The first arrivals were the sports teams, and the RC's and lA's, immediately followed by 418 new faces belonging to freshmen. Those first few days were dedicated to orientation, meeting new people and preparing for the onslaught of upper-classmen and hard work just around the cor- ner. X arious activities were planned, including convocation, the Lake Auburn cookout, and a discussion of The Culture of Nar- cissism which all supposedly had read. -Xll too soon, Sept. 7 arrived, and before we knew it, classes had started and summer was behind us. The social year began with a bang, as Lines played the freshman mixer and all manner of Batesies paraded to the Goose, the Station, and the Cage to pay early respects. The Film Board treated us to The Deer Hunter, kicking off another year of fine movie entertainment. The Bates lnvitational women's cross-country race opened the fall sports season, and frosh Rebecca Watt set a new college women's record for the SOOO-meter run. Campus groups recruited new blood to bolster their programs, and so did the Red Cross with its first blood drive. FIELD HOCKEY Season records never seem to be a true estimation of a team's success, as is the case for the 1981 Bates Women's Field Hockey Team. Boasting a winning record of 7-3-5, Coach Sherry Yakawonis and the H1981 Touring Squad were winners in many dif- ferent senses. The Middlebury and Bowdoin games are good examples in which the team gave their all and played well. Winning the CBB championship was also a significant achievement of the season. This year marked the first, in a while, in which there was a backbone of strong senior players, including captain julie Thorton, who provided a great deal of leadership both on and off the field. Selected for the Northeast Squad were Carolyn Campbell, '83, Tracey Dolan, '83, Laurie Sevigny, '83, Melissa Chace, '82, and janet Bursaw, '83. Bursaw also traveled to Florida for the Nationals where she played for the Northeast 113 team. It was, in every respect, a successful season. Oooh - good- bye Purdue! . .3 . ,Ag , we 1. W0 EN'S SCCCER September practice brought together a strong group of return- ing players and a talented freshman class. For the Women's Soc- cer team, improving on last year's 1-9 record was to be an easy task. The payoffs for a year's learning were defeats of Colby- Sawyer, Wheaton, and Colby Qtwicel. Senior forward Laura Radack became Bates' all-time scoring leader, netting a game-winning goal against Colby. joining Radack on the All-New England and All-East ballots were junior halfback Sarah Eusden. Eusden's consistently strong play engineered a short-passing attack from the midfield. Freshman fullbacks Colleen Martin and Karla Austen helped senior goalkeeper Kris Pearson convert danger in the backfield to Bobcat possession. Though losing the valued leadership of senior captains Dorothy Alpert, Cathy Campos, and Laura Radack, the Women's Soccer team looks forward to a bright future. The team was led by seniors Brian O'Donnell lco- captl, Andy Aceto fco-captl, Nick Kent, lim Merrill and by CBB All-Stars, Bill Hunt '84 and Michael Eisenfeld '85. Playing against the likes of 3-time national champion Babson, national finalist Brandeis and NAIA power USM., the Bobcats lost four 1-O games and their character was severely tested. However, with the support of two outstanding goalies, Rob Hodes '83 and Thomas McQuillan '85, the Bobcats' defense re- mains sound while the scoring attack will be uplifted by the seasoning of Coach jeff Gettler's young squad. A number of injuries among the top performers resulted in a lack of depth. Senior captain Paul Ham- mond, previous All-American, was one of those sidelined due to in- jury: his talent will be sorely missed after closing out a truly remarkable career. Also, the man who could run forever, Mark Dorion, has graduated after performing superbly for Bates. However, the future of Bates Cross-Country looks promising because the squad consists of a core of underclassmen who will develop with each year. Peter Weyand '83 will be back in 1982 to complete his eligibility, other key harriers returning next season will be sophomores Ken O'Regan, Fred Turkington, and Len Morley. Despite the 4-5-1 record fincluding a one-point loss to Amherst and a tie with U. of New Brunswickj, the overall history of Bates X-Country still sparkles - it stands at 215 wins, 60 loses and 3 ties since it joined the intercollegiate ranks in 1958 under present coach, Walt Slovenski. A thrilling come- from-behind home victory over M.l.T. avenged last years loss in Cambridge, while a dramatic 9-8 squeaker at Colby marked the first season in which Bates defeated the Mules twice. Senior co-captain, Dave Scheetz, led the offense, despite being the focus of every opponent's defense. jeff Melvin, senior co-captain, anchored a strong backfield corp. Both men were selected for the Senior East-West All Star Game, Scheetz will graduate as Bates' all-time leading scorer. The team's performance was hindered by injuries to key players such as sophomore Dave Hild and freshman Andy Morehouse. Fortunately, the experience of seniors Kraig Haynes, lud Hale, lohn Hassan, Dede Soeharto, and Ken Swan along with the rest of the 1982 squad kept Bates Lacrosse headed in the right direction. ,f .r? s4Q9na- 49 1 4-fmrye, 'Nanf' - ......4.. .-Ku. 172 l i ..inasaseegeaaaesaaaaaaazzsae n x!,lllla mug... gggul' rx 4 . illlll M,.g:::g.:s:eeQ-------:ease 'vention ' QIUU' ' ' ' uunsnuinutli' c .iiiff 5511. nuvrw!:lx.If' Q 'VU' 2, 'llllllllllll.
