Bold leaves of ivy, resurrected. Spitting rain like a whip-lash, mauls It is right that old life new life bringsg And strikes the ancient niches where the ivy grows, From old foundations are better houses built. Sweeps the gnarled vine till a seared leaf falls. To rock and not to sand the fortress clings. But seasoned wood of ivy only grows So new leaves from old vines grow and quilt More iron-hard and thick skin blanketed The Walls in symbols of beginning, ready When torrent lashed like tree-top stranded crows. To take the place of those that die and wilt. This is the Vine of Life, for us to see How all things going forward must look behind For bedrock on which to build futurity. FORT P. MANNO
