THE 1972-73 BULLDOGS The Bulldogs finished the sea- son with an impressive 7 wins and 3 losses. This was one of the most successful seasons ever at BHS. The all conference team was made up of Toby Mollaun, Rick .' 42 ¢ Meyer, Keith Gehring, and John is 2 , : t Dieckman on defense, and Mike : Prickel and Keith Gehring on q 's 0” 5 ? offense. Keith was also Toees the Most Outstanding Offensive Player. John Dieckman was voted the winner of the Defense Award, Keith Gehring was the Most Val- uable Player, and Bernie Flodder received the BYA award. SENIORS: K. Gehring, D. Krekeler, P. Durkin, J. Defense Halts Opponents For 4 Shutouts Co-Captains Keith Gehring and Bernie Flodder Coach Demuth makes adjustments in the game against Lawrence- burg as the Dogs find themselves down 6-0 at halftime. Keith Gehring makes good yardage with able blocking by Art Nobbe and Bob Kreuzman. Keith Gehring carried the ball 245 times and gained 1369 yards for 5.6 average. In two years he gained over 2700 yards and scored 31 touchdowns, defense allows only 82 points Defense, led by John Dieckman, Terry Prickel, Rick Meyer, Toby Mollaun, and Mike Prickel, smear the Lawrenceburg ball carrier. This is a school record. Gehring battles for yardage against Lawrenceburg. strength alone knows conflict The Bulldogs lost the season opener to Rushville and in overtime to Madi- son the following week. Bolstered by the return of Keith Gehring, the Bull- dogs rebounded by subduing Cambridge City and trouncing Aurora. This set up the conference championship game against Lawrenceburg. The Tigers and Bulldogs plodded through the mud to end regulation playing time at a 6-6 tie. Two overtimes and a touchdown later the Tigers emerged the winners and eventual conference champions. The Bulldogs then ran off five succes- sive wins, highlighted by a win over Greensburg for the first time in 11 years, Well done dogs. Brent Billman and John Moorman were the leading scorers for the team. These two boys, along with Alan Butt, Tom Ertel, and Jerry Prickel, were all-con- ference runners. The harriers are coached by Mr. Raver. pAESVILip HGH SCHOO With the loss of 7 of the 12 varsity members, much responsibility will be placed on these Freshman boys. Tennis Team Earns 3-4 Record se a 4 a The 1972 Varsity tennis team compiled a 3-4 record. Those wins were the first ever for Batesville High School since starting the sport. The Bulldogs had a very suc- cessful season, closing with a 9-2 dual meet record, Batesville won its first invitational by winning the Tri-High Invitational. The Bulldogs won second, third, and sixth in other invitationals. Seniors on the team included Gary Jewell, 9-6, Earl Roell, 9- 9-2, Bob Kreuzman, 13-2, and Mike Kramer, 3-3. Senior Pat Durkin finished with a 15-5-1 record and became Batesville's first sectional champion in wres- tling. Underclassmen contributing to the team with good efforts were Rick Foley, 16-8, who set a school record for most wins in one season; Tom Harmeyer, 14-9, Dave Struewing, 13-9, Bob Nar- wold, 12-8, and Ron Dierckman, 4-2. The Battling Dogs stayed with most every team on the schedule but just couldn't put all things to- gether for a winning year. Various players performed very nicely at times but the lack of consistent play hurt in the long run. The future looks much brighter as six players are returning who have seen considerable varsity experience. , The Bulldogs finished tied for fourth in the EIAC. it is better to wear out. . . . . . than to rust out The Batesville Reserve Basketball Team finished the 1973 season 10-9. There was a large group of Freshmen and Sophomores who gained experience which will be valuable next year. The Freshman Squad posted their best season ever, finishing 20-4, As the ELAC Conference Champions, Coach Raver and his Bulldogs compiled the highest winning percentage by a Freshman team. The high school Golf Team played seventeen matches this year, winning ten, losing five and tieing two. The PEP CLUB did its best to back the Bulldogs during the basketball and football seasons this year. Led by the cheerleaders the club val- iantly urged the teams to victory.
