SENIORS SENIOR QUEENS BERTY SEEVERS Berty was chosen by the Senior members of the football team to act as queen of the '52 home- coming. Ginny was elected to represent Batesville in the Pumpkin Queen Contest at Versailles by the Senior Class CLASS HISTORY In the year of 1949 we gathered as fresh- menin the Hall of Fame B.H.S. to register. We were 18 short of a hundred. Our first class meeting was held in the gym, where we be- came familiar with our sponsors and elected our officers: President, Jerry Carel; Vice Pre- sident, Ace Moorman; Secretary, Mary Lou Huneke; Treasurer, Nancy Broerman. The year was started by a party following an initiation conducted by the seniors. The entertainment consisted of a square dance and refreshments. Under the supervision of Miss Wonningand Mrs. Anderson our first class party was held in the gym. There we played games, dancedand were servedice-co ld pop and ice cream for refresh- ments. Another year slipped by in the Hall of Fame and found us sophomores. There were now 66 of us. Gone from our group were: Jerry Carel, Raymond Frye, Mike Glaub, Wilfred Gram- man, Blaine Herd, Paul Harping, Catherine Holtel, Loretta Hunefeld, Sally Kester, Sabra McCullough, Leo Merkel, Margie Meyer Helen Moorman, Ray Obermeyer, Henry Riley, Arthur Simmermeyer, Mary Frances Wilson, Clara Wissel, and Paul Wissel. To fill in two of the vacancies we added Ronald Lloyd from Cincinnati and Rose Mary Dovis from Rich- mond. Our officers were: President, Connie Schulte; Vice President, Nancy Broerman; Secretary, Bill Fisher; Treasurer, Arnie Wehr. The highlight of our year was the Biology Trip to Chicago, chaperoned by Mr. Hamblin and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. There we spent three never-to-be-forgotten days of educational sight-seeing and enjoyment. We started our junior year with five more classmates missing: Clarence Collins, Karla Kealen, Nancy Riley, Connie Schulte, and Paul White. Frances Kitchen from Brookville and Maurice Schoettelkotte from St. Peters joinedour group. We elected ournew officers: President, Ace Moorman; Vice President, Bill Fisher; Secretary, Nancy Broerman; and Trea- surer, Pete Wintz. Our sponsors were Mr. Gehring and Miss Davis. Our junior play, Riddle Me Riches , under the directionof Mr. Boyer, was a huge success. One of the main events of the year was the selection of our class rings. After much thought and consideration we chose a bulldog face flanked by the nu- merals 1953. An oriental atmosphere prevaded the evening of May 15, as Chinese Lanterns dimly lighted the music-filled dance floor. The throne on which the queen, Bertha Dwen- ger, was crowned was a Buddha harmonizing well with the theme. After the prom the sen- ior class enjoyeda movie at the Gibson Theater sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Com- merce. Our class trip never hada dull moment from the time we boarded the bus at 6:00 A. M. for LeSourdsville Lake until our feet were again on Batesville soil. At the close of our junior year we sadly but anxiously looked fo- ward to 1952-53 which would be our last year at the Hall of Fame. As time moves fast the summer was soon over our senior year was upon us. Two of our classmates Frances Kitchen and Elizabeth Yorn were gone from our group. We selected our officers: President, Ace Moorman; Vice President, Pete Wintz; Secretary, Mar- garet Kappes; Treasurer, Barb Biehl. With the help of our sponsors, Mr. Frushour and Mr. Smith we proceeded to acquaint ourselves with the freshmen through the process of ini- tiation. On the morning of February 11, we journeyed tolndianapolisto see our state leg- islature in action. In the afternoon various trips were scheduled through insurance offices, department stores, TV stations, etc. Some of the most pleasant memories of the year in- cluded the planning and producing of our Sen- ior Play, putting together the 1953 Bulldog, and being the honor guests at the Junior-Senior Prom. As the year drew to a close we began planning our senior trip and graduation cere- monies. We wish toextend our thanks and ap- preciation to the Batesville High School fa- culty and members of the student body who helped to make these four years, four of the most pleasant years of our life. SeMh FltLD TRIP Wednesday, February 11, at 8:15 A.M, the senior class chartered two buses to Indianapolis to visit the state legislature. Oh, Happy Day: Off from school: And Oh, Happy Day” was just one of the songs they sang as they chanted every popular piece they knew on their way to the big city. The group arrived at the Indiana State House at approximately 10 o'clock, The Capitol hasn't been the same since; not after the senior class of 53 was turned loose there. However, the majority of theclass didsee someinteresting things. Most of the class saw the replica of the Liberty Bell which was in one of the lower halls, Before the class took the trip, Pages were selected to assist Representative Dunbar in the House of Represen- tatives, These Pages were Mary Lou Huneke, Nancy Broerman, Berty Seevers, and Jinny Suding. The class elected these girls from a total of nine girls who were nominated. While waiting to go into watch the House in action, some of the group went down and watched both houses of the General Assembly in action from the floor, Aftera long waiting period, the class was admitted to seats over- looking the House, Whilewatching the Representatives discussing and voting on bills, the class was recognized by Representative Dunbar, After lunch the group had three alternatives, They could go on tour through Wasson's Department Store, Indian- apolis Star News, or go shopping. The tour to Wasson's was planned to disclose the behind the scenes activity at Wasson's Department Store. This was attended by a group of girls from the Shorthand and Bookkeeping classes, During the afternoon they visited the fur repair shop and fur storage vaults. Then they took in the office division, Here the girls visited the Accounts Receivable Department, Advertising Department, and the Billing Department, They also visited the Receiving Department of the store, The tour was conducted by the assistant training instructor, and proved to be very inter- esting and educational, Another group of seniors took a tour through the Indianapolis Star News, and the Radio Station WIRE. This trip was taken under the sponsorship of Mr. Brokamp. The offices, at first, gave the impression of confusion, but after a little study the group saw that the confusion was really very efficient, everything was planned to get the news out speedily, There were many different kinds of machines in the office such as the teletype, and many kinds of typewriters, There were many different desks for the different departments, It was interesting to see how the paper was put together and printed. After the news is gathered the type is assembled into a story and then isstereotyped, from which it is printed, The presseshere can turnout 42,000 com- plete papers in an hour, The group also visited the radio station WIRE, which is connected with the Star News, although there was no broadcast from the studio at that time, The guide told the group about the Newsboys’ Band from the Star and News, This band is one of the traditions of Indianapolis and broadcasts from WIRE, All in all this was a very fascinating tour, Still a far greater number of the class took the last alternative and went shopping, At 3:45 P.M. the class boarded the buses again and were on their merry way home, The buses pulled up to Batesville High School at approximately 5:30. Johnny Wintz, ourefficienteditor, who had the camera of our ef- ficient faculty sponsor, Mr, Bigham, didn't get a picture, He never did explain satisfactorily exactly what went wrong, Incidentally, it rained all day, rig A“ 5 re t. 4 JR.
