THE 1972 BATESVILLE BULLDOG After All Isn't Life Just A POT 2 POURRI Of All These Entities? A school has sounds all its own; people constructing or composing, playing, or per- forming, traveling or tackling. There is a contrast between Sounds 4 Silence One is ever present; one must be searched for. But in their values they are alike, for in silence, too we can concentrate, communicate, sculpt, or perhaps sleep. 5 6 In this busy world, a moment of solitude is an increasingly precious thing. tude Whenever I need to leave it all behind or feel the need to get away I find a quiet place far from the human race . .. 1 stand alone and take back something worth remembering. Three Dog Night 7 Love—Love—Love “Now sometimes, no always when i awaken and tramp into the bathroom brush my teeth, and that tired feeling, like no head belongs on my shoulders, and then when i finally find my head thinking that i didn't do my homework and so what and then the sun shines through the win- dow so scrambled eggs which i eat all this pre- paring for school and all how wonderful to love you so much.” Steve Light 8 Love Is All There Is! In his first year as football coach at BHS, Mr. Demuth has combined an impressive 5-5 season. Football season at BHS ended with a 5-5 record. The ‘Dogs had two seasons; the first a molding period and the second the Dogs got down to business. The defense held its opponents scoreless for three straight games. Named to the EIAC All-Conference team on defense were Dan Muckerheide, guard; Al Goldsmith, line backer; and Larry Lamping, Halfback. One of the outstanding players on offense was junior Keith Gehring. He scored 110 points over the season, making six TD’s in one game and five in another. He averaged 5.9 yds. per game for a total of 1346 yds. gained. Rick Meyer was the leading pass receiver. These men will all be lost to the squad through graduation. Each one has made tremendous contributions and will be greatly missed next season. The EIAC All-Conference Team QB Bob Wessel looks down field as he returns a punt for a TD against the Vikings. Keith Gchring shows his All-Conference form as he sweeps right end behind excellent backing. Offensive All-Conference was Keith Gchring, Pat Durkin, and Noel Kurtz. BHS was blessed with two kickers this year, Joe “The Toe” Weigel and Mike “Krash” Kramer. Both got the Dogs out of some close quarters. Added this year as an incentive by Coach Dcmuth was the “Bull- dog Hitters Club”. Members were selected for their aggressive acts and hitting desire. This year’s members were Noel Kurtz, Dan Muckcr- heidc, Mike Stillc, Al Goldsmith, Rick Meyer, Mike Zielinski, and Bcrnic Flodder. The managers for the team were seniors Greg Bettice, Neil Kurtz, and Bob Lucssc, and sophomore Chuck Mecr. Bob Wessel gets away a long bomb just in time! Larry Lamping does his thing- rcturning an interception for a long gain. 65 Bulldog Defense Holds Opponents The defensive team made an impressive showing this season al- lowing only 177 pts. compared to the Bulldogs’ 214 pts. Outstanding defensive players were ends Mike Prickcl and Toby Mollaun; tackles Dan Muckcrhcidc and Mike Stillc; and backs Al Goldsmith. Bemic Floddcr, Noel Kurtz. Rick Meyer, Larry Lamping, Bob Wesscl, and Keith Gehring. Also playing out- standing defense were Tom Schwcgman, Phil Bedel, John Dicckman, Mike Zielinski, and Ron Prickcl. With thirteen returning letter- men apd the new squad members coming up, WATCH OUT SPORT FANS, HERE WE COME!! Goldie, Prickcl, and Floddcr slam the ball carrier to the ground as Stille, Muck, and Gehring are ready to help. Move over, darling. 66 Scoreless For Three Straight Games Goldie, after intercepting a pass, is on his way to paydirt. 67 X-Country Team Pictured above is this year’s cross country team. Only one member will be lost through graduation. The rest of the squad consists of eight juniors and six sophomores. The squad is coached by Mr. Raver. Finishes With This year’s cross country team posted another good season. In dual, triangular, and four way meets, the men of BHS posted ele- ven wins against two losses. The runners placed second in the Jen- nings Co., North Dearborn, and Ripley Co. invitationals. The lead- ing scorer this year was junior Brent Billman, followed closely by Ron Laker. These two were named co- most valuable runners. Tom Ertel and John Moorman demonstrate the true form for winning. They are both way ahead of the pack. Eleven Wins And Only Two See Mark run. Run on and on and on . . . The only senior on the cross coun- try team this season is Ron Laker. He will be sorely missed. Keep going, Paul; you can make it— maybe. Quibo brings it on home. Alvin Dierckman is one of our up and coming underclassmen. 69 Wrestling Team Has Fine Season Batesville's wrestling team completed a successful season win- ning the last four dual meets. The grapplcrs finished second in the Tri-High Invitational and fifth in the Sectional. Outstanding indi- viduals were Mike Zielinski, 15-4; JimTekulvc, 12-4; Gary Jewell, 11-4-1; and Jim Niese, 9-2-2. Jim Tckulvc placed 2nd in the sectional and advanced to the New Castle Regional before being defeated. The wrestlers wait for the signal from the referee to begin their match. Wrestler Jim Laker tries to gain advantage of his opponent. Ends Year With 7 Wins And 2 Losses Junior Jim Tekulvc finished 2nd in the Sectional and represented BHS in the Regional. Coach Juergens looks on intensely as a fan yells encouragement to the grapplcrs. Jim Tekulvc works for a pin over his North Decatur opponent. 71 BHS Netters Have Slow Season Above is the BHS tennis team coached by Mr. Kelley. This is only the second season for tennis but the netters are improving with each match. With two years of experience, the boys should be strong contenders for EIAC honors. Coach Kelley is looking for great things from “super swinger”: Jay Mollaun is a sophomore. Another mainstay for the team is junior Dan Dickey. 72 Another Successful Year For Golf Team Mike Kramer, Tom Gardner, John Goldsmith, Bob Wernke.Tom Meyer, and Jerry Prickcl make up the golf team for BHS. Always a strong opponent, the team hopes to better its record by taking high honors at sectional and regional meets. Mr. Gardner is the coach. John Goldsmith shows the correct form for a long drive to the green. 73 Thinclads Have Successful Season 74 Seniors Look Forward To A Good Season 75 Varsity Is Third In EIAC The VARSITY basketball team had a successful season even though there was an unsuccessful won-lost record. The season began without return- ing letterman Greg Cooley who sus- tained a football injury. This injury kept him out of four early season games and hampered his playing for three-fourths of the season. The second half of the season found Greg returning and the other players pulling themselves together for a strong ending. The Bulldogs finished third in the IAC. The JUNIOR VARSITY was fortunate to have sixteen players participating in games as well as practice. Although the season’s won-lost record was not as good as the players would have liked, the team was always very competitive and several of the players showed much promise for future years. Bernie Flodder, the team captain, led the team in points with 171, while the big guys, Lee Gicsting and Greg Wehr, tied for rebounding honors with 117 each. 76 The C-team squad is made up primarily by sophomores. These boys show a great deal of interest in basketball and also have a great amount of potential. This squad is good training for those who will be trying out for a var- sity position. The C-team sched- ule includes Milan, Sunman, North Dearborn, and Richmond. Coach of the C-tcam is Mr. Yarber. C-Team Batesville “A” freshmen fin- ished their best season ever with a 12-4 record. Only one of these losses came after Christmas. Mike Bauman and Ted Weigel led the team in scoring. The reserve freshmen team finished with a 3-5 record. Managers were Butch Shook, Joe Mack, and Dan Flodder. The freshmen are under the leadership of Mr. Raver. 77 Freshmen Bulldogs Have A Disappointing Season . . Ron Laker leaps for the jump ball as the mighty Bulldogs get ready to do bat- tle with Brookville. “Hey, they’re our Bulldogs!!” Keith, Greg, Charlie, and Ken are introduced at the beginning of a varsity game. Rick Meyer, at the free-throw line, takes careful aim to add points for the Dogs. 78 End Of Year Record Was 10-12 Charlie Giesting, heads above the rest, adds another two points against the Greyhounds. Ron Laker goes for the basket as Ken (10), Charlie (34), and Greg (32) look on. 79 Dave Maple goes up for his famous jump shot. 80 81 Rushvillc Singles Double Singles Doubles Liberty Singles Doubles Greensburg Singles Doubles Hagerstown Doubles Brookville Singles Doubles 82 Dogs 57 Lawrcnceburg 12 Dogs 44 Liberty 17 Dogs 52 North Decatur 12 Dogs 19 Jennings Co. 44 Dogs 19 Rushville 40 Dogs 42 Greensburg 12 Dogs 40 Triton Central 15 Dogs 35 Lawrcnccburg 27 Dogs 30 North Decatur 21 83 1972 Varsity am L Here we go Bulldogs Here we go! This all- familiar yell led by our spirited cheerleaders inspired the football and basketball teams to many exciting victories. They come through you but not from you, and though they are with you, yet they belong not to you. 114 You may give them your love but not your thoughts. For they have their own thoughts. 115 You may house their bodies but not their souls, for their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
