It seldom reveals the frustration of a seemingly unfathomable problem or the exhilaration of an eventual solution. It only skims the surface of a deep and lasting friendship with a professor. a roommate. or a classmate. Yet there are memories which spring to life within its pages: the distinctive pose of a favorite prof. the fellowship of a club meeting. the crarnming in the libe. that longed-for den break. the eternal bull session back in the donn. the hopes and disappointments of a close football game. the excitement of a big weekend. These are the things we have chosen to tell our story. And while what we say is not so different. the way we have said it is new in many ways. NYC can only hope it will be received as enthusiastically as it was produced. 3 01' YI' T Q - I - .9 , - r-'is ' L . 4 . '.. I .,,. 1 t X +2 Castolene were HOW LITTLE DAVID, N OT ONCE, BUT THREE TIMES SLEW GOLIATH They quietly showered and dressed in an atmosphere of de- feat. Within twenty minutes from the time that the Black Bears entered the locker room, they were speeding meekly down the highway away from Bates. IiVithin one afternoon a scrappy, highly-underrated Garnet eleven pushed a mighty power from the University of Maine all over the grid iron. The results: a thirteen to thirteen tie, which does not half indicate the story. From the moment that All-New England end Paul Castolene gracefully pulled down a lofty pass from Swift Hathaway, a feeling of tense excitement flew through almost three thousand spectators jammed into Garcelon Field. On that chilly, fall afternoon, an undefeated, untied Yankee Conference Cham- pion obtained its only blemish. YVithin two hours the Bobcats so stunned the Maine giant that they never were to recover. IVithin two hours the unorthodox Hatch offense received .na- tional acclaim. But had it not been. for an almost heroic effort by the starting eleven, the new offense could never have clicked. IN'hat were the results achieved by this unusual football team? Paul Planchon. Howard Vandersea. and Paul Castolene, all achieved All-Maine honors. Howard Vandersea achieved sec- ond team All-New England distinction. Ed Wilson was received as an All-East guard. Paul Castolene, besides being voted to the All-New England first team, was first in New England and tenth in the nation in pass-receiving. Sure that it could never happen again, a boastful Maine Winter Track squad. almost four months later, traveled to Bates. only to be frustrated once again by a very gallant Bates Team: the score: 67e55. The score neither indicates how Peter Schuyler came from behind three times to thoroughly defeat nationally ranked Kimball in a 4:22 mile: nor does it indicate that the meet was not decided until the Hnal exciting minutes ,eww of competition. It took Bob Kramer's first place vault to climax W! what had been a do-or-die effort by the Bobcats. As coach Qvsxhr' Q Slovenski was hoisted into the air by his proud team, a feeling :xy .' S of triumph pervaded the cage. The Maine boys once again quickly dressed and were out of sight within one-half hour. 13' To add insult to injury, three days later, a Black Bear basket- P ball team, was thoroughly out-hustled and out-shot by a scrappy Garnet five. Carl Rapp had his best evening of the year. To quote from a teammate, Carl, really went out in fine stylef, ,K Captain Peter Fisk, who during the previous year, had led the Bobcats at the National Small College Tourney at Spring- field, added much to the punch of this Garnet five. A xxx Yes, Bates is always the underdog. Yes, Bates does have a J habit of beating Maine. How long can this David and Goliath story continue? Somewhere behind this mountain of conjecture, 5ChUYlCf want ipeculatiqn, and ggessiivork, one thgigfiishcertainh Asljong as okur oys con inue to ust e, scrap, an g t as t ey ave in t e past, Maine will continue to be frustrated and taunted very F 9 S V XX much in the same way in the future. In the 1961 season opener. the Bobcats entertained the Tufts Jumbos at Garcelon Field. Bill Davis returned the opening kick-off to the 2-l yard line Ron Deveaux opened the scoring with a two yard plunge and ran for a two point conversion to make the score 8-0. A 22 yard pass from Dave .-Xdzigan to George Kinnaly gave Tufts a ll-ffl lead. Midway through the second period. Bill Davis scampered 16 yards to the 2 yard line to set up Paul Plan- chons 2 yard dive into paydirt. Tufts carrie right back with Ron Deveaux scoring on a 5 yard mn. 1Yith 5 seconds re- maining in the half. a 28 yard pass from Swifty Hathaway to Paul Castolene brought Bates her final score of the day. In the second half. Tufts scored three more touchdowns. including a dazzling 88 yard run by Ron Deveaux. The final score: Tufts 12 iDeveaux 28 Bates 12. At Union. the determined Bobcats battled the Dutchmen for the first 23 minutes without scoring. At this point. a Hathaway to Castolene pass brought Bates 6 points. Just before the half ended. a 20 yard pass from Syyifty to Patil Planchon raised the score to 12-0 Bates. It was not until the last 2 minutes of the game that there was further scoring. At this time. Doug Rfemery took the spotlight. Doug returned an intercepted pass to the 5 yard line and two plays later carried the ball into the end zone. With only seconds remaining. Dill of Ifnion raced 60 yards to make the final score 20-6 Bates. XYith the record standing at 1-1. Bates returned home to meet the Airbees from Quonset Naval Air Station. This game marked the maximum output by the Bates team for the '61 Hathaway. 102 5 li-can-., , A -1. - .1 ' - Y-- A pile-up on the Eeld. 4 Will it be a touchdown run? In the second period, Bill Davis scored on a 29 yard jaunt. Opening the second half, Hathaway hit Cas- tolene for a spectacular 75 yard touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Paul Planchon galloped 44 yards from scrimmage for another stirring touchdown. Late in the game, Rucci came off the bench to guide the team 40 yards and scored the final touchdown himself, as Bates walloped Quonset 40-O. A gray day it was when the Bobcats met the Worcester Polytech Engineers at Garcelon Field. Fumbles and intercep- tions proved costly for Bates as they led directly to the first two touchdowns. With the score 12-0, Dan Stockwell jour- neyed 67 yards only to have them spoiled by a clipping penalty. Ten plays later, Bates scored. A 56 yard pass play and another intercepted pass made the score 24-6. A poor kick and another interception added two more touchdowns to the Worcester total. Late in the game, a MacNevin to Castolene pass and lateral to Boone accounted for 70 yards on a touchdown to close-out an otherwise dismal day. Next, Bates traveled to Vermont to take on the Panthers of Middlebury. Halfway through the first quarter, Paul Planchon fell on a fumbled punt on the end zone to score the First touchdown. Middlebury came right back to score two touchdowns on the strong running of fullback Gordie VanNess. With the score 12-0, Bill Davis powered his way 5 yards to paydirt. At the start of the second half, Dave Holmes put Middlebury back in the lead with a 25 yard run. With the time running out a pass interference call gave Bates the ball on the three yard line. Bill Davis passed to Paul Castolene in the end zone for the tying touchdown. The extra point attempt was wide. The game ended in a 20-20 tie. At this point, the Bobcats introduced a new fonnation christened Hthe Hatchetf' On the combined efforts of Paul Planchon and Bill Davis, Bates tied the score. Dave Cloutier was trapped in the end zone for a safety and Bates led 9 to 7. Late in the second period, Swifty Hathaway tossed a perfect pass to Paul Casto- lene who raced to the Maine 1 yard line, the play covering 73 yards. Bill Davis dove into the end zone and the score was 15-7. Maine tied the score by recovering a blocked punt in the end zone. A Bates field goal attempt was short as time ran out. Bates had the distinction of being the only team to spoil Maine's otherwise perfect record. At Bowdoin, Bates lost a little of the fine edge they had the week before. Bowdoin dominated the rather bleak after- noon. Helped by fumbles, interceptions and bruising punt re- turns, Bowdoin opened up a 25-0 advantage. A Hathaway to Planchon pass gave Bates a score near the end of the half. Bowdoin's final score of the day came in the third period, on Charlie Panteleakos, fourth touchdown. Archie Lanza brought the crowd to its feet late in the game with a brilliant 70 yard gallop. The final score was 31-20 Bowdoin. A minute and a half after the opening whistle at Colby, the game was decided. A Bates offense that had two weeks pre- viously looked great, sputtered and died. Colby won over Bates 47-0, helped by bitter cold, numerous interceptions, and a great show of offensive might. The 1961 football season was typical of most Bates athletic endeavors. Bates fans had their moments to cheer and their moments to groan. Senior Eddie lVilson was outstanding. Jun- iors Paul Castolene and Red Vandersea, and Sophomore Paul Planchon were selected to the All-Maine team. Every starter was in the spotlight sometime during the season, if only fleet- ingly. This was an experienced team, flater to become riddled with injuriesl led by two fine co-captains, senior Dave Rush- forth and junior Lee Nute. The Booters opened the season with a bang, downing Nasson College 5-O. At Bowdoin it was a different story, however, with the Bobcats coming up on the short end, losing 6-1. The team bounced right back, though, pinning a 4-1 loss on Nichols. However, two quick defeats fol- lowed this victory, with both Brandeis and Colby notching I B I .' lg, -4 L U 1 ' P . C' If '. I . The next game was with Bowdoin, but this time it was a die-hard Bates team that lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 2-1. This game set the stage for the season,s final clash with the highly touted Colby Mules. This hard-fought ball game ended in a 2-2 tie, which prevented the boys from Waterville from going to the N.C.A.A. tourney. Certainly a lot of credit must be given to Mr. James Sommerville, the fellow who volunteered to coach without receiving any pay and who devoted much of his time to this team. Seniors Mike MacDonald, Dave Lougee, Nye, Carl Peterson, John Allen, and Dave Kramer were fine competitors and good soccer players, all of whom will be missed sorely next year. Special credit goes to co-captain Rushforth who was forced to play part of the season with his arm strapped to his side because of a shoulder injury. Look for an improved team next year with co-captain elect Don Mawhinney guarding the goal and this year's freshman sensation Bob Lanz booting that ball harder than ever. A victory over New Hampshire preceded Bates' only loss of the season to Northeastern. The thinclads then closed the season with 4 consecutive victories, over Boston College Q72-411, Bowdoin 177W-44MJ, M.I.T. C86-315, and Maine C67-555. The season was marked by many fine individual and team performances. The weightmen as usual found the going rough, but Carl Peterson, Jim Nye, John Curtiss, Dave Lougee, and Joe Tamburino each came through with creditable exhibitions. In the other Held events Bates usually took the lead. Freshman Tom Bowditch set a meet record with his season high 6'l1M against M.l.T., as he dominated the year in the high jump. Dave Boone and Paul Williams combined to capture the broad jump, and Freshman Bob Kramer holds promise for the future in the pole vault. Paul Williams stood out in the dashes and dropped the Cage record for the 45-yd. dash to 5.0 seconds. Larry Boston, Pete Schuyler, Jon Ford and Lou Riviezzo sparkled in the 600, while Larry Boston swept the field in the 1000. Finn Wilhelmsen easily l captured many of the 2-mile events. He lowered the Bates record to 9:53, 1 thus setting meet records. Bill Lavallee and Al Harvie burnt up the field in the hurdle events. Lavallee lowered the Cage record for the 45 lows to 5.5 seconds. This was later tied by Harvie. In the biggest meet of the year, Bates conquered the always tough Uni- versity of Maine squad C67-555. Pete Schuyler tumed in the run of the year with a 4.22.9 mile, a career record. Larry Boston turned in the second fastest 600-yd. ever run in the Cage and also won the 1000-yd. The mile relay team set a new Cage record of 3.27.6, although still short of the 3.24.5 they tumed in at the BAA. , , and John Curtiss lifts one high. 108 Coach Slovenski with his Co-captains Dave Boone and Larry Boston. .gi 1121 A fs. dvfs I ,ff Q mf., N ! ,fair J . , ff. ns 1 .S 1 mx I 1 Y M.. i M. The individual playing of Carl Rapp and Pete Fisk was dependable and at times outstanding. Occasionally help was provided by Paul Castolene, Pete Glanz. Thom Freeman, and lNIike True. Freshman Fred Stevens also sparked at times. The big win for the Bobcats was the last game of the season. This was a 69aee65 victory over the Black Bears of Blaine. The Klaine team had succeeded in beating Bates twice during the year. This win by the 'Cats made a nice ending to a rather dismal season. During' Christmas Vacation. Bates participated in the Downeast Classic and finished in seventh place. A win over traditional rival Bowdoin proved to he the out- standing event for the Bobcats. Paul Williams, then a freshman, was outstanding for the Bobcats. Besides cap- turing first in the 100-yard dash in 10.3 seconds and winning the broadjump with a leap of 21 ft. 6 in., he set a meet record of 21.9 in the 220-yard dash. Tireless Chico Parillo of North- eastern won both the mile C-11321 and the two mile. Bob Peek and Larry Boston won the 440 and 880-yard runs respectively. Defending State Champion, John Curtiss won the javelin with a 166 ft. heave. The Slovenskimen had to settle for second and third places in the other field events. In the second outing of the season. Bates easily prevailed over meet Colby and Brandeis C84-41-391. Larry Boston posted a record of 154.1 in winning the 880. Bob Peek, first in the 440, was clocked in a fast 49.6 seconds. Steve Barron tied the meet record of 11 ft. 6 in. in the pole vault. Other Bates flrsts were recorded by Dave Janke in the 220-yard low hurdles, Bill La Valle in the 120-yard low hurdles. Reid James in the two mile, John Curtiss in the hammer and jim Nye in the discus. Dave Politica of Colby set a meet record of 44 ft. 9 in. in the shot put. In the Maine State hfeet, the University of Maine captured 10 of the 15 events compiling 80 points. Maine was followed by Bates with 39, Bowdoin with 27, and Colby with 19. Meet rec- ords were set by two Maine sophomores: Baron Hicken with a 14.9 second time in the 120-yard high hurdle trials and Peter MacPhee with a 48.1 second 440 and 21.2 second 220. Hicken won the 220-yard low hurdles with Janke running second. Nason of Maine won the hammer throw with a 185 ft. 8 in. effort. The winning time in the half miles was 1153.8 run by Spencer of Maine. Kimbal's time of 4:25 was good enough to capture the mile. Dave Boone highlighted the meet with a clutch final jump that carried him 22 ft. 2ffg in. for a First place. Base- ball player, Frank Vana electrified the crowd as he ran a 10.1 second 100-yard dash that took this event. A 5 ft. 11 in. jump captured for our own Jim Hall a place in the winner's circle. Thus, as powers rise powers must fall, for Bates toppled from the ranks of Maine State Track Champions. Few noticed that the Garnet had a nucleus of sophomores and juniors. This may give a clue to the potential power of the team that will soon launch its 1962 spring track season. gullr L 3- , V - 1 . -if -' lg 'M Frank Vana wins dash for state title. , if fn Q! BA EBALL The 1961 Garnet baseball team finished the season with a 6-9 record which doesn't tell the whole story. Chick Leahey had a predominantly sophomore club that had many standout performers, Among them were Ron Taylor, who pitched, Helded, and hit his way to his second consecutive All-State selection. Howard Red Vandersea. Bill Davis, John Lawler, and Captain-elect Ed Wilson made the Garnet infield a much steadier one than it had been in the past. The pitching was handled by veteran senior Jack Bennett and sophomores Ron Taylor and Thom Freeman. David Kramer came in for relief work and ended the season with a phenomenally low earned-run average of 0.56. Thom Freeman pitched some great ball which his record does not show. He lost a few real heart-breakers. This ball club came close to materializing their season into a really good one. Four games lost by one run. It was the offensive and defensive punch lacking at strategic times that hurt them. Though the Cats will lose Captain Dick Guerney, Frank Vana, and Jim 'fSpook Sutherland, they still face a very bright future. Returning is a large nucleus from last year's team. Such retuming lettermen as Dennis Feen, Bud Spector, Lee Sweezey, Swift Hath- away, Ted Beal, and Paul Holt hope to make the 1962 season the best the Bobcats have had in a long, long time. 116 SP3 , 1 ff,'7,4 :uhh 3 'E -Q2-,give ' .I-it , Red Vandersea to take the throw from Lawler.
