Opportunities for developing truly democratic citizens can be realized! Bates women feel that with our Honor System we have been able to keep campus morale on a high standardfa record to be proud of. Any other system would only be regression. This year a more progressive spirit has pervaded the Board and conse- quently many suggestions pertaining to the needs and problems of the student body have been carried out. The Board has obtained extended entertaining privileges in order to make more use of the reception rooms and the Wlomenis Union-including later Saturday evening and weeknight permissions, Sunday morning entertaining and co-ed Sunday afternoons in the Wlomenis Union. The system of a secret committee for nominations was abolished in order to instill a truly democratic spirit. As of this year new members sign the constitution later in their first semester in order that they may have an opportunity to live by the Honor System and to gain a full meaning of its significance. The threefold purpose of our organization-to offer each girl the greatest possibilities of college life, to develop a sense of individual responsibility through the Honor System. and to promote cooperation and harmony between students and faculty-can be achieved only to the extent that each girl partici- pates in the program and enters into the spirit of the Student Government. C.. is a newly organized committee composed of members of the faculty and the student body. The students are represented by the President of Student Government and two members ofthe Student Government Board. the Pres- ident of Student Council and one civilian fellow. and two members of the Navy Y-12 Unit appointed by Lt. Cass. The purpose of the B. C. C. is to promote more college inter-action between faculty and students and to study campus problems and college issues. The appointment of the Chase Hall Committees in charge of open- houses and Saturday night dances. the opening of the Navy smokers to co-eds and the Sunday night inter-denominational fellowship meetings are but a few of the accomplishments of the B. C. C. since its beginning in November 1944. It is to this committee that we shall look for encouragement and guid- ance in future campus problems and activities. Bates Confere ee Committee The varied program of the Christian Association has given the Bates campus community an interesting year. The freshmen were met by the Freshman Commission directed by Muriel lvlrich: Freshman Week followed with Stanton Ride in the Gym. and all kinds of meetings to keep our new students busy, The Religion Commission has been particularly active in obtaining monthly vesper speak- ers. and in helping the Lewiston-Auburn fniversity of Life programs. Betty Haslam and ,lane Blossom have headed this group. The Deputations Commission, who chairman is Walter Beaupre. has selll out groups of students to rural churches. Snow-shoveling. the second-hand hook store. magazines for the infirmaries. and sending postcards for the FEPC-if these have been the duties of Nan Lord and the Campus Service Com- mission. Community Service has done something new this year: ,lane Webber has directed regularly a Sunday School at Danville Junction in addition to the entertainment at the Old Ladies' Home. the Orphanage. and the hospital. The Social Commission under Shirley Ray- mond is now planning ths- annual banquet: throughout the year they have provided music for the dining hall. and cocoas at exam time. The ,lune day breakfast is yet to come. The Reconstruction Commissions discussion group series on post-war problems. their WSSF drive. their old clothing collection and their contacting Bates men in the Service have all made war service and reconstruction an actuality under Chairmen Alden Sears and Muriel Henry. Public affairs. dealing with current events and at present interested in dorm discus- sions on Dumbarton Oaks. and in a news bulletin board for Chase Hall. has been led by Shirley Stone and Electra Zazopolus. The over-all job of the Conference anl Publicity Commission has been well managed by dorm representatives w ho have handled the Yesper Service blotters. the CA News Letter. and the announcement of CA activities. Tom Hardy, V-l2. and ,lean Phelps have ably directed this work. Eleanor Frost has been our Student Volunteer representative: she has helped bring to the campus men from the missionary field. The function of coordinating the many activities of the Christian Association has been the duty of the Executive Committee. composed of Jean MacKinnon, president: J. They have also directed the work of the Freshman Cabinet which is planning to build an out- door chapel at Thorncrag. This year we've been through a transition period. We've amended our constitution almost beyond recognition and now our two boards stand united. Our central core of ten members is still maintained, but at the begin- ning of each school year our Board will be supplemented by members elected from houses not already represented on the Board. It may sound complicated, but together we've devised a system that should work. Our goal is still the same. however. because we find it hard to improve. The W. A. A. Board wants to offer an opportunity to each co-ed to meet and play with her classmates through the medium of sports. Some of the most admirable characteristics a girl possesses are developed in fair play on the athletic field. We donit expect our members to be athletic wizards. we don't even ask that they be skilled amateurs-four only requirement is that they be good sports. Basketball made a big come-back on our sports schedule this year. Class teams were formed and Rand Gym became the scene of many a feminine fray. The seniors came out on top with the freshmen running a close second. Our dance club put on its own Dance Recital. It was open to the public and was much enjoyed by all. ln our pingpong tournament the stu- dent winner was victorious over the Faculty winner. Then of course we had hiking, biking. archery, skiing. skating. bowling. swimming. volleyball, tennis, hockey. and camp craft in due season. Our Special projects included the Freshman Frolic Mid-Year Cocoas. Betty Bates Day, our Union Party, The Banquet, and a June Day Breakfast on the top of Mt. David. YES we-'ve had a busy year-and it's been fun, hasn't it? . A. A. Boa rd s.,f 1 C l Crit ry. Xl llruh, l' llcan, X. Ru The Outing Club, the largest organization of campus, is this year celebrating its twenty- fifth anniversary. During this time it has endeavored to bring to its members, the whole student body. facilities and enthusiasms for out-of-door activities. In 1920 Evan Woodward. an English professor. and three men students, initiated the idea of an outing club. Professor W7oodward, a graduate of Dartmouth, did much to promote the idea, and the club now holds the distinction of being. in age. second only to Dartmouth. Pro- fessor Crose. and Professor McDonald were both faculty advisers, Dr. Sawyer, the present adviser. taking office in 1923. The club is now in possession of two cabins-Sabattus, about eight miles from campusg and Thorncrag. only a half-hour walk away. The Outing Club also has charge of about forty miles of the Appalachian Trail, which extends for a distance of 2.250 miles from Maine to Georgia. It is in possession of a variety of equipment. including six Old Town canoes. skis. toboggans, snowshoes and ski scooters. Winter activities include care of the skating rink. over-night trips to Sabattus, and the three-day Winter Carnival. In the spring the club sponsors mountain climbs, hikes, canoe trips. and open houses at the two cabins. Although every student is a member. the organization of the club is carried on by a Council and a Board of Directors, chosen from the student body, and headed by a President. Through these bodies, activities are organized in which all students may participate. Outing Club has added much to the recreation of an enjoyable college life, through the enthusiastic endeavors of each member. ulin lub P. Wakeman, D, Brigham ffl R :fy lr!! In right: l' lViIson. gl. Yvhitbeck The first recorded meeting of the Board of Directors of the Bates Publishing Association was held in March, 1925, just about twenty years ago. P. A. at that time was responsible only for the staff, policies, and financial solvency of The Student and of The Bobcat, a humor magazine. As The Garnet grew from a step-child of The Student and the Spofford Club into a full-Hedged publication, P. A. assumed its supervision as well. Not until 1932 did the Board of Directors take over THE MIRROR, and it was P. A. who watched the life and death of The Bujfoon. In 1940 revision of the constitution made P. A. more effective by clearly designating its powers. P. A., too, acts as go-between in administrative-student publication difficulties. All student subscribers to The Student are members of the P. A. and at spring elections they choose the President, Vice-President, and Secretary of the Board from the incoming senior class and a menis and a women's representative from the incoming junior class. Three faculty members are appointed to the Board by the president. One of them. at the present time, Professor P. D. Williams, is treasurer of the Association.
