marrled and are help1ng the1r husbands operate a restaurant 1n Bath I learned that Thelma Gurk1ns IS runn1ng a beauty parlor 1n P1ne town and l1keW1Se Lorena Keech has opened up a shop 1n Bath that guarantees ' to make you beaut1ful for S10 Elma Jordan had come from Cal1.forn1a for the event She had start ed out Yxllth a dress -shop 1n Sacramento and now has a Chaln of stores The homecommg was a success It was very good to see and talk wzth all my classmates after 10 years But all th1ngs must end and soon I was back 1n D C I was really glad that my classmates had all had good luck 1n the1r IIVCS after grad uat1on . . ,, . .
