Quarterback Chuck Laurie, threw 5 touchdown passes, tying a New England record, and won the prestigious Golden Helmet Award as Bates rolled over Union, 48-32 in the opener. Other memorable victories included a first-ever win over Amherst, 10-8, a 27-20 vic- tory over Colby, and a 24-14 thrashing of Bowdoin. The season ended on a heartbreaking note as the team fell short of upsetting Tufts and ex-coach Vic Gatto in an emotional thriller. The final score was 16-14. -aww : '- ' t in ru -4...- I-55 lib? Despite the absence of All-American Greg Peters, the harriers once again proved they are one of the top squads in New England. Co- captains Kim Wettlauffer and Tom Cloutier continually led the team along with the rest of the pack . The Bobcats finally gave up their stranglehold of the state title by falling to a surprising Maine team. They unofficially won the NESCAC meet held at Hamilton as Wettlauffer placed first. ln addition, they came in third in the lC4A meet and fifth in the New Englands. Wettlauffer capped off a brilliant season by attaining All American honors. Everyone will return to next years squad except senior jay Ferguson. 76 B! 'l - ' iq , . Q. .gum rs Srl. 'T .Ev ,i ff.. ,. Zane Rodriguez had a particularly excellent season for the Bobcats. ln addi- tion to outstanding results at the carnivals, Rodriguez placed second in the Eastern Nordic Championships and seventeenth in jumping at the Nationals in Colorado. His seventeenth place finish ranked third among Americans in a sport dominated by foreigners. Captain Dave Frost was in the top twenty at several carnivals, including fourteenth at Williams. john Fitz, Dave Nordstrom, and Bill Davies also skied well for Bates. An outstanding season was the way in which Coach Bob Flynn described the women's ski team's efforts this year. In their first year in Division I, the women met the challenge and finished well in many meets, including a second place finish at Colby-Sawyer. The only senior on the team, Co-captain Laurie Schultz, skied well and be- came the first recipient of the College Club Award for ski- ing. All in all, it was an excellent year for the Bobcat ski team, one of the best ever according to Coach Flynn. 'Q C I .35- X. x c 2 2 BATES I ij , tl 1. A 'wa-.J-1' 0 J -or . 1 1 - 'v 0 5 F , 2 5:.' The Bates Student Communications Award given to Richard Nixon for efforts and successes in the field of international communications on the 26th of February was supposed to be the first of four annual awards, but after the uproar of dissaproval it became difficult to find anyone who would accept any further Student awards. The other three catagories were to be national politics, journalism, and campus activities. When prospective honor-recipient, Senator Edward Kennedy, denied any knowledge of the award it became apparent that the Communications Awards should be allowed to die a natural death. So, Stu- dent Editor, Robert Cohen, made no further mention of any annual award. The front page story in The Bates Student on March 2, 1979 was the first that most Batesies had ever heard of any award to Nixon. That same day a sneering AP article ap- peared on page two of The Boston Globe and in papers all over the country. The Bates community was hurt, frus- trated, and infuriated. Most believed that regardless of the merit of the recipient, the presentation was improper in using the name of the College. The award plaque displayed a representation of the Bates seal, and the words Bates College in bold letters. Many felt that the integrity of the Bates community had been cheapened by association. In consecutive conferences with the press on March 6th, first Rob Cohen and then spokesmen for the student body told their respective sides of the story. The editor of The vt' Q x l l 1 l an N' Student defended his motives and suggested that the stu- dent protest was merely a case of jumping on a bandwagon led by a small, vindictive minority. In the following press conferences president of the RA., lack Meade, read a statement disassociating the student body from any honor presented by The Bates Student to Richard Nixon, or any- one else. A summary article in The New York Times said, 'lMr. Cohen was all smiles when he had his picture taken with the former President, but there were no smiles on the faces of some 500 of his fellow students who demonstrated this week against his honoring Mr. Nixon. Both sides soon saw that the best course of action was no action, and like most controversies at Bates College, it soon faded away. Sim I 1 W +A 7 H .zria ' 1 - .LF R-' FU 145-IT.
