Directing the placement office as well as teaching classes in economics, Professor Bartlett efficiently held what was really a two-man job. His loyalty to the college transcended the mere outline of his duties, and his interest in its students was not concluded by their graduation. His home was not only a dwelling place for several students during their attendance at Bates, but also was always congenially open to those who sought his counsel. Rarely outspoken, his judgment was respected by both his colleagues and the thousands of Bates students and alumni in whom he was personally interested. His personable smile will remain in the hearts of all who knew him. ,,aui9 I if ,Q .', , . K , 4 , ' 5? . .4 I iff., t 053: sf ROBERT A. ADDISON, A. B. Bold leaves of ivy, resurrected. Spitting rain like a whip-lash, mauls It is right that old life new life bringsg And strikes the ancient niches where the ivy grows, From old foundations are better houses built. Sweeps the gnarled vine till a seared leaf falls. To rock and not to sand the fortress clings. But seasoned wood of ivy only grows So new leaves from old vines grow and quilt More iron-hard and thick skin blanketed The Walls in symbols of beginning, ready When torrent lashed like tree-top stranded crows. To take the place of those that die and wilt. This is the Vine of Life, for us to see How all things going forward must look behind For bedrock on which to build futurity. FORT P. The Bobcats finished the eight-game schedule with a 2-5-1 slate. In the first game at Tufts Oval in Medford, the jumbos had taken a six-point lead in the first period, Herb Morton tied the score for the Garnet with three bull-like bashes starting from the 13. Trailing 6-13 in the final quarter, Richie Raia made a spec- tacular catch of a Dave Harkins pass to place the ball deep in Tufts territory and moments later Richie went over from the two. Morton's buck through center gave Bates its tying point and that was the way it ended, a 13-13 deadlock. At Amherst the following week, the Bobcats were no match for a strong Massachusetts 22 and were soundly beaten, 39-6. All feelings of moroseness had completely dis- appeared after the thrilling Garcelon inaugural against Middlebury. Behind 12-14, in the final min- ute of play, Don Barrios caught a Harkins heave on the three and powered his way across the goal line to give the Cats a 19-14 victory. Prior to Don's dash, the Garnet had blown the 12-0 lead they had gained in most impressive fashion in the first half and appeared headed for another setback. It was a finish long to be remembered. Down at Hempstead, N. Y., the Cats found Hofstra too stubborn and went down to a 26-7 defeat. It was 7-13 late in the fourth quarter when two desperation Bates passes were intercepted and converted into touchdowns by the Dutchmen to make the final margin inappropriately decisive. The Bobcats were hopelessly impotent and the 20-7 score by which they lost might have been a lot worse. The only flash of Garnet success came in the final period when Barrios scored the lone Bates touchdown on a forward pass-lateral play. A second score missed fire when Bob Reny, downfield on a sleeper play, was overshot in the clear. Saturday, October 25, 1952, a day that will live in infamy, the Bates College football team was sud- denly and deliberately shellacked by the air and ground forces of the University of Maine. This slightly revised quotation of FDR's war message to Congress is perhaps the best way of describing the 62-6 defeat suffered at Orono the following week. Suffice it to say Bates was simply outclassed. 1' V I 4 1,25 1 76 f ' A 70:84 40 72141 42 18171797181 37 Uaraifg In the Back-to-Bates game with the Bowdoin Polar Bears, the Cats were doomed to disappoint- ment as they acquiesced humbly, 28-6. There was very little enthusiasm on campus for the season's finale with Colby on Garcelon Field. The Mules were conquerors of Maine by six points and loomed up-according to comparative scores- as 55-point favorites! After two minutes had elapsed, a bad fourth-down centering pass by Colby gave Bates the ball on the enemy 17. Chumbook then carried to the seven and Higgins bucked over to put the Cats ahead, 7-0. Minutes later Chumbook quick-kicked to the Mule one-foot line. A poor return punt put Bates in possession on the 15 and five plays later Higgins again went over to make it 14-0. Bob Bean booted a field goal in the second quarter and that was all the scoring for the day. The Bobcats hung on the rest of the way, holding Colby five times inside the Garnet 20, and left the field with a 17-0 tri- umph. It was as gratifying and baffling an upset ' 6 A- fl . Also playing prominent roles in the Bobcat grid picture were halfbacks Bob Chumbook and Herb Morton. Chumbook's booming punts and graceful end runs warmed the cockle of many a Bates heart and Herb's pile-driving sorties up the middle were awesome to behold. Captain-elect Don Hamilton was a very effective 60-minute end, while Dave Higgins and Bob Reny showed promise as replace- ments for the departing senior backs. Ralph Vena, Moose Dimaria, Ralph Froio, Art Paton, Paul Barbera, Bob Simons, and Gary Burke also saw considerable action for the Garnet. With the abolition of the two platoon system, it is hoped better times are ahead for Bob's Cats. Better times must be ahead for Bates freshmai- football, the Kittens were not overly successful in their five-game schedule, losing all five and in the process failing to score a single touchdown. These disheartening disclosures can be partially attributed to the fact that a few of the best prospects were injured in pre-season drills and that several of the boys were out for football for the first time. Co- Captains Leo Mackey and John Davis, Chuck Cloutier and jim Vaughn did succeed, however, in showing some potential for the future. Off to a fast start, then slowed by a mid-season slump, the Bobcats closed fast to finish the season with 13 wins in the 23-game schedule. Included in this total was a 5 and 4 record Speed-through the air. Z?a4Aef6af in state series play, good enough to give the Garnet undisputed possession of second place in the state championship race. Bates' hopes soared high in the early part of the season as the fighting quintet captured five of its first eight games. The outstanding victory of this group which included triumphs over Gorham State, Bowdoin, Clark, and Farmington State, was a thrill- ing 67 to 66 win over the University of Maine. Reserve forward Bob Bean's hook shot in the last five seconds decided the contest. Then came a rather disastrous three-game south- ern trip which saw Bates drop contests to Brandeis, Providence and Amherst on successive nights. Still unable to hit their stride, the Bobcats were able to salvage only one victory in the four games which Up and in. remained before the mid-term exam period. For- tunately, this win was an 89 to 72 shellacking of Bowdoin to keep the Garnet in the thick of state series competition. This slump dropped the Bates record to a season's low of 6 and 9 and even though all the remaining games were scheduled for Alumni Gym, the outlook appeared fat from rosy. What A jump and itis in. happened during this two-week lay-off no one knows, but the fact remains that there was little resemblance between the Bates team of the first fifteen games and the quintet which finished the schedule. During the week of February 8, the Bobcats played four games and won them all. New Hamp- Schroder gets one from underneath. Kraut Cousins shire was toppled 91-79 to avenge an early season defeat at the hands of the Wildcats. Captain Charlie Bucknam led the way with 29 points, followed by Don Smiths 22. Highly rated St. Anselm's was surprised 65 to 60 as Bucknam threw in 31 points. The Engineers from M. I. T. likewise proved no match for the Garnet and were turned back 68-62. Smith and Bucknam once again led the Bates scor- ing parade with 17 and 16 points, respectively. With Bucknam rallying 32 markers and Ken Weiler 20, a powerful Trinity Hilltoppers five was edged 88-82 to close our the busy week. An exciting 77-68 victory over Maine was fifth on the list of successive Garnet wins as Bucknarn's 25 points once again topped the scoring. Next came the year's high point of thrills when the Bobcats battled from way back to gain an 85-84 victory over Northeastern. Held to 1-4 points during the first three periods, Bucknam broke loose with an amazing variety of jump, hook, and push shots to score 23 additional points in the fourth quarter and the five-minute overtime session. In the sea- son's final week of play, Bates once again toppled Bowdoin, this time 80-74, to insure its second place position in state series competition. Finally coming into his own, Weiler topped the Bobcat scorers with 25 markers followed by Bucknarrfs 22. The seven-game winning streak ended in the season's finale as the Colby Mules stopped the Garnet 78-70 before the largest home crowd in several years. Captain Bucknam was an outstanding figure for the Garnet throughout the entire season, breaking virtually every school scoring record while rallying 509 points during the 23-game schedule. The Kraut Cousins, Ken Weiler and George Schroder, like- wise turned in many fine performances for the Bob- cats. Weiler led the club in percentage of shots made, finished second to Schroder in grabbing re- bounds, and also found time to contribute 305 points for the season to trail only Bucknam in this department. Schroder was next in line as he dropped in 287 points to go along with his excellent re- bounding and defensive work. Other important factors in Bates' success were the steady floor play of senior jim Moody, the rebounding and scoring of Don Smith, and the clutch play of Ed McKinnon. After losing only one of the first eleven contests, the freshman court squad fell upon evil days and dropped five consecutive games to finish the season with a 10 and 6 record. Six-foot, three-inch center Dick jenkins, Dave Rushefsky, and transfer Bob Dunn were the outstanding members of the team and should be of great value to the varsity next year. 306' Under the tutelage of new head coach Walt Slovenski, the varsity track team ended its season on a happy note by winning 10 of 13 events to trample Colby 83-34. Previous to the Colby meet, the Bobcats had gone down to defeat at the hands of Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern, Bowdoin, and Tufts. Although unable to defeat any of these powerhouses, the Garnet gave a good accounting of itself on every occasion, only to be deprived of a victory because of a few fatal weak spots and a general lack of depth. Second-year man Ed Holmes was the outstanding performer on the sophomore dominated squad. He was topped only once during the year in either the discus or the hammer, while setting three meet records in the former event. Other high-scoring sophomores included Doug Fay in the -40-yard dash and the 300- and 600-yard runs, Buzz Bird in the two-mile, Phil Cowan and Don Howell in the shot, and Stan Barwise in the high jump. john Dalco in the dash, hurdles, and the broad jump, Clyde Eastman in the mile and l,000, john Boston Relay Team. Lind in the pole vault and high jump, and Roger Schmutz in the 300 and 600, were the juniors con- sistently adding to the Bates scoring total. After a slow start, star middle-distance man Bob Goldsmith regained his form of former years and scored frequent firsts in the 1,000 and 600, while also picking up points in the mile and 300. Pole vaulter Curt Osborne and middle distance man Bob Abbott also finished their last year of competition in fine style, while rallying consistently in their specialties. The Freshman squad turned in some good per- formances to complete their longest and toughest schedule in many years, with four wins against three losses. After dropping meets to the Maine and New Hampshire frosh, the Bobkittens turned in four consecutive wins over M. C. I., Wells, Deer- ing, and the Bowdoin '56ers before losing a one- point heartbreaker to the Tufts freshmen. Out- standing members of the squad included Dan Bar- rows, Greg Clarke, Dick Hooper, Larry Hubbard, and Sherwood Parkhurst. A Barrows Broadjump. Z-ZLJQALIZ A stiff nineteen-game schedule faces the sopho- more-dominated varsity baseball team this spring. With the graduation or withdrawal from school of last year's complete pitching staff, Coach Bob Hatch must rebuild his mound corps around four new- comers playing their first year of college ball. In- cluded in this group are right-handers Dave Hig- gins, Herb Morton, and George Schroder, and southpaw Bob Bean. Behind the plate, senior Dave Harkins will probably get the nod over sophomore Bob Reny. When he is not pitching, Morton will more than likely hold down the first base job with Schroder taking over when the redhead is busy with his mound duties. Bob Atwater appears set to handle most of the chores around second base while third seems to be a toss-up between veteran Jim Moody and sophomore Gary Burke. The same uncertain air surrounds the shortstop slot, where a battle looms between Stan Ladd and Spence Hall. In the outfield. fleet Dave Purdy and Richie Raia are the only returning veterans. Sophomores Paul Barbera, lack Cannon. and Gene Soto are the most promis- ing candidates for the one remaining outer garden slot. Bates opens its busy diamond schedule against a You're out, but . . l 'vi ll.,- visiting Gorham State nine on April 14. The Bob- cats then begin their three-game state series sets by tangling with Colby and Bowdoin before embark- ing on the annual southern,' jaunt. On this trip, the Garnet will face New Hampshire, Trinity, Northeastern, and Quonset Naval Air Station on successive days, starting with Wednesday, April 23. As usual, the focal point of interest will be the nine-game round robin involving Bates and the three other state series schools. The five remaining contests on the schedule are all at home and are all against out-of-state nines. Included in this latter group are Providence, Clark, Northeastern, Upsala, and M. I. T. Although the club is of an unknown quantity to say the least, there is every possibility that it will continue the year's trend toward better days. The nucleus of this season's varsity nine is formed by members of last year's freshman club which dropped but one contest. Much depends upon the manner in which the rookie pitchers deliver. If they develop as Coach Hatch hopes they will, there is a good chance that the Bobcats will be able to do even better than their second place standing of football and basketball. He's safe. 1 V, W, . fs .Q -.--H ,-. - it 2 .9I'lfl 6tI'l'llfll Cl ri The intramural segment of the Bates athletic program once again had a busy year. Under the leadership of the intramural board, composed of Bill Boyer, Gordon I-Iall, and Coach C. Ray Thomp- son, the season got under way early last fall with two four-team touch-football leagues representing off-campus and the seven men's dorms. After nearly two months of play, Smith Middle and Bardwell emerged as champions of their respective leagues and then won their way into the final round of post-season playoffs. However, because of wet grounds and generally inclement weather, the championship game was never played and conse- quently the board designated both clubs as co- champions. Following a brief period of inactivity, the hotly contested basketball league got under way in early December, with two eight-team leagues being neces- sary to handle the great interest. In the American League, the end of the regular season found a two- way tie for first place honors between Andersonis Roger Bill quintet and Pappas' Bardwell five, both Gordon and Bill make season plans. ..... ff clubs having registered eight wins against two losses. National League action saw Rose's Smith South combine go through the season undefeated and Nast's Bardwell club drop only one contest to capture the runner-up spot. In the ensuing playoffs involving the two top teams in each league, the American Leagues Bard- well entry edged Nast's Bardwell five 5l-503 and Roger Bill romped over South 73-40. The bitterly waged finals witnessed Roger Bill jump off quickly, build up a 25-20 half-time lead, and then win going away, 56-44. Walt Koball and Sam Kozak led the winners' well-balanced attack, while john Moore's 18 points was tops for Bardwell, Nast's Bardwell combine topped South, 62-53 in the con- solation round game for third place. Other intramural activities during the year in- cluded a volleyball league after the completion of basketball and a softball league in the spring. Both competitions produced the usual great interest and featured many closely contested battles while pro- viding a great deal of enjoyment for all involved. PREXY NAN Lown From September to june, the WAA sport sea- sons tumble over each other as the spotlight focuses on field hockey, badminton, basketball, volleyball, tennis, and golf, each in turn. Fall finds hiking and biking in full swing, winter makes skiing and skating the order of the day. Similar sports are sponsored in physical educa- tion classes, balanced by the testing and guidance Candidates for Betty Bates. program--including the old motorability and the new lung capacity tests. Interdorm basketball brought the most spirited competition of the year as each dorm tried for the basketball plaque, this year captured by undefeated East Parker. The newest addition to WAA activi- ties was the organization of synchronized swim- ming, culminating in a production in March called Tempos. Highlights of the year are reflected in thoughts of the hilarious Halloween Party, a sedate after- noon at the Back-to-Bates Tea, Winter Play Day at Colby, spring fashions at the annual choosing of Betty Bates, and Awards Night-the climax of the year's achievements. 3 5 .
