' AQ - 324 4 Admissions Admissions Envelope upon envelope piled high like the snow in late Ianuary, each addressed to Admissions Office Bates College Each containing something more than a transcript, SAT scores, class rank and grades, a record of courses, a few meager essays, questions answered. Perhaps the sum is greater than the total of its parts after all. For in each envelope is, in fact, the essence of a being. A human being, age seventeen or eighteen - too young to get into a bar - much less a college. And yet they have tasted life, and gathered from it some essential ingredients, have they not? The Admissions Office becomes a sieve of sorts, which must capture, ultimately, only pure, refined, true Batesie material, and strain away the rest. tibia- Q.. ik -N I ,I 573214, an -gli' :K HHJY' 'wg V' . , - tiff: 1 ' L' , .-, ,.'N0P' X5. At the last sound, Edward stooped to gather his bundles. His plastic gym bag had begun to snap with age and exposure to years of harsh winters, allowing worn newspapers to peek through the holes. Systematically he prepared for the journey, first secur- ing the gym bag in his left hand. Carefully rolling a loose stack of newspapers into a tight bundle, he inched the packet deep into a coat pocket. Last he slipped on a balding aviator style hood. The frazzled material hung in strips over his forehead like bangs - a grey frame for a grey face. Week old beard stubble crept across his chin, almost to the cap's flaps. Harshly cut wrinkles forked in jagged streaks across the remaining skin. Blue eyes flickered to their reflec- tion in the church window: he scrutinized the slightly blurred replica of himself, sucking in his stomach and thrusting his chest for- ward as they had taught him in the army. Everything must be perfectly timed, Spinney. Perfect-ly timed, a voice drummed in his ears. A sharp bullet of pain shot through his The General by Gail F ons forehead. He moaned, shook his head, and dashed off the steps. No more war, no more remembering. I never existed then, he told himself. Once the memories had evaporated, Edward slowed his pace, and shuffled up Main Street. Evening was approaching, and the view from the church steps grew dull after dark. As much as people liked to stare at Edward in his unusual attire, he liked to look right back at them. Reading, too, kept him amused. He couldn't be without a newspaper, no matter how outdated the issue. Slowly Edward moved toward the college where there were more people to watch in- stead of blaring headlights and an oc- casional scurrying figure. The late afternoon sun pressed dully against his heavy canvas over- coat. Often people would point at him for wearing it during the summer months, but Edward didn't really care. It made him feel as though he were sacrificing something, suffering perhaps for the good of another. He thought of when he was style- conscious, and would wear only what the fashion magazines dictated. His scalp began to tingle, and quickly he made the vision of his youth disappear. Afta'noon, Gen'ral, a voice mumbled from a doorway. Edward glanced to the source and nodded to the disheveled figure. Ya wanna sip? the man waved a bottle filled with oil-colored fluid. Edward smiled at the man's generosi- ty, but continued onward, watching the shifting patterns of greyed pan- cakes of bubblegum on the sidewalk as he moved uphill. It was a short walk, and soon after his conversation with the old man, Edward had arrived at the college. Plush green lawns surrounded the stately brick buildings. In the midst of the campus was the snack bar. Ed- ward aimed his steps toward here, pausing inside the door to snatch up a discarded newspaper. When he entered the room, a woman in a green smock whispered loudly to her trainee, Whatever you do, don't ever charge him for his meals. He's Ed- ward Spinney, one of the Spinneys - the ones that gave all that money to the college. Smiling, she turned to take Ed- ward's order, patiently deciphering his mumbling. Usually Edward didn't like to waste time, but he was always polite to the women at the college. After all, they fed him without charge. He knew there was a reason for their kindness, but it hurt to try and remember. He ate at the snack bar every night, rarely staying at his house. Usually he would only wander inside to deposit a fresh pile of newspapers when his pockets and the bag overflowed. Unless the weather was extremely harsh, he would sleep on the front porch. The overcoat provided him with enough warmth, and he could wake early and watch the morning commuters as he read a paper. Edward glanced about the restaurant. It was quiet in the early evening. The students were upstairs eating in the dining hall, and only a few finicky souls had wandered to the snack bar. In the corner a young coupled gig- gled over a bowl of tangled fren- chfries. He squinted to see their faces. Clara had been his first real love. They had met during high school, but he hadn't seen her since the month after his return from the war. This time he winced softly as the throbbing in his head began. Plung- ing a gnarled hand deep into his pocket, he fished out the newly found paper. Social hour at the snack bar soon arrived, and Edward quickly left I . X t S - I f f' f , ,y .315 ,cf I, I. E.. .jj , X F .A ., ' ,Q ,aw before it became too noisy. A few of the janitors were friendly to him, so he wandered upstairs, thirsty for con- versation. Tonight Charlie was work- ing, or at least he was on duty. Ed- ward went over to the couch where Charlie was sitting, his plump face flickering in the television's pale gaze. Evenin', Ed. Why dontcha set yahself right down herah, and watch a bit of the television with me? Charlie flashed a strip of yellow teeth and patted the chair next to him. Ed- ward grinned faintly, and sank into the seat. An advertisement for diapers was on, and he watched in mixed horror and revulsion as a row of rashy bot- toms flashed on the screen. He snickered and whispered to Charlie, I wonder what they'll do next. His mouth clamped shut when his eyes returned to the television screen. In dagger-like formation airplanes swooped low in a blackened sky. The deep-toned narrator began, February 1945. Germany was weakening, but the Allied Forces needed to make a decisive move to gain enough momentum to win the war. A man named Edward Spinney provided the answer - firebombing, a tactic so deadly that it provided the Allies with the crucial edge, and Ma- jor Spinney was given the title of General Spinney by Winston Chur- chill himself. Under the clever guidance of General Spinney, the city of Dresden, Germany was completely leveled. Over one hundred thousand were dead. Injuries exceeded the deaths by exponential figures. The Allies moved in . . Edward shook himself out of the frozen state the television program had thrown him into. Squeezing his eyes tightly to obliterate the sight of the charred smoking buildings and mutilated bodies, he ran frantically for his house. Charlie's concerned shouts were muffled by his drum- ming feet. Tears oozed from his eyes. Out of breath and shaken with sobs, he fell onto the porch. Half an hour later, numbed by his tears, Edward wandered inside. He'd check the newspapers, he thought to himself. They'd prove that the broad- caster had been lying, and then he'd be all right. He checked paper after paper, pile after pile, headline after headline. An hour later, printed in a newspaper sandwiched between a grimy yello tier, he found it. Angry black letters marched across the top of the page, HDRESDEN TORCHED! ALLIED FORCES TRIUMPH! Another one read, GENERAL ED- WARD SPINNEY BLASTS A VIC- TORY FOR THE ALLIES. No, no, no, he moaned hollowly. His words echoed through the empty bedrooms and vaporized. He held his hands to his forehead and screamed. The room darkened and disappeared. Crisp morning sunlight splashed through the window. Edward ad- justed his tie carefully in the hallway mirror. Placing the generals cap on his neatly arranged hair, he rubbed his smoothly shaven chin and sneered at his reflection. He stepped out into the daylight, pausing to kick a stack of withered newspapers off the porch as he passed. Yes, he knew who he was - General Edward Spinney - mastermind behind one of the most gruesome mass murders in history. His heels clicked as he moved down the steps. 5.-,S -,S i,'.fQ'fn. -. V '. The 1982 W0men's Cross Country Team can boast of the most successful season to date. Under the direction of Coach Carolyn Court, the team completed the season with a 9-3 record, captured the C.B.B. Conference title for the fourth consecutive year, and placed third in the Division III New England Championships. The team was paced by the consistant top finishes of 1981 All American Rebecca Watt '85, and promising sophomore Nancy Bell '85. Watt and Bell were named to both the All NESCAC and All State Cross Country Teams with their third and fourth place finishes respectively in each. Bell concluded her season by placing 18th in the Open New England Cham- pionships, 8th in the Divisions III New England Champion- ships, and 32nd in the NCAA Division III Nationals. Watt had an equally impressive season by finishing first for Bates in all regular season meets, placing 27th in the Open New England Championships, and 11th in the Division III New Englands. Pam Fessenden '83 led the team as captain for her second year in a row. Consistantly a scorer in every contest during her four years here, she was Bates' first four year letter win- ner in Cross Country. Pauline Vashon '83 while only having competed for the team for two years, lettered each year. Underclassmen who added the essential depth to the team in- cluded Betty Barr '86, Ann Walsh '84, Pamela Levin '85, and Heidi Hersant '85. This years team has established a strong foundation for a promising future. The atheletes are young, dedicated, and have demonstrated a tremendous amount of potential. You get to meet some great people and some lifelong friendships develop.' '...' 'Until now, only the Irish knew about all of these advantages' '...' 'Theres no excuse not to join. The enlightened dozen who played volleyball during the 1982 season realized more than the advantages cited by Ms. O'Connell. The veterans returned in good condition with senior co-captains Sarah Eusden and Megan Shea leading the assaults on Mt. David, Montello Hill, Thorncrag and by way of relief, Cote's. Newcomers included four freshmen, two tranfers, and seven new upperclassmen. A 0-0 tie with Middlebury and lunch with Presi- dent Reynolds started the Bobcats off to their most successful season ever. In one game, versus Thomas College, the team scored as many goals as in the en- tire two years previous. Against regionally and na- tionally ranked opponents, the Bates defense held without a score the entire first half. 5-6-1 was the final record, leaving .500 for next year's achievement. Freshman Denise Barton was named an All-New England fullback, the first at Bates. Transfer Laury Schwartzberg tied the all-time scoring record, Megan Shea bolstered her assist championship, and sophomore back Ieanmarie Hester excelled in whatever statistics were left. Without a returning goalkeeper, newcomer Valerie Greene sprouted hands, captured 121 balls, and won five games. The most goal productive class ever leaves several challenges behind. Can anyone play as gusty soccer as Kamikaze Kathy Rose? Will anyone return from a years absence like Sarah Iameson and Doria Kutrubes? And finally, who will ever set the pace like Sarah Eusden and Megan Shea? First reseason brought the old timers back For physicals with jan and double sessions with Yak. From t e start it was FUN. We're having a good time , We said as we ran those miles for time. It Was worth it though cause at the end of the week We had a barbecue with April for our Labor Day treat. Next on the scene came the freshman class. Then we had to work hard 'cause they ran really fast! For our first big contest against tough competition We made the customary Smith expedition. There we breezed ri ht by Williams and Wheaton And after Amherst andgSmith we were still unbeaten. We returned to face Middlebury for the first win of the year, Clinching for Yakawonis the 99th of her career. Number 100 was even more glorious Cause over Sal and her Polar Bears we were victorious! We had caligraphy, roses, champagne and tears To celebrate the success of the past fifteen years. Then Wheaton was the next team to go And if not for those two minutes we would've had UMO. Tufts came out strong, but we came back stronger, Thanks to a penalty stroke and stickers we lasted much longer. First in Division II had been Bentley's claim to fame. Then our parents watched us beat them 3-1 in the rain. After a five-nothing showing at UMF Gordon tied it up with only seven seconds left. Despite a noble effort aglainst Division I Holy Cross We went down fighting ut came put with a oss. We were hit pretty hard by USM But we had a short vacation once we beat them. After spaghetti and cupcakes for fuel We romped all over those Colby Mules! At Nasson we revitalized our attack, Scoring six goals, and just in time for NIACs. We waited to hear, quite anxiously, Who our opponents for the semi's would be. Trinity came because Tufts didn't win And we greeted them with Tootsie Pops at Iohn Martin's Inn. We scored two quick goals without hesistation And held them to one with our determination. Tufts downed Smith so the finals were here, And some 300 fans came to cheer. We certainly outplayed them in everyones eyes. There has to be a better way to break ties. But we sure weren't finished winning still. The States were a dream we had ylet to fulfill. Force that third gartyu, became t e game plan. At practice we di strokes and the de ense ran. UMO edges UMF , the headlines read. So, Bates is seeded first , Stella McLean said. UMF looked for an upset and was playing fairly well Until we turned on the steam and 8-1 they fell. Then to the finals, hosted b Sal. She can even paint lines. Oh what a gal!!! With us to Bowdoin came the hardcore fans To cheer us on in our final stand. li Score Board Bates Opponent 2 Middlebury 1 3 Colby 0 4 I Bowdoin 1 2 ! So many things deserved celebration And had been a source of inspiration. Our mega-awesome coaches, Yak, Sof and Anne, And all of the trainers, es ecially Ian. Have Some Fun and Sandy of the Day Are just a few things that helped us on our way. The season has been great in all res ects, And ffioking back we have nothing to regret. Led by tri-captains Ed Cushing, Kevin Downie and Robbie I-Ioades the Bobcats did have some close and exciting games. Their first win came early in the season against Norwich. Another memorable contest was with the undefeated University of Maine at Farmington. The Farm- ington team's last season game was on the Bobcat home field. While Bates dominated most of the game by keeping the ball in control, UMF did manage one successful break away resulting in a goal and a 1-0 win for UMF. However the Bobcat's well deserved reward for a de- manding season was an exciting 2-1 victory over Bowdoin. A fine example of the team's perseverance and spirit was Thomas Mclnerney. He earned the senior award for his leadership effort and outstanding ability. I r 1 it Front Row: T. Mclnerney, M. Restani, M. Eisenfeld, S. Wright, A. Kaplan, C. Ciszewski, M. Iohnson, E. Stone.
