No ghostly waiter I lightly steps out from the dusk I in time, and this hungriness will make my feet grow roots, to tap the ground for water, not receiving and Iill still stay, oh yes, until the sky through condensation pours down like midnight soup, and Moon will freeze . into a plate and drop into my lap, to hold the stars I'll have all to myself, to eat. . - Eliza Richards Flight How much is the show I said to the bird. A COLL0llU IU M he Colloquium on Nuclear Weapons and Arms Control was a year long series of events aimed at ex- ploring the nuclear predicament in a non-partisan well-rounded manner. The Colloquium was oriented around a series of six major speakers. Each speaker represented a different view- point and had previous experience with issues that were part of the nuclear predicament. Dispersed among the ma- jor lectures were other events which used a broad spectrum of media such as painting and informed discussion sec- tions to further explore the nuclear issues. The planning committee hoped that the Colloquium was informative and ex- citing. We were thankful for the oppor- tunity to contribute our energies toward giving Bates College and the surround- ing community an opportunity for a comprehensive overview and detailed exploration of the nuclear predicament. While ignorance may be bliss with nuclear weapons, it is also folly. As responsible individuals we cannot afford the potential costs of being uninformed. Our thanks to all who made this Collo- quium possible! -- Joel Page Members of Nuclear Colloquium Planning Committee Martha Clary Cheryl Crouteau John Cutler Bill Driscoll Ruth Killough Russ Forman Barry French Martha Elbaum Eric Hamilton Charlene Floyd Peter Kessen Ellen Landy Dru Jaffe John Luddy Alex Johnston Meg McNamara Diane Olivera Mark Payne Joel Page Sam Smith John Rooks Joe Zaia Mary Ann Whitney Jed Wright Eric Price Prof. Eric Wollman Prof. Tom Tracy Prof. Garold Thumm Grant Reynolds Reverend Richard Crocker Reveren General Gordon Fornell Bruce Russet CJRGANIZATICDNS .lj is wi . Despite a tie and four losses by a touchdown or less, the fighting Bobcats met each week with great enthusiasm. ln the Bowdoin game, the team's true talent showed as Bates left Brunswick with a 33-15 victory. The veteran line included Dan Botsch, Don McDonough, John Raitt, and tailback Charlie Richard- son, who became the school's second all-time leading rusher. Blocking for Richardson was tight end captain Dan Miller, the team's leading receiver. Also receiving for the Bobcats were Bill Duffy and Mark Livsey, who performed exceptionally in the Amherst game. Defen- M sively, Bates was led by linebackers Dave Hild and T Rico Corsetti. Corsetti was the Northeast's leading tackler. Starting quarterback for the season was Jeff McLucos. Boettcher. three-game win streak near the end of the season boosted Bates to its best record ever C7-53 in women's soccer and nearly earned the Bobcats a NIAC tourney bid. The Bobcats were 'anked number five in the NIAC. The Bates defense turned in three shutouts and held opponents to one goal in four other matches. Senior Laury Schwartzberg and freshman Linda Stanley were the offensive-standouts, and freshman Stephanie Smith enjoyed a solid season in goal. 9 -pq or the second straight year the Bates field hockey team won the Maine intercollegiate championship, capping yet another strong season for the Bobcats. After three 10 minute over- times, it ironically took a penalty-stroke shot by Meg Flaherty to clinch the win over Bowdoin Ca similar scenario occurred as a loss for Bates last year in a championship match against Tuftsb. Bates also went to the NIAC Tournament in the third seed position, but lost a strong game to second-seeded Smith 1-0. Statistically the Bobcats excelled over the Unicorns. Nevertheless, Bates ranked eighth in the nation in the final NCAA Division Ill coaches poll. The excellent 10-2-3 season was led by Sue Halliday, Carla Fitzgerald and Sue Chick who were named to the all-Maine team. Doing an exceptional job as goalie was Barbara Kim. Great plays by seniors Meg Flaherty, Sue Miller, Sydnee Brown, Fitzgerald and Halliday will be sorely missed next year. Front Row: S. Brown, J. Spardurcia, S. Halliday, E. Bailey, B. Kim, C.
