The many and rapid changes that have taken place at Bates during the last year have made the student body realize more than ever the value of a democratic institution. With the knowledge that the future of our American democracy depends upon the will- ingness of its citizens to cooperate and the ability to govern themselves, the Womens Student Government has emphasized the development of this responsibility in each of the women students. The Honor System, always an integral part of our student govern- ment and something of which we are very proud. has meant more to us this year. Its aims are to make group living a more satisfying experience, and to place the importance of obeying rules upon the individual girl. This year under the new conditions the board has been active in making and carry- ing out suggestions pertaining to the present needs and problems of the student body. During the year the board obtained smoking privileges for the Open Houses held in the YVomen's Union, voted to include one of the Union proctors as a member of the board, and to retain the president of Rand on the new board which takes ofhce in the Spring. In the past, Rand Hall has not had a representative after the retirement of the old board. A different plan for installing the new board was used this year and proved to be very effective. The installation ceremony was held by candle-light in the chapel. The threefold purpose of our organization, to offer each girl the greatest possibilities of college life, to develop a sense of individual responsibility through the Honor System, and to promote cooperation and harmony between students and faculty can be achieved only to the extent that each girl participates in its program and enters into the spirit of the association. xS?lfLU!8lfLf 0l!8lf'lfLlflfL8IfLf WMA EW Wfere in an athletic whirl-white figures playing tennis. archery. softball on Rand Field, others hiking or biking out to lessons in campcraft at Thorncrag. and the rugged going in for a chilly dip in Lake Sabattus or over at the pool. All these sports and activities were offered under the direction of the A. A. Board to every woman in college for every woman is a member of A. A. Each member of the A. A. Board is a Coach-Manager of a particular sport and a Chairman for projects. such as Mid Year Cocoas, which contribute to a successful year of the Vfomens Athletic Association. Through its executive committee, consisting of the president, vice-president, secre- tary and treasurer. and the cabinet, composed of the heads of the various commissions, it acts as an integrating force in the religious life of the college, to interest students in vital social problems and to maintain many of the campus services necessary to a complex college life. In organization it is divided into nine commissions: Freshman, Religion, Social, Social Action, Campus Service, Community Service, Conferences and Publicity, War Services and Reconstruction and Deputations. These commissions are concerned with the organization and execution of the C.
