During the eventful, disturbed months of 1941 and 1942, there has been a lot of smug talk about democracy. Fortunately, through the Student Council and the men's assemblies, which the council sponsors, the men of the college have the opportunity to help make a real and vital democracy work successfully every day of the college year. The 1941-42 Student Council has had as its most significant project the fostering and main- taining of friendly relations with each of the other three Maine colleges. Informal meetings with representatives of the men's student governing organizations of Colby. Bowdoin and the University of Maine have been initiated, chapel speakers have been exchanged and an interchange of dance tickets took place, too. Ranking next in importance to this project has been the attempt to bring about a closer, more mutual alumni-student relationship. not only through the usual channel, the annual Back-to Bates night rally, but also through the new practice of sending council representatives to alumni club meetings. Furthermore, the council has cooperated with the Student and the Christian Association in sending copies of the college weekly to former graduates now in the armed forces. And the council has worked with the Varsity Club on a plan to tutor Freshman athletes. Routine activities of the Student Council are supervision of Freshman rules, men's assem- blies, smoke walks, elections, Red Cross Drives, intramural activities, rallies, student trains, Sunday tennis, mayoralty campaigns, rental of caps and gowns to Seniors, and chapel programs on alternate Saturday mornings. Innovations in handling some of these activities have been introduced by the 1941-12 Student Council. Frosh rules were revisedg rallies planned by a new booster', committeeg and more than two hundred and fifty dollars was used to purchase new caps and gowns. The major effort of the Board, which consists of representatives from the three upper classes, has been in the direction of increasing student participation in, and knowledge of, Student Government functions and activities in order to make the organization more truly democratic. Perhaps the biggest step in this democratizing process has been the change in the constitu- tion which provides for popular election of the nominating committee which nominates officers and Board members and recommends proctors. Formerly this committee was chosen by the Student Government Board. Meetings of the whole association for the explanation of the set-up and inner workings of the organization, and appointment of non-board people to com- mittees have also increased participation and interest in Student Government affairs. Although the disciplinary function, which is based on a unique honor system, is usually thought of when Student Govermnent is mentioned, there are many other lines in which the organization is active. Chief among the social events sponsored by the group this year have been teas. freshman stunt night. lVIother's Weekend. coffees, open house at the Women's Union, a spring tea dance, and the annual banquet, at which Elissa Landi, of stage and screen fame, was the guest speaker. All-campus contributions have been the address book, midyear cocoas, and Saturday morning chapel speakers. An innovation this year was the candlelight ceremony at which the freshmen pledged them- selves to the honor system by signing the constitution. Also new was the formation of a joint committee with Student Council for the purpose of bringing about greater cooperation be- tween the two organizations. All these things added together show that 1941-42 has indeed been a profitable year in furthering representative self-government among Bates women. Parmenter SUMMARY T Amherst T New Hampshire 13 Tufts 0 Northeastern 13 Blaine 19 Bowdoin 'I Colby VARSITY PUUTBALL wi THE SEASON Under a new mentor, Raymond Ducky,' Pond, the Bates team had one of its most successful seasons in recent years. Despite early reversals, the team improved enough with each game so that. when State Series time rolled around. the Garnet gridmen were a definite threat for the title. As had been expected. the season opened with a loss to a powerful outfit from Amherst College, 31-T. The game was played before Coach Pond could round a group of capable reserves into shape. The Bobcats held the Lord Jeffs almost even, trailing 6-0 as the period came to a close. ln the second half Amherst piled up 25 points against the weary Garnet gridmen. who were able to squeeze out only T points for themselves. The second contest was an exciting and perhaps lucky victory as Bates defeated the University of New Hampshire by a score of T-6. The game was played in Portland as a part of that city's USO campaign. With extreme suddenness the Bobcats scored midway in the second period. Soph Arnold Card intercepted an NHU pass on the Bates 48. On the next play Del Johnson slanted off tackle for 52 yards and a score. John Sigsbee, sidelined hy a bad ankle, came into the game to kick the extra point and put Bates ahead T-0. In the third quarter the Wildcats, assuming the offensive, scored on a powerful thrust of T9 yards. Subsequent play netted no further points for either side. Bates lost its third game to Tufts. 15-13. The ,lumbos scored twice at the outset, first on a safety and then after a sustained drive. After a scoreless second canto. Bates opened the third period by marching 40 yards for a score by Card and the point by Sigsbee. In the same frame the Bobcats scored on a tricky douhle lateral. Card's pass to Walker was flipped to Flanagan. who went over. The conversion was missed. With Bates now ahead 13-8 the Jumbo juggernaut rolled 89 yards in the last period for a touchdown and the extra point which gave them the victory. The Bates team suffered a complete relapse in the next game, going down before underdog Northeastern by a score of 13-0. Two periods of desultory football ended with a score of 0-0. Northeastern scored once in the third. with the final tally coming in the last quarter. Dias of NU carried lllost of the offensive power for the visiting club. A rejuvenated Bates team met the Black Bears from the University of Maine 011 G2lrC6l0Il Field in the State Series opener and sent them back to Orono smarting from a 13-0 clawing. Midway in the first period the Garnet scored on a drive of 80 yards. Joe LaRochelle lugged the leather over from the 12. Sigsbee missed the conversion. The Bears roared back into the fray for a touchdown in the next five minutes which tied the score at 6-all. The Pond V HSITY FUUTB LL ww THE SEASON clan came right back. lnoving 55 yards down the field, with Card and Walker picking up the bulk of the yardage. Walker plunged across the end stripe. Sigsbee's point after was good this time, and the Bobcats were on the long end of a 13-6 count. The second half was scoreless. This game. which marked Coach Pond's entry into the Maine State Series. was indeed an excellent introduction. Playing on a rain-soaked field at Bowdoin. the Bates gridmen swamped the Polar Bears with a convincing 19-6 victory. Early in the first period. the Bobcats scored on a pass from Del Johnson to Joe LaRochelle. The Garnet repeated as Arnold Card returned a punt from the Bates 45 to the one foot line. from which point Walker went over. The con- version was lnissed. making the score 13-0. The second and third quarters were scoreless. The first play of the final period. however. was a 55-yard gallop by Del Johnson to the Bowdoin 19. Six plays later Walker bolted over for the third Garnet score. The point was good, and the Bates team was ahead 19-0. At this point Coach Pond began to send in reserves against whom the Polar Bears were able to score their only touchdown. By virtue of this win the Bates team was now on top in the Series, as Colby and Maine tied in their game. Needing only a tie with the Mules of Colby to attach the State Series title, the Bobcats traveled to Waterville on Armistice Day to drop a 14-T contest. In the second quarter Del Johnson broke off tackle on a 59-yard sweep for a touchdown. Sigsbee's conversion was good, and the Garnet led T-0. In the fourth quarter the Mules took over and scored a few plays later, making the point to knot the count at T-all. About two minutes later, Loring of Colby plucked a Walker pass out of the air and raced 50 yards to score for Colby again. The point was scored, and Colby led 14-7. Bates did not win the mythical crown. but she did have the best team on the field for eleven solid periods of State Series play. Ducky Pond and Jimmy DeAngelis are to be commended for the superior job they did this year in coaching the Bates gridmen. lt was largely through their efforts that there was instilled in the team and the student body a fighting spirit and a desire to win that has not been present for the past few seasons. Among the Seniors who have played their last game under the Garnet colors are Gene Ayers, Tom Flanagan, Red Francis, Johnny James, George Parmenter, Jim Scott, and Johnny Sigsbee. On most of the more reliable all-Maine teams Bates placed four men: George Parmenter. guardg Norm Johnson and Jack Shea. tacklesg and Del Johnson, back. VARSITY FUUTB LL 1:1191 THE SEASON The basketball team for the season 1941-42 was decidedly unsuccessful from the point of view of victories. The team won from Bowdoin twice and from AIC once, while losing to Clark, Northeastern, St. Anse1m's, Colby twice, Maine twice, New Hampshire, M.I.T., and Tufts. In the season's opener, the Bobcat aggregation lost to Clark on the usoutherni' trip by a score of 66-40. Although the Bates squad held a slim lead at the end of the first period, the Clark live scored in the remaining three to pile up the victory margin. The second game was also on the road trip against Northeastern at Boston. The Garnet remained close to the Huskies only to be topped in the last period 52-34. A turn in the tide was featured in the third game as the Bates team nosed out AIC in a close and fast contest. The final score indicates the closeness of the playing-Bates, 38- AIC, 37. On January 8 the Hawks of St. Anselms won a definite victory over the Bobcats by a score of 4-1-27. Again the Bates men collapsed in the late stages to be overcome by a team of which the Garnet appeared to be a near equal in the early stages. The late stage let-up, which seemed to characterize this year's squad, betrayed the Gamet into its fourth set-back. The Mules of Colby were the victors in this contest by a decisive score of 52-37. Orono was the scene of the next Bates defeat where the Black Bears soundly shellacked the Bobcats to the tune of 45-27. The Garnet was unable to find the hoop, and Maine led throughout the game. Bowdoin's first basketball team in several year was selected to end the Bobcat losing streak. The game was a rough and tumble fracas throughout, although ending in a 46-38 victory for Bates. At a game in Portland the Bowdoin squad was again nipped by Bates, 38-36. The two teams were tied with 34 each with but a couple of minutes to play. Boyan thereupon shot a spectacular basket which, with two fouls, spelled victory for the Bobcats. Against the Jumbos of Tufts the Garnet revealed its best basketball of the season, only to be humbled in a close game. 31-27. Rebounding from a setback at the hands of Maine, the University of New Hampshire quintet rolled into Lewiston and rolled over the Bobcats, 56-33. The visitors led througliplt without being threatened once. Another last-minute two point defeat was the fate the Bobcats met in the game against MIT at Cambridge. The engineers came through with a goal in the last minute to trip the Bobcats in another of those heartbreaking losses, 37-35. Colby again took the measure of the Garnet in the next encounter. The game was played at Waterville and ended with the Mules on top, S2-28. The last game ended the season as it had begun-in defeat for Bates. In an extremely rough contest, the Black Bears of Maine climbed over the Bobcats, 50-45. The final story reads three wins and ten defeats, not too impressive. The Bates team steadily improved, however, under the tutelage of Jimmy DeAngelis, new Garnet coach, and dropped several close encounters. Trafton A. Wight LL THE SEASON Although he entered the season with only a small nucleus of the 19-11 team remaining, Coach Pond has developed a nine which may threaten to repeat last year's championship. Owing to a shortened season. the schedule has been reduced, and Bates will play only six games, two with each of the other Maine colleges. It was predicted at the outset of the season that this year's club would be smooth in the field but lacking in power at the plate. The opposite has been the case. In the three games played so far, our two defeats can be attributed directly to fielding lapses. Dave Shiff, pitching against Bowdoin in the season's opener. was a victim of his own errors and was defeated 5-l. Coach Pond sent Shiff to the mound again in the second game. played against Blaine. Here, aided by timely hitting in the pinches and no serious mistakes afield, Bates won T-2. The third game. played against Colby. was a repetition of the Bowdoin fracas. Mike Matragrano outpitched Zecker of Colby. limiting the Mules to five hitsg but seven errors coupled with the fact that twelve men were left stranded on the base paths. spelled defeat. Bates was shut out by a score of 3-0. Coach Pond has built this team around his five remaining veterans. The pitching burden is carried by Shifl' and Matragrano. with Al Wight available for relief. When not pitching Wight patrols the right field section very creditably. He is one of the heavy stickers on the club. Kyp Josselyn. whose outstanding play at first base has been a defensive highlight for the past two seasons. is again holding down the initial sack. Rounding out the roster of veterans is Del Johnson. in left field. Del is probably one of the best ball hawks in the state, and his heavy bat gives the Bates club most of its power at the plate. There are several novices on the team who have already established their reputations as base players. Tom Flanagan and .loe LaRochelle are holding down second and short respec- tively and form one of the better keystone combinations in Maine. Occupying the hot corner is Mickey Walker. a Junior. who is playing his first baseball at Bates. Sophomore Cubby Cenetti has done all the catching so far. and his pep and chatter behind the plate have marked him as a smart. aggressive receiver. Although weak offensively. Arnold Card has showed well in the outfield. No team can be considered a really good ball club unless it has strong reserves: Bates seems adequate in this respect. lnheld substitutions include Aucoin. Mm-Cullough. Keller and McKinney. Catching is well fortified with Coldenberg and McMurray ready to fill in at any time. Replacements in the outfield are lacking. but any of the pitchers could do a good job if called upon. If Bates can improve its fielding so that it is on par with its hitting. Coach Pond may yet come through with a championship team. VARSITY B SEB LL flm First Row, left to right: J. McCullough. D. Losses outweighed wins in the final results: yet races were mostly rather close. Team men were: Dave Nickerson. John Grimes. Bert Smith, Gordon Corbett, Dave Sawyer, John Marsh, Don Roberts, John Dyer. Probably the most steady runners were Grimes, Smith and Corbett, all doing a fine job throughout the season. Bates was outclassed in reserves by most of the squads it met. M.l.T. and Northeastern had very strong teams and won without too much difficulty. Among the Maine colleges, how- ever, there was greater balance in strength. Bowdoin overthrew the Bates men in a close race at Brunswick, where Hillman showed his heels to a considerable part of the field. The State Meet, held at the Augusta Country Club, was another tight run, with Bowdoin, Maine and Bates all making strong bids for first place. The Colby harriers were quite easily defeated by the Bates runners despite a game battle on the part of the losers. The annual Interclass Meet was won by a powerful junior contingent this year. Grimes, Corbett, Sawyer and Marsh took the first four places in that order. Howie Spence of the freshmen finishing fifth. The final contest of the season. the N.E.I.C.A.A.'s, found the Bates squad handicapped mostly by lack of experience in running with a big field. Bates placed thirteenth in a large group of New England teams paced by Rhode Island State. The track season was very successful this year, although the meets were marked by the absence of such men as McLautl1lin, Lyford and Boucher. Despite lack of material, the small Bates squad was well balanced and boasted many stellar performers. Even the contests lost were very close in point ratio. Outstanding in the weight events were Sigsbee, Larrabee, Shea and Hemmenwayg in running. Nickerson, Thompson, Mabee, Crimes, Smith and Dyer, in hurdles, Norm Tuftsg high-jump. Park and Tuftsg broad-jump. Deering and Creang and pole-vault, Crean. The triangular meet with Northeastern and Bowdoin ended with Bates on the short end and Northeastern the winner. In the BA..-X. contest the relay team, composed of Thompson, Smith, Mabee and Nickerson, took first place from Brown and New Hampshire in one of the best races of the night. The Bates squad demonstrated superiority in all events against Colby. The last two meets, with Bowdoin and the University of Maine, were very close in points and even closer in relative ability of the teams. In the Bowdoin contest Dave Nickerson established a cage record of 1:1-1 5fl0 in the 600. Highlight of the Maine competition was Johnny Sigs- bee's 47' TW shotput, setting a state record. Crean distinguished himself by breaking the cage record for the pole-vault on several occasions. The squad will feel the loss next year of its three valuable seniors, Sigsbee, Nickerson and Mabee. They have done excellent work in their four years of competition, performing favorably against teams of creditable athletes. EHUSS EUU TRY fl241 First Row, left to right: G. Corbett, N. Tufts. J.
