However, like so many other campuses, the sounds and sights of change invaded the campus this spring. The pictures chosen to repre- sent the Mirror theme will hopefully serve as reminders of the Bates of our day and as comparisons to the Bates of the future. Dedication August Buschmann, Associate Professor of German In the college community today, it is difficult to find a man who is completely dedicated to the institution he senfes and to the students he teaches. Professor Buschmann is such a man. Since 1928 he has served well the students, the college and the community. lt is certainly appropriate to to dedicate the 1971 Mirror to Professor Buschmann who for so many years has been a part of Bates. The Mirror wishes Professor and Mrs. Buschmann the very best. Auf Wiedersehen Herr Buschmann. Table of Contents Bates Life .... . . 6 Seniors . . . Things get lost in the pile of pictures and papers, and pencils have a habit of moving themselves. Then comes the major problem of who is going to write the copy. The bills go out and the business man- ager hopes the money comes in. lt seems like it will never end. But finally that last page is done and we can only hope that the finished product will look like we had hoped it would when we began. ff? ' ': Q L -., A,,.A- 1 ,. T X5 I Y A V I . . Along with a rather one-sided victory in the State Meet, the runners looked impressive in the post-season competition, notably their fifth-place finish in the ICAAAA meet at New York. The runners were led throughout the season by Senior Neill Miner, the Team Captain, who finished first in three meets and second in four others. The other seniors on the team, Steve Fillow and Jim Leahy, also contributed greatly to the team's success, particularly in the State Meet. N ' x t X H ck Nlanxa, a specialist in wood carving and 4 sculpture and a native of Brazil, spent three months at Bates as Artist-In-Residence. I L ff ,Y wr' Short Term Fun and the sun have always been synonymous with short term, but this year short term brought many changes to Bates. The academic peace of the campus was invaded by the sounds of jack hammers and shovels as the remodeling of Chase Hall began. Tradition was also broken as Roger Bill, Hedge and Page became coed dorms on a trial basis. The courses offered during the short term also differed from the regular college courses. These included an archeological dig offered by the history department, an English course in cinema, biology field trips on bats and micro-organisms, and a mural project on Lisbon Street by the art department. 5A ,Q .
