Piasecki, Football Compared with the previous season. the 1960 Bates football squad showed definite im- provement as the new unbalanced line offense seemed to add to their overall punch. Sparked by a group of veterans and getting help from sophomore and freshmen, the Bobcats compiled a commendable 2-3-2 record. Bates opened the season with a 21-6 victory over Union College. Paul Planchon, '64. scored from nineteen yards on the first time he carried the ball as a collegian: a pass from quarterback Swift Hathaway, '62, was caught by end Paul Castolene, '63, for a second touch- down and fullback John Curtiss, '63, scored the final touchdown and also kicked three conversions. On the following Saturday. the Bobcats traveled to Medford. Mass., where they were beaten by Tufts. 43-l2. The brightest moment for Bates came when James Keenan. '61, took a Tufts kick and ran it back for an 80 yard touchdown gallop. - The next week was more successful as Bates -X defeated Worcester Tech 7-6 on a fourth period play that saw Castolene snare a Hathaway pass and lateral to Planchon who raced for the in touchdown. Curtiss' placement provided the margin of victory. 'S T Sporting a 2-l record, the Garnet eleven - ' 1 returned to Garcelon Field to entertain unde- feated Middlebury, Bates rolled up 432 yards in total offense, but had to settle for a l4-14 deadlock. In the opener of State Series play. Bates faced Maine at Orono. William Davis, '63, filling in at quarterback for the injured Swift Hathaway, hit Castolene with a second period touchdown toss and Curtiss' kick tied the score. A Davis pass to Dennis Tourse, '62, provided another Bates touchdown. The Bates conversion went astray to make the final score l3-l3. In Homecoming action the next Saturday. Bates was downed by Bowdoin 6-O. Through- out the afternoon Bates was plagued by fumbles and penalties which constantly stalled the attack. - The final week saw Colby triumph over the Bobcats by a 32-O score. Bowdoin. by virtue - ' of three straight victories, won the state champ- ionship. their first since l952. 'r x' iff- ., 'S- ., ,am fl 1060 SOCCER TEAM Eirst row: D. Kramer. A. Jenks, T. Smith. J. M.I.T.. and Bowdoin, and barely lost to Northeastern. The final meet of the season saw a very strong Maine team soundly beat the Bobcats. The season featured several outstanding individual performances. Record breakers were: Larry Boston in the 600 and 1000. Paul Williams and Dave Boone in the broad jump. and Barry Gilvar and Frank Vana in the dash. Lost via graduation are four seniors: Barry Ciilvar, Jim Keenan. DeXVitt Randall. and Frank Vana. Returning is a very strong nucleus of underclassmen. Standouts like Peter Schuyler. Jon Ford. Robin Schofield. and Bill LaVallee will be key men in future Bates track hopes. A very capable relay team performed Well in the Boston and New York meets. The sea- son, although not outstanding record wise. was a good one. A lack of adequate weight men and injuries did not prevent Bates from fielding a powerful running squad. The line depth in the middle distance events should bring Bates' success in the outdoor season. Excellent school support and the fine coaching of XValt Slovenski were large factors in the continued success of the Bates' track program. 1060 - 1061 BASKETBALL TEAM Left to right: R. Evans lMgr.l. Basketball A consolation trophy in the Down-East Classic and an impressive showing in the North- East Regionals of the N.C.A.A. College Division Tournament highlighted one of the most successful campaigns in recent years for the Bobcats. Captain Jim Sutherland led the varsity five to a very respectable 15 to 9 record. ln do- ing so. he broke his own rebound record and tied the individual scoring record with -12 points against U.N,H. Highlights of the season included three decisive victories over Bowdoin, two close victo- ries over Colby, including an overtime thriller which ended the regular season. and wins over U.N.H., Springfield, and Boston University. The dependable playing of starters Jim Sutherland. Scott Brown. Tom Ereeman. Peter Fisk, and Carl Rapp in addition support from Chick Harte and Mal Johnson gave the Cats a 12 and 3 record against small college competition and a post season bid to the college division regionals. There the Ciarnet, with a second half spurt. defeated Springneld 75-63. and then fell a bit short in their bid for the championship. losing to a top flight Vvfilliams team. 75-68. Although the shoes of big Jim Sutherland will be tough to ill, Coach Peck will have a strong nucleus in the three returning starters Carl Rapp. Peter Eisk, and Tom Ereeman as well as able substitute Chick Harte. Brandeis, and Colby were only trial efforts for the big clash at Orono in the traditional State Meet. The big meet wasn't decided until the final two events when the Bates team emerged as victorious State Champs. The undefeated year saw the University of Maine fall victim to Bates' power twice. Poor weather in the spring limited the team's post-season performances in the Eastern and New England meets. Rudy Smith won his Iinal race for Bates gaining the New England -140 crown. Bates will lose its track greats. Rudy Smith and John Douglas. by graduation along with Bob Erdman and Doug Morse. BasebaH The 1960 Bobcat baseball team finished the season with a 4-8 record. scoring one State Series victory over Maine by a score of 7-1. It was a building year for Coach Chick Leahey who used six freshmen and sophomores in his starting lineup. The Ciarnet was further hindered by a particularly cold spring. The inclement weather forced the cancellation of the pre-season southern trip. Having to work out in the Cage until the opening of the season. the Bobcat hitters found it difficult to match opposing pitchers when they finally got outside. Injuries also hurt. Senior Captain Bob Ciraves developed a sore pitching arm and was limited to outfield service. Sophomore John Lawler was out for most of the season as the 5 result of a collision on the basepaths. Frank -2 Vana. who was an All-State selection in 1958. , was out of action because of a leg injury sus- L tained during the Winter Track season. Cross Country Eor its third year of intercollegiate CIOSS-COUHIIY, the Bates harriers did a commendable job against some keen competition. Led by Captain DeWitt Randall, the thinclads over- powered such established cross-country schools as Tufts, W.P.l,, Brandeis, and Bowdoin. The only schools to overcome our runners were such formidable powers as the University of Maine, Boston College, and lVl.I.T. Intramurals The object of the intramural program is to provide competitive activity in a friendly atmosphere for those students who are not participating in varsity athletics. The program offers extra physical activity for the Bates men besides the regular physical education program. Some maintain intramurals have a very strong mspiritual effect on its participants. especially the freshmen. This Mspiritual effect is better known as 'Adorm spirit . whereby teamwork provides an opportunity for diametrically opposed personalitiesesuch as roommates-to act as a unit and become closer friends. This year the program has been the finest we have seen in four years. The football season saw seniors Dick Paveglio and J. Curry lead an aerial-minded Smith South Team to an A League crown and an overall title by downing the B League champs of XVest Parker. The basketball season provided excitement beyond any expectations. Smith South led by J. Curry and Red Yandersea again received the League Championship and overall honors. The Smith Club was almost upset by YVeb I-Iarrisons Smith Xliddle 'ABM League champs in a tight playoff game. The C-l League was won by Smith South led by senior Brad Garcelon and Dick Yogi Yerg. The Call honors were taken by YN'est Parker. Lacrosse A new sport reared its head on the Bates College campus this vear. The l0bl Lacrosse team. which will operate in much the same capacity as the Soccer team. hopes to play an am- bitious schedule with teams from surrounding colleges. The squad. as YCI without a faculty coach, plans to make this year a building year. It is hoped that a strong nucleus can be built so that the Lacrosse team will have a victorious season in the very near future. A call for cane didates for the team was answered bv almost two dozen interested men. It is the hope of the team that their spirit and increased skill will compensate for the predicted season record. Eventually. it is hoped that the Lacrosse squad will be deserving of varsity status. SENIDR INFORMALS 1 Q un, I P ' I n ga 4 Q I es 1-v Q., v . I au. if I-1' A jf Our Men ?
