I N I A I COVER BY ROBERT Sf irror n ppreciolion A mirror clearly reflects any subject directly before it. but how much of the background is vividly pictured? For a more inclusive View of the surrounding area. a looking-glass must be focused in different directions. This l959 issue of the MIRROR, likewise, shifts its focus to provide a fuller reflection of the people and the way of life, the seniors, the teams and clubs, the spirit, the smiles and vic- tories included within its covers. To picture Bates as vibrantly alive, to reflect the changes from Speech lll to Cultch 402, to delve be- neath the outer surface of formality to catch a deeper meaning and significance in these four years of college life, becomes the main intent of the book. Just as the ivy branch grows longer and fuller each year, so does our reaction toward and our appre- ciation of Bates develop a larger sig- nificance. It is fairly impossible to be part of this college community and remain untouched by it. In our day-to-day living at Bates, nugget. cram, trend. or goose arouse meaningful images. Pit, puddle, Smurd, thesis, or beat spill out in conversation. We value these facets of Bates, yet how much more do We appreciate our asso- ciation with people who have gone on to greater fields of endeavor, the pleasant changes in the dining rooms, a symphony orchestra. a Winning track team, or an international debate. t. . ' In a larger sense. more than these single events of today, will we appreciate the impressions and enduring ideals Bates offers us. From the campus we gain a sense of stability and assurance. We look to the faculty for scholarship and guidance, to the seniors for leadership. By Working to- gether in various organizations, we learn the meaning of co-operation. We cast our vote of confidence by supporting college activities. Active and passive participation in athletic con- tests yields sportsmanship. Out of communal living grow deep and lasting friendships. Herein lies the real Bates. Horsman lphysicianl. Football Plagued by injuries that hampered several key men throughout the season, the Garnet eleven felt the consequences of a serious lack of depth. They repeatedly suffered 'Asecond-ha1f- itis , which found their more formidable opponents wearing them down during the final two periods of play. Thus they managed to compile but a 2-4-l record on the season. Most graphic of these experiences was the tilt at Orono. where the giant University of Maine squad took prideful revenge for two suc cessive beatings by the Bobcats and expanded a slim 8-O halftime lead into a 40-O rout. The Bowdoin Polar Bears were their win- less but troublesome selves as they again played their best football against the Garnet. holding the hosts to a l4-l4 tie and dampening Home- coming festivities. Against the eventual champion Colby Mules. the Bates eleven staged a rare second half come- back. However. the damage had already been done earlier and they bowed grudgingly. 25-18. Garcelon Field was the scene of an opening day victory as the Garnet rolled to an impres- sive 27-6 win over Union. and the following week's 24-14 loss at Tufts was no humiliation for the Jumbos were one of the East's top small college elevens. Against the Worcester Tech Engineers the Garnet offense, with two backfield aces still hobbling from Jumbo injuries and another key back sidelined. lacked the all-important punch which resulted in an 18-6 victory for W.P.I. Back on the Garcelon rectangle the Bobcats managed to pull themselves together with enough tape and liniment to thwart Middle- bury. 2O-0, thus lifting local spirits to high hopes entering the perennial State Series round. on.- 29-an ' .nq , ' -ny , . ,--. Basketball The Bobcat varsity basketball team captained by senior guard, Jack O'Grady, finished the season with one of their best records in recent years. The 1958-59 campaign ended with a record of 12 wins and 8 losses. The season opened with State Series play, finding Bates losing to Colby and Maine. In the Colby contest Bates' big center, Jim Sutherland picked off 22 rebounds in a closely con- tested game. The following week found the Bobcats on the rebound with a win over Bow- doin. At the Christmas break Bates held a 2-3 record. A big highlight of the season found Bates participating in the first Down East Classic, Dec. 31 - Jan. 3 with Maine, Colby. Bowdoin. Rutgers, Wesleyan, St. Michaels, and Tufts. The improving Bobcats finished third behind St. Michaels and Colby by beating Wesleyan 69-63. Bowdoin 71-54 and losing to St. Michaels 68-44. Jerry Feld was big man in the Wes- leyan tilt with 24 points, while Joe Murphy led the Bobcats in the Bowdoin game with 25. Following the Classic, Bates lost to hot-handed Colby again but rebounded with eight wins in the next nine starts. This streak was highlighted by Jim Sutherland's 29 points against Bowdoin, the hustling play of Dave Smith, Jerry Feld's 13 for 13 from the foul line against Tufts, Jack O'C1rady's 8 assists against Bowdoin, and the scintillating, all around play of Joe Murphy. 5-2 ATE BATES BATES B245 22 H2165 IU E: 1958-1959 BASKETBALL TEAM First row: G. Pfeiffer, R. Castelpoggi, lMgr.l. With two games remaining Bates still had a chance for the Series title but was defeated by Maine's hustling fast break and Colby's sharp shooting. This put Bates third in Series play with Maine and Colby battling for first. Sz Winter Track The 1958-1959 winter track season, although very successful, witnessed the inevitable when the Black Bears from Maine defeated the Bobcat thinclads to halt their win streak at twenty-one consecutive victories over a total of thirty-one opponents. While the loss to Maine ruined the chances for another perfect slate. the Slovenskimen ended the season with a fine 4-l record compiling wins over MIT, UNH, Northeastern and Bowdoin. For the third consecutive season Juniors Rudy Smith and John Douglas were the out- standing performers, but they received strong support from Pete Gartner, Dave Erdman. Pete Schuyler and a host of others. High points of the season were the races in which Rudy was twice nicked at the tape in the 600 yard run by Ed Collymore of Villanova, and the tre- mendous performance of Douglas when he broad-jumped 25' -Vi at Madison Square Garden. Also deserving of mention is the mile relay team composed of Larry Boston, Lou Riviezzo. Pete Schuyler, and Smith which ran the fastest relay ever recorded by a Maine college aggre- gation with the time of 3:25.6. Although Coach Walt Slovenski will lose through graduation co-captains Gartner and Erdman. Larry Hubbard. Fletcher Adams, and Ralph Posner. he still will have a powerful nucleus on which to build another winning team in the coming year. Strength in the weight events, along with the efforts of Rudy Smith in the middle dis- tances. provided the Garnet with enough push to edge the University boys, 65 2,fl0 to 62 2 10. This climaxed the Bobcats' fourth straight undefeated season. indoor and out, in the past two years. For the Hrst time in many years, Coach Walt Slovenski's boys were represented in many of the major meets in the East. The recording-breaking twins. Smith and John Douglas be- came the best traveled members of the squad, competing in such meets as the K. of C. games in both Boston Garden and Madison Square Ciarden, as well as the B. A. A. contests in Boston. Smith. competing in the 440. usually found himself tied up in a personal duel with Olympic Champion Charlie Jenkins. Rudy beating him on one occasion and placing close second in the other contests. Douglas, a consistent 24-foot broad jumper. fared well in his trips, and although he did not manage an out-and-out victory. he garnered respectable places in the competition. 11' .JH we oo :E 19 5 8 BASEBALL TEAM First row: J. Bernholdt CMgr.5 Baseball The final mark of seven wins and ten losses registered by the 1958 Bates pastimers does not picture the true caliber of the team, which was involved in no less than nine games decided by score differences of two runs or less. Consequently, fans were treated to some fine baseball, and with an occasional break at the needed moment the Bobcats' record would have been much better. Opening the closest-matched State Series in history, the Garnet scored one run in the last of the ninth, to back the great effort of Jon Whitten and reap a 2-l victory over the Polar Bears of Bowdoin. The next week it was Whitten again who held the rampaging Colby Mules in check while his mates squeezed out another 2-1 win, mark- ing Colby's first defeat in ten games. In out-of-state competition, the pastimers showed well, with wins over Upsala College and Pace College on the annual March trip to the New York area. During this same series, losses were dropped to Adelphi and Long Island University, both by the one-run margin. Against Massachusetts foes, the charges of Coach Chick Leahey topped Suffolk University, Brandeis, and Northeastern. Again close tilts were dropped to both Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Clark University. Golf The Bates golf team managed to snap a losing streak during last spring's schedule to post a 1-7 record. Coached by Bob Hatch and skippered by Pete Jodaitis, the linkmen also tied Bowdoin for second place in the Maine State Tournament. With a total of seven returning veterans, including standouts captain-elect Ross Deacon. Led by Captain Pete Meilen and veteran standout Phil Feinsot, the netmen established team, as well as personal records. The season's highlight came when cap- tain Meilen and Eeinsot won the Maine State doubles championship. With the return of Dr. Robert Peck, the 1956 tennis mentor, and a nucleus of the 1958 squad. the prospects for a successful season this year appear good. Soccer The soccer 'Aclub completed its third uncoached year against Maine Colleges with a four and four record. Captain Bob Chip Leonard will be missed next year as well as other senior members, Clark Welton and Erich Walka. A strong core still remains in the presence of next year's co-captains, Dick Yerg and Fred Turner, and returning veterans George Deuillet, Dave Rush- forth, John Adams, and goalie Art Agnos. A future goal the club has in mind is to follow the Colby and Bowdoin teams by being recognized as a varsity sport. Cross Countr This fall the cross-country team was initiated as a new varsity sport at Bates. The team did a creditable job for itself ending the season with a one and one record in dual meet com- petition and taking second place in both of their triangular meets. Next year will see a stronger team. since none of the endurance men are graduating.
