Yet we should have been warned by that first issue of the Student, Faculty Votes Special Exams for Drafted Menf, Freshman week plunged us into Bates traditions and respon- sibilitiesAthe CA Tent, meetings. receptions, and more meetings, tour of the libe. IMUR. ice cream at a meeting for WA,-X, and then Stanton Ride. Hot-dogs toasted over a fire. then our picture lwlllll happened to Connie's shoe?i. and then a walk through the woods in the steps of Uncle Johnny, topped off by cider and doughnuts. December 7. and next day the broadcast of dec- laration of war in Fiske. As Ralph Tuller wrote, Chapel programs, and football games, and college spirit. and Bowdoin polar bears all seem suddenly to have lost the importance we gave them a few days ago. All at once we realize how essentially insignificant our own little problems and our own little lives really are. Traft, Barb Littlefield, Romeo, and Kay Reilly were elected class officers. California took his place on Stu-C. Exams and our first carnival with Marty Blais- dell as Queen. Measles -sleigh rides-cabin par- tiesfappendectomies. 27 of us made Dean's List that first semester, believe it or not. Barb Cox earned 4 point. Johnny Marsh as Abe. At spring elections Traft and Barb were reelected and Chris Stillman and Bob Corish filled in as secretary and treasurer respectively. Barb was also named sophomore representative for Stu-C, as was Stonie. Johnny Morrison and Ken Drummond made Stu-C. Benny placed third in the oratorieal contest. Traft and Jaye soloed at the spring con- cert. Four of us made the Betty Bates Parade. Remember Ray Cool on campus for Ivy with Von- nie Chase? Don and Hal Marr-mayors. We left Bates that first year in the middle of May. November saw only 150 of us returning to Bates for our sophomore year. 17 fellows immediately enlisted in the Reserves in hopes that it would keep them in college a while longer. Blackouts- air raidsfRed Cross courses. Chris Stillman, Bea Benson, Thelma Rainville. Bob Vernon, Benny, Gene Woodcock, Ervin Perkins, Dave Kendall, and others were already second semester sophomores
